GM U.S. plants will forego traditional summer shutdown

General Motors announced that it is planning to increase production by 56,000 vehicles which means that it will keep most its U.S. plants open through its traditional summer shutdown period.

Nine of its 11 U.S. assembly plants will skip the two-week summer shutdowns and continue to operate through the June 28 to July 9 period to help meet strong demand. Due to this, most of GM’s U.S. stamping and powertrain plants will also work to support assembly operations. For those who don’t know, GM’s sales in the United States rosed 15 percent in the first five months of this year and Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands were up more than 30 percent this year.

This is a good thing. I went to a Chevrolet dealership in FL recently and they told me they only had 4 Equinoxes on the lot. All were front drive, 4 cylinder models, and they had just got them the day before and it was all they would be getting for the near future. Anything other than those 4 (like a V6 AWD) would attracted a wait of 8 weeks for delivery. Amazing. Who woulda thought...
