Is Audi Genius OR Barking Up The Wrong Tree? Auto Advertising Gets FIERCE
Now with auto sales beginning to pick up, it appears that automotive manufacturer's marketing departments are back to do doing what they do best; pick fights. Just kidding, they get creative!

Lately everyone has been raving about MINI and Porsche. And, with good reason. They're relentless!

But it does not end there. So is Audi!

As you can see below, Audi unleashed a series of advertisements targeting BMW products. In the past six months it seems that there has been a consistent back and forth between both companies. You have to love it if you're a gearhead.

Recently, our very own 001 was cruising the 'net and discovered yet another BMW-targeted Audi advertisement. **Note: take a look at the cover image.

This time they were attacking BMW's recent "Joy" campaign.

Genius?

Additionally, if you had not seen the television spot featuring Audi picking on BMW's losses in recent Car and Driver picks, watch on below...

Pathetic or just competitive?

Pathetic or creative?

Can the same be said for MINI chasing Porsche?

Anyway you slice it, both campaigns have people excited about autos, something that cannot be said for 2009, which was an abysmal year for the industry.

Pathetic competition. Not creative at all.
What really got the average people talking about cars again are those Kia Soul Hamster commercials. The girls get interested, and the guys who could care less about cars have to research for their own dignity.

"Insecure and Ignorant" describes any person who criticizes another based on the car they drive, which is exactly what you're doing here. Back to the topic of this thread...marketing skirmishes are nothing new. Audi has been on a roll lately and they are rightfully using that to their advantage. Whether you like the brand or not does not diminish that fact.

I know I'm going to get ripped for this but I'm going to state it anyway. This type of advertising by Audi and BMW (for the Mini) represents the nature of the 2 car companies, young, high performing and brash and is always trying to top one another. But it also illustrates the other truth and that is, they're chasing someone that in their eyes is above/ahead of them and telling the world that we have arrived. I may be wrong but I don't see Porsche or MB getting into the fray because in their eyes (and in their competitors' eyes as well), Porsche and MB are above it. Now if you want to call that arrogant on the part of Porsche and MB, you are welcome to do so.

I'm going to assume you meant that that's a good thing, since gay guys do most things better than their heterosexual counterparts.

The commercial is a bit juvenile in fact from what ive seen BMW is simply responding to this nonsense which in my opinion isnt very appealing either as for the most part they have completely ignored Audi in general. It just sorta reminds me of someone going after another person to validate themselves by them recognizing them and thats just isnt very becoming and Audi seems desperate for validation with all these ads not something an owner wants to be seen as. As far as the Porsche and Mini thing, Mini poking fun at Porsche fits the brand they are a fun loving youthful brand so the advertising fits. As far as Porsche and Mercedes being above anything I fail to see that as Porsche as questioned Nissan's GTR runs which is worse than actually just building a car that can beat it yet ironically the brand start life being based on VWs most popular economy car, and Mercedes Benz has participated in this type of advertising as well...but lol if as an owner of a brand you need to validate yourself by saying such pretentious falsehoods go right ahead do what helps your ego

There isn't anything unusal with this commerical. It's simply marketing. Wendy's, Burger King and McDonalds all bang each other on who makes the best hamburger. What about Coke and Pepsi; those two giants have been swinging at each other not just on their how their soda taste, but who's commericals are actually better. If you recall several years ago, Pepsi actually was asking consumers who had the better commericals. Moreover, what about Mean Joe Greene's commercial in 79 SuperBowl and then a JAB at Pepsi with Troy Polamalu remake of Joe Green commerical in 2008 Super Bowl XIII. Look for the two guys from Pepsi:

I own a Bimmer and an Audi, both are great cars in their own. A commerical isn't going to change what car I buy.

Three words:

"Meet the Beckers"

Sums up why are think of the Audi brand as a childish, insecure, arrogant, self-centered, pathetic, attention grabbing one, and for me that runs all the way through the brand, through the owners and even is evident in their motorsport program.

It only saddens me that BMW ever stoop to this level in response to Audi.

And as far as the mini thing goes, a straight challenge is different to teenage girl style back-stabbing and snide comments.

The difference for me is that when some brands do it, there is still respect... but Audi don't play it this way, they are just scum in my mind.

Just my two cents of course.

It's not all bad, I did like the commercial with Jason Statham, showing the evolution of the Getaway car. That at least was entertaining.

Actually a light hearted advert that boasts their recent accomplishments. Now I can't wait for BMW's response, they won't take this laying down.

It's just advertising, folks. Y'know, emphasize your strengths (we beat BMW in 3 competitions) and down-play or don't mention your weaknesses (BMW, and other brands, have spanked us in a number of competitions). That's all it is.

Personally, I don't take well to commercials that come across as being smug or arrogant, regardless who they come from. And this comes from a guy with two BMWs in his garage (I love 'em both), and who would likely get an Audi A5, if he had to get a new car today.

Ugh. Stick with the new lux vs. old lux angle. Case in point, the R8 Godfather commercial had a far more compelling statement.

I just cant wait until Audi or Bmw start putting guns on their vehicles.
