Rumor: New Mazda MX-5 might receive hybrid rotary engine
There are rumors of a rotary, hybrid next-gen MX-5. Our source is Best Car, the Japanese enthusiast magazine, which let it “leak” that Mazda wants to use a 1.2-liter or 1.3-liter rotary engine into the next MX-5, which is also known as Roadster in its home market.

The twist is that a hybrid drivetrain is linked up with it. While it’s true that the hybrid sports car trend in Japan is taking off, there are details in this report that are questionable. First of all, the MX-5/Roadster has never been a rotary from the factor and Mazda has very recently invested a lot of its time and effort to develop its new SKY-G engines.

hmmm... lose weight with a rotary... only to put it back on with a hybrid system? I dunno, just a regular rotary would be sweet in that tiny car. Who knows... it could get down to.. 2200lbs?

The only worry is that the reliability of this car will go straight to hell. The rotary is very unrealiable and problematic. This car always wins awards for its reliability , I think that would be a dumb move. What they should do is Mazdaspeed it and put the engine in from the Mazdaspeed3. That would be unbelievable.

As a comment to Invisible, I doubt few people buy this car because of it's smoothness, fuel economy or performance. It is a fun, simple, reliable (at least for now), great handling, easy to maintain car, and inexpensive to upgrade chassis performance on. Performance - - - while not fast in a straight line, puts most peer cars to shame on the track (lacks acceleration, but driven properly as a momentum car, is very quick around a track), winding mountain roads and AutoX tacks.
