REALISTICALLY SPEAKING: Where Does Saab's NEW 9-5 Fall On YOUR Short List?

REALISTICALLY SPEAKING: Where Does Saab's NEW 9-5 Fall On YOUR Short List?
Alright, let's get down to brass tacks. Is the "New" Saab worth getting cranked up about?

Sure, they have shied away from General Motors' debauchery and have begun a relatively fresh start, but will that be enough to leer away customers from those big names? Namely: Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

I'll tell you, the new 9-5 is a pretty sweet machine. When I had the chance to see it in the flesh there is no question it is a handsome vehicle. My only beef is that it has a lot of GM switchgear on the interior. Sure, it is packaged nicer but the button work and some interior panels remain...familiar.

Based on the same architecture that makes up the Opel Insignia, Chevrolet Malibu, 2010 Buick LaCrosse and upcoming Cadillac XTS, I am sure it will drive well.

Therein lies the problem, is well good enough anymore?

What say you, Spies? Is Saab going to take down the big guns OR is the company a bit too ambitious?

The redesigned 2010 Saab 9-5 Aero sedan is big, filled with technology, and designed and engineered to compete with the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-class sedans.

“The new Saab demonstrates that we are alive and kicking,” said Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars
NV, the Dutch sports car maker that purchased Saab from General Motors Co. in February.

Basics: The new 9-5 shares GM's global mid-sized architecture with such vehicles as the Opel Insignia, Chevrolet Malibu, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS, due in 2011...

While I love the idea of the new 9-5 (had the old 9-5) I pause wondering how much GM is in the car. Its GM past keep me from the car.

I was at a junk yard in Fort Lauderdale the other day, walking through the aisles and I came upon a first generation SAAB 900 Turbo, just sitting there. The engine was still in it, but the turbo had been removed. The body was in fairish condition and I honestly started to drool. That ugly little car was gorgeous. Gorgeous in a way that I just can't explain. Many of us here understand what I'm saying. SAAB lost that magic eons ago. However, I think I shall reserve judgement until I see this effort in the flesh. I think it's going to be one of those kinds of cars. That said, it wouldn't get far on my list if it were from the engine numbers alone.

I would weight for the next generation 9-5 before seriously considering it - too much GM baggage. I want a car entirely developed, tested and designed by Spiker, not a GM leftover parts bin afterthought.

I dunno, have you ever seen in the engine bay of a spyker car? It's pretty ghetto. I was excited the first time I saw a Spyker, unfortunately they had all the hoods open trying to show off everything... very disappointing.

I always wondered why anyone would buy a saab. if you want sporty, get bmw. if you want lux, get MB. if you are in between get audi. this car hasn't changed that...

If there were 2 vehicles left in the world... This 9-5 and a stick shift 2000 Kia Sportage.... I'd take the Sportage.
