Jalopnik FAIL: Someone Isn't Adding Up, Literally

Jalopnik FAIL: Someone Isn't Adding Up, Literally
Sometimes you just have to call them as you see them.

While we at AutoSpies appreciate Jalopnik's unique sense of humor, fun-loving spirit and quirkiness about covering the automotive industry, it made a pretty outlandish claim yesterday about BMW's Frozen Gray M3.

And it is downright wrong.

Read on below...

"Thirty chumps will belly up to the Bavarian bar for one of thirty 2011 BMW M3 Frozen Gray Coupes. It's $77,600 for flat gray paint, red seats, and the competition package. That's approximately $9000 for exclusive paint..."

Usually, I would applaud the blog for "keeping it real."  But, uh, they're not.

This is why. When you add up the options of the Frozen Gray M3 onto a "regular" M3, the difference is $4,895.

Mind you this does not include the price of one-day enrollment at the M School, which is priced at $1,295

Taking that into consideration, the difference becomes $3,600.

AND when you consider that BMW individual paints are a premium -- rumors have put them costing around $2,000 - $5,000 -- AND you're getting a BMW individual interior, it is pretty fairly priced.

Check out our math below...

Base price....................................................$58,400
Alpine White.................................................$0
Black Novillo Leather.....................................$0
Carbon Leather trim......................................$0
Competition Package.....................................$2,500

PDC (rear only).............................................$380
Destination...................................................$875
Gas Guzzler...................................................$1,300
________________________________________________
"Regular" M3 Coupe.......................................$74,005
Frozen Gray M3 Coupe...................................$78,900**

Difference....................................................$4,895

One-day enrollment @ M Driving School..........$1,295

I think Dave Chapelle could sum this up quite appropriately with "When keeping it real goes wrong."

Whether or not BMW could have done something better to commemorate 25 years of the M3 is one thing, but you cannot stretch numbers. All this from the firm who says Jeep exaggerated in its latest advertisement, yikes.

Is 00R missing something?

I knew this was the competition package for this car as i said in a previous post.....the only thing I dont like about it which is about 6 years old now is the 2-tone leather I think that is so old and played out. now if they would have taken the less is more approach they could of stitched in a M badge on the front headresets and then kept the seats all black and stitched the seats with the M color stictching like how they did the steering wheel. thats the ONLY thing I hate about this package.

A typo is different from a factual pricing discrepancy.

BTW, you have balls posting on here with your BS UAW propaganda.

Once again, BMWspies agents defending their favorite brand...would an agent ever do the same for any other?

Right..., now im going to have to disagree with that because we say WAY!! more Audi ads err articles from 009/germannut, and the rest of the Audi crew at autospies. Not to mention the laughable at best article this agent did about the S4 where he saids the S4 is the better car versus 335i yet saids it loses in all objective areas right....., As far as this M3 coupe first thing as a BMW fan they could have really done more to commemorate 25 years of an iconic model especially since this could very well be the cars first and last V8 model they could have gone alot further than recycling a dull gray paint from the M5 and maybe given it a historic colour like estoril blue or something. As far as pricing I'll complain about pricing in a BMW when Porsche stops charging thousands of dollars for power seats and full leather seats in an almost $80,000 sports car..., or thousands for basic metallic paint jobs

good catch oor, but one question: what does the M school have to offer other than just drive a BMW at the track?

From BMW's Performance Driving School web site:

"One-Day M School

Get ready to focus on the same skill sets that professional drivers work on every day. You'll learn how to optimize the M car's attitude to the conditions and road at hand. You'll become a smoother driver. And your reaction times will decrease. It's the result of your skills becoming more in tune with the attributes of the car you'll be driving. After all, power is nothing if you can't handle it.

[insert customer's experience here]

We'll hone in on finesse, quick reflexes and eye coordination through a variety of exercises on our slalom course, autocross and wet skid pad. With more horsepower and sharper chassis dynamics at your controls, you need to be at the top of your game. We'll make sure you get there.

Cost: $1,295"

@KZ258

Although I know that's not exactly the answer to your question, it's the best I could do.

$1300? BMW only? I would rather spend another $400 and drive five different supercars in one day (www.WorldClassDriving.com). That sounds a hundred times more interesting.

Actually, it is a good deal because custom paint from BMW is $5000. I know because I work for BMW and one of my customers is considering brilliant white metallic for a vehicle. So, it is a savings of $1400 of what the MSRP would normally be at.

Decent car, but way overpriced. There are much better looking and performing cars out there for this type of money.

Well I'm going to say that actually Autospies is wrong on this one, because while the MSRP difference is about $3600 - considering you can get at least $3000 off sticker on a regular M3, but nothing on this one - you're really paying at least $6600 for Frozen Gray.
