GM is bigger in China than in United States, reports says
For the month of May, General Motors and its joint ventures reported record sales in China, selling 196,004 vehicles and beating GM’s sales in the US, which had sales of 167,325 units.

GM’s operations in China were boosted by the strong demand for the Buick and Chevrolet brands and the positive demand for its other brands. From January to May 2010, GM’s sales in China reached 1,032,665 units, up 54% from the same period in 2009 — a new record for the period. In the US, GM sold 882,277 vehicles from January to May 2010.

Lots of assholes with sour grapes on this page, aren't there? Well then again, I'm at Autospies, it's chock full of assholes. The fact that GM is bigger in China says one thing to me. EXPORT is clearly something that American manufacturers should take into consideration. Macroeconomic principles say that if a company or country does not trade it will lose out on comparative advantage gains. It's simple math, and even simpler common sense. American manufacturers have for decades disregarded foreign markets for some unknown reason. They almost refused to build right hand drive cars (even though about 3/8 of the world's population dries them), they almost refused to build smaller engines (even though they would save billions in production costs), and they almost refused to build proper small cars (even though companies like Toyota created an empire selling them). Until recently of course, when the American situation warranted it. Playing catch up is only good if you have a better product taking to the game. The recent efforts from both Ford and GM are proving that they finally understand these principles and they will be rewarded. The hypocritical game that some of the morons on this website play is irritating at best. You are so pissed off that a black man is president that you would rather everything that is going well for your country be undone just to get an old white fart in the Oval Office. You people are sick, I tell you. Go on, play that game...There are actually people out there that are happy you hate Obama, GM, Chrysler and everything else that is American. They are called Al Qaeda...

It's a common sense, but being a superpower needs more than common sense. The wall street people has figured this out.... they don't want US to MFR anything. They want US to print dollars(while creating debt) and just buy the stuff. This, my friend, is the best way to make money for them(and debt for you)!

First, exports from the US to the developing world are nearly impossible due to the difference in living conditions (and wages). Its easy to talk about exports from the US to other countries, but rarely do the financial numbers work out.

Second, GM does well in China because it has a very good reputation there as compared to here in the US. The Chinese weren't forced to live through the 30 years of the crap cars that were foisted upon us here in the US.

Third, China's auto industry makes worse cars than GM (for now). But that will change and then GM will have to compete against the home team in 5-10 years and its not going to be very easy. The Chinese have proven time and again that they can improve at a rate about 3x of the US and Europe. At this rate, they should catch up to our level of qualtiy and design around 2016.

And thus, huu76 had it right when he said that GM better enjoy it while it lasts, because it ain't gonna last long.
