First Strike: New UAW Leader Calls For Marches Against Toyota And Its Dealerships.
United Auto Workers President Bob King came out swinging on his first day in office, taking aim at Toyota Motor Corp.

King criticized Toyota for closing a Fremont, Calif., plant the Japanese automaker had once operated jointly with General Motors, saying it was shuttered only because it was represented by the UAW, and he called for protest marches against Toyota and its dealerships.

King made the attack during a speech after he was sworn in as the union's 10th president. He argued that a renewed UAW attempt to unionize U.S. workers of foreign automakers is a key to winning back concessions made to Detroit's automakers to help them survive.

The GM workers from Nummi already have jobs in other GM plants this fight is for the workers that Toyota left behind and destroyed there way of living. Why did they not offer them a job in the new plant? This is why unions exist my friends.

This happens everyday outside of the UAW world and is considered normal practice. They call it a reduction in workforce. If a company reopens a facility it is under no obligation to rehire ANY of the original employees.

Many times if you do, then the former employees expect compensation similar to what they had, and reinstatement of old benefits. This may not be feasible.

You might want to look at it in another way. At least part of the facility is reopening for the community. Toyota could have simply leveled it and built another plant in deep south. Times are tough and companies have to survive.

You're a blow hole UAW-LAX. No wonder nobody cares about jobs for you folks. After all the strikes the Big 3 has pulled, demands and CRAPPY quality cars you tell us "that is why unions exist". Nobody OWES you a job; you earn it. Oooooooops I forgot, according to UAW-LAX "THERE HASN'T BEEN A STRIKE IN 25 YEARS BY THE UNION". You obviously know little baout your fellow commrades. My brother plant last had a strike 8 years ago you fool. You shouldn't post on this site because you just make crap up!!

Has your brother read your lies? Or are you lying about your Brother?

If you truly had a brother in the UAW you would understand better. My real brother works for EDS his location closesd and was offerd to relocate from Norfolk VA to Florida. EDS is not unionized but they had the decency to offer a 10 Year tenure employee the oppertunity to continue to serve them. When did people stop thinking about workers rights and the time they have invested in a company?

Demanding high paying guarenteed jobs for life doesn't endear their cause to anyone.

And why in god's name would a foreign automaker sign up for union labor?

There was once a time when labor unions made sense. But now that we have a "standardized" 8-hour day and child labor has been abolished in all First World countries, unions have outlived their purpose. This has been a fact for decades.

So what do labor unions do for us now? They guarantee high-paying jobs, and benefits, and pay for *not* working (strike pay) to folks who, for the most part, could not do nearly as well in the free market without The Thugs "representing" them.

Furthermore, unions add absolutely zero value to the end product, or to the consumer who buys it. Is it any wonder that no business wants, nor needs a union? No entrepreneur in his right mind starts a business thinking, "I need to unionize my business to help increase product quality, employee productivity, and to deliver superior value to my customers." Damn, I can't even type that phrase with a straight face :-)

Steve the same rules you stated where put in place by the UAW decades before the feds made them the rule of thumb today. Saying lets do away with the UAW becuase things are better now would have the sam effect as saying lets do away with the Bill of rights and hope those same rights stay in place becuase things are better today.

May be that is the reason cause most of the companies are moving out of USA...it is Sad. Once upon a time when Amercan was the best. now if I need almos anything good, electronics, cars, etc, it should be Japanese or European...Dam it shouldn't that way. I buy american just to support america but honestly most of the times the products are a hedache. I love my STS, but I spend a lot of time in the worshop with it while my Accord or my mercedes are always working fine.

uaw_lax, you can argue about workers' rights and invested time all you want but...

-What about the rights of workers who might not want to join a union without fear of getting bullied?
-What about the rights of workers to keep secret ballots? Why was that being attacked with the not-so-subtle, Orwellian name of "Employee Free Choice Act"?
-You guys always act like the victims, but at the end of the day, no matter how you argue your position, when a vehicle comes out with lower quality and a higher price, the UAW will end up digging its own grave. If all manufacturers unionized, it will come down to the product and price and some union workers will end up getting screwed. If the union forces the government to enact protectionist policies, that will only be met with retaliation that, again, screws union members AND the consumers to boot.

Unions are good at screwing. Period. And I am so sick of reading about the UAW and how they made "sacrifices" to save GM and Chrysler. It's one thing to organize over, say, a common occurence of severed limbs or child labor, but as it stands today, the UAW are just as self interested as the businesses they attack. Argue all you want, but you can't force me to buy a UAW product. Keeping that in mind, good day to you, sir.

I was just about to buy a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500, and after reading what the new UAW president said...I'm buying a 2010 Tundra instead. Picket Toyota dealers...?? Why? I have family members that work for Toyota and they are extremely happy working for that company. So who exactly would benefit from unionizing Toyota? The UAW, that's who. That's nonsense. Sorry Dodge, I'm taking my business across the street. And I'm going to tell the sales manager at the Dodge dealer why he just lost the deal. Hopefully I'm not the only one who does this.
