Worlds first hybrid V8

Lexus has unveiled the LS600h – a performance hybrid version of its new flagship – at the 2006 New York International Automobile Show.

It will be the world’s first vehicle of any class or category to feature a full hybrid V8 powertrain.

The vehicle will build on the performance hybrid strategy to be released with the GS450h in May followed by the RX400h later this year.

The LS600h will combine an all-new five-litre V8 petrol engine with combined massive, high-output electric motors and a newly designed large-capacity battery pack.

It will deliver a peak, combined output of more than 320kW.

“The flagship LS600h, as with the entire Lexus performance hybrid program, is about Lexus stretching its reign as a technology and performance luxury leader,” said John Roca, corporate manager, Lexus Australia.

A new all-wheel-drive system will give superior handling, while a newly developed dual-stage electronic continuously variable-transmission will deliver the hybrid flagship’s considerable power.

With electric motors providing infinite torque from rest, the V8 hybrid system will deliver power seamlessly with impressive acceleration and passing speed.

The LS600h drivetrain is recognised as the automotive industry’s most advanced petrol-electric hybrid system. It is anticipated that it will provide 12-cylinder engine power with V6 fuel economy – estimated at approximately 14 litres/100km.

As a SULEV-rated (Super Low Emissions) vehicle, LS600h is estimated to produce just 20 per cent of the smog-forming emissions of a conventional five-litre V8.

“Obviously we save the best for the flagship. The original LS400 shook up the luxury auto market back in 1990, and the LS600h follows that tradition,” said Mr Roca.

“There is nothing currently available – or to my knowledge even in planning stage – that can offer LS600h’s immense power with its surprising fuel economy and low emissions.”

As released in New York, LS600h will feature a suite of world-first safety systems, such as Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS), which can anticipate and act on possible collisions with pedestrians.

LS600h’s interior is predictably indulgent. Its 5151mm wheelbase will be 122mm longer than that of the LS460 available in Australia from November this year.

A host of Lexus-level luxury appointments include a four-person seating configuration with a fixed rear console and fold-out table, and a right rear-seat 45-degree recliner with ottoman and vibration massage.

A 19-speaker premium Mark Levinson stereo and 19-inch DVD fold-down screen are standard across the new LS line.

Does it really require to have a comparison test now.I think NO,IT's a PROVEN WINNER or BORN WINNER.

the GAME is OVER.

First thing I noticed was the very BMW-likeness of this 3/4's angle shot. As far as the hybrid thing goes....its still no answer for our reliance on petrolium.... I say go E85 and lets start growing our fuel!! But at least Toyota is attempting to help the fuel consuptions by offering these hybrids. The car looks alright as well, just wish Toyota would give Lexus its own true look, still too many Bimmer styling ques.

The rear end actually reminds me of a few 90's Cadillacs. The whole h thing is a gimmick, but there is no denying the technology Toyota puts out there is a good thing. Lets face it, Lexus is trying its best to compete with the German brands and of course will emulate them.

If any of you live or been to very rich neighborhoods you will see 95% of luxo cars be of German descent. Lexus wants that, but currently appeals to those buyers that are not rich, but make enough to buy a Lexus. Lexus has gained ground in the last 5 years due to German ding on reliability, but it appears that German autos have fixed that sive.

I'm glad I can finally ask someone that works for Lexus some questions:

1. How long are the battery packs designed to last?
2. What happens to said battery packs once they are used up? Has Lexus found a way to dispose of them in an environmentally safe way?

P.S. Uneducated is one word, not two.

Is this the production version of the hybrid vehicle because I noticed the headlights are a different configuration and IMHO it looks much better than the regular gasoline version. I like how those three projection headlights are lined up and actually think it makes it look nicer. I guess if you are paying a premium for the hybrid it does need to be a bit different.

Hatorade? Shouldn't that be Hateorade? What is that anyways?
I like how he is now the spokesman for Lexus...."we" asked the EPA. Right, hopefully he can talk better than he can write (nice catch Daytona). Who writes in all caps anyways?

Uneducated? OK SexuaL...just because people don't agree that LEXUS RULES!!!! lol Did I say that people who buy Lexus cannot afford BMW/MB? I am just stating the FACT that affluent buyers stick to the traditional luxo cars, which are European. Hell go to my neck of the woods or any higer income area and open your eyes. I never said Lexus is a bad brand, actually I have friends that say good and bad about their IS and GS cars. Nothing is perfect, but a good solid brand.

By the way sexuaL..working at the dealership is not the same as really working for Toyota. But whatever makes you feel better.

As for the h...IT IS A GIMMICK. Why do you think they are planting it on every car they are making. Easy markup $$$. Again not saying it is bad, just looking at it from a marketing point. Which IS a smart move sense people are caught up in the hybrid hype. Hopefully in the near future hybrids would actually pay off in the end.

I was just kidding about the un thing. But it does look like your last post wasn't in caps...interesting.

But I really would like to know the answers to the other questions. Because if Lexus is such a great company, than what have they figured out for the used up batteries? Or will they figure that out later? How good is that for the environment?

Hey SexuL, I agree that LJ does sound a bit juvenile with his comments. I do want to reference the Car and Driver article that picked the 330i as the winner of the IS 350. Not because of 0-60 times, because I believe the IS is faster. But overall package, especially handling were the reasons for winning. Lexus does have it's strong points, but handling definitely goes to the Germans.

Oh yeah, what's up with the batteries?

In the early 90s, Lexus redefined the the Luxury market underpricing their product to the point of losing money. It's real easy to sell cars that way.

Hybrid Technology has allot of potential os no one should knock it. I am glad that manufacturers are getting more involved. Toyota gambled on hybrids and it appears to be paying off. Electric motors naturally produce much more torque than combustible engines. So I can imagine hybrids being faster than combustible motors even though they are heavier (damn batteries).

Why do the Lexus guys get so excited at blowing past a BMW or BENZ at a light? Why do you care so much?

And you call us the posers and the snobs.

Lexus drivers whole ambition in life is to be better than BMW and MERCEDES. I feel sorry for you guys that you cant sit back and enjoy your car. Youre blind as to why they'll never measure up. Youre also blind to see how big of a difference there is between a German and Japanese car. You guys act like your cars are German....seriously.

Which explains just what kind of company and what drivers of Lexus cars are: POSERS.

You guys feel superior for not choosing the best cars and instead opting for this kind of garbage. Yes you heard me...

The new LS is garbage. Not an original design theme on it. A Toyota Hybrid engine...Come on. Shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as BMW or MERCEDES flagships.

Like anyone who buys an S-class or 7-series will consider this Grandpa mobile. This Avalon, this Lexus Park Avenue.

I just hate how everytime a new Lexus or BMW comes out----this crap starts.

( INSERT FALSE STORIES OF SWITCHING FROM BMW TO LEXUS HERE)

The GS and IS are more pleasing to my eye than the new LS and ES.

I'm sure the car will be fantastic, but I wish it looked different.

Perhaps we should wait till we see it out on the road.

Road Prescence is a big deal.

All of these hybrid things are feel good stuff for greenies, they don't make any economic sense. You have to pay a premium for them up front and they will depriciate more at about 4 to 5 years. I would not, so would most people, want to buy these things used unless they already changed the battery otherwise you will have a big hole in your pocket when the battery dies and it will because batteries only last about 4~5 years. Besides, anything that is way complicate like these systems will require higher cost for maintenance and good luck if one of the CPU decides to quit.

The new LS is a conservative barge. It has odd frontal proportions, it is slab-sided like a brick and the back is is as exciting as a Camry. Is just doesn't exude class or dynamism. You can imagine it being a comfortable companion on the freeway, but the new S-Class will leave it for dead on winding roads.

Oh, I hear it now. "But the new LS isn't meant to be a sports car, its a pampering cruiser"

Indeed. But it shows the depth of engineering that goes into these European flagships. Effortless and infinetly comfortable, yet the chassis doesn't mind being worked when the need arises. You can see it when German tuning companies add a few tweaks to the new S, it turns into an oversteering holligan on the track when provoked, a fine example of its bredth of talent.

Yet magazine reports have commented on how quiet it is to drive, how refined and comfortable.

It is a jack of all trades, yet the LS will find more favor in the US for reasons i don't know.

I can already imagine British journalists bagging the new Lexus, for being too bulky, too bland, too clinical. It WILL be effortlessly refined though.

Yet it sells so well in a country which produces some of the worst cars ever to see the light of day. Ironic or what?

The truth is that:
THere are roughly 6 billion people living in this world.
Say Half billion people can afford expensive or premium cars.

Now what u want to say Japaneese haters, tell me.

Can u sell your all German cars to these Half a billion people.

In the past this was the case, but how all of these trends changed?

Why German cars lost their 100% market share of expensive and premium cars to the others(Japaneese).

In the past everyone was looking for the Expensive or premium car, definately comes out with a German.

But what made them (not all of them) swithin to Japaneese cars.

THE ANSWER IS THAT THERE IS A SENSE IN HUMANS,WHICH IS CALLED AS TASTE.
FLAVOUR, ALSO U CAN SAY.

A MAN CHECKS ALL THE FLAVOURS,THEN ONLY HE SETTLE FOR ONE,WHICH HE LIKES.

AND USUALLY SETTLE WITH IT UNTILL, THE OTHER FLAVOURS WHICH HE DIDN'T PICKED FIRST COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW.

WHEN THEY DO COME UP,HE CHAECKS THEM,AND IF HE FINDS THEM BETTER THAN THE ONE WHICH HE WAS OPTED FOR YEARS,HE DEFINATELY GO WITH THEM.CHOOSE THEM.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE CAR INDUSTRY FOR THE PAST HUNDRED YEARS.THEY HAD NO MORE THAN 2 - 3 FLAVOURS.

STORY 100 YEARS BACK:
1)PEOPLE LOOKING FOR EXPENSIVE AND PREMIUM CARS GO FOR GERMANNS
2)PEOPLE LOOKING FOR AVERAGE CARS GO FOR AMERICANS
3)PEOPLE LOOKING FOR CHEAP CARS GO FOR JAPANEESE.

BUT HOW ALL THESE TRENDS CHANGED:

1)DEFINATELY BY ONE COMPANY,WORKING BETTER OR HARDER THAN THE OTHER (TOYOTA).
2)SURPASSING AMERICANS TOOK THEM 50 YEARS.
3)AND IN ANOTHER 17-18 YEARS THEY DIDN'T SURPASSED GERMANS,BUT CAME ON THE EQUALL STEP/LEVEL.(ASSUMPTIONS, ARE THERE THAT IF IN 17-18 YEARS THEY EQUALLED GERMANS.DEFINATELY THEY R GOING TO SURPASS THEM IN THE ANOTHER 10 YEARS FORM NOW)

UNTILL TWO YEARS AGO,THERE WAS SOME CATCHING UP TO DO,BUT NOW WE CAN SAY THAT JAPANEESE EXPENSIVE OR PREMIUM BRANDS ARE ON THE SAME STAGE/LEVEL AS OF GERMANS.EQUALLED

NOW USE MY FLAVOUR EXAMPLE,AND REPLACE FLAVOUR WITH CARS.

IT'S ALLL ABOUT FLAVOURS NOW.CHOOSE ANYONE.

LOOK HOW I MADE THE WHOLE SYSTEM SO SIMPLE.

Is how Byung rights his college thesis on why Lexus is great.

Notice how you guys always need to use so much info to back up your claim of greatness.

You feel so COMPELLED to prove your company.

BMW, MERCEDES and AUDI drivers dont.

They know they made the right decision.

You on the other hand....must be doubting it.

KEEP HATING.

Interesting how Byung brings up "Brokeback Mountain"

Now somehow this homophobic marine has turned the battle of Lexus vs BMW into an assault on one's sexuality.

Call me gay all you want Byung......I'm secure with me sexuality.

I just dont understand how you call me a child....then make comments like that. Thats just hateful. And mean.

Think before you make comments like that.

But realize just what type of person you come off as.

A Hateful As*hole.
