274 HP 2011 Sonata Turbo To Be Priced Around $26K
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is selling strongly out of the gate--but two new versions on the way later this year will give mid-size sedan shoppers a couple more reasons to reconsider the V-6-powered competition.

Green-car fans can look forward to the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which shows up at year's end with a set of lithium-polymer batteries, a conventional six-speed automatic transmission and a potential 40-mpg highway fuel economy rating, according to John Krafcik, CEO for the American unit of the Korean automaker.

Enthusiasts will skip ahead to the Sonata 2.0T turbo, which Krafcik says will complete the "perfect trifecta." Under the hood: a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 274 horsepower. He estimates the Turbo version will only lose 1 mpg of fuel economy from the standard four-cylinder car, for a possible 34-mpg EPA highway rating.

Now watch toyota try to match this with the Boring Camry. I know toyota betta do something fast other than boring reliabilty because Hyundai is makking a tough stand with their new image and so far they have done a great job. I would love to see this when it comes out and with the track edition genisis coupe I would expect the asthetics on this to be nothing short of spectacular

OK and Inline6....I know and everybody and their grandmother knows that the designs hyundai has are borrrowed. But where I am at I see plenty of Genesis coupes/sedans and I see plenty of the new Sonatas. So even with their copy cat designs they are selling a car thats a few thousand cheaper than what u would pay for a toyota. Compare the pricing of a fully loaded camry and a fully loaded Sonata I bet the sonata will win in value. why do you think the subaru/toyota celica or FT86 is coming out ,.....I wonder lemme see is it because of the Genesis coupe or the Track edition coupe...... things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I owned a toyota solara when it first came out it was a reliable car and had a borrowed shape of the Lexus SC300. the only reason i didnt stick with them is because like everyone else says their aesthetics are boring I dont care how you put it. they need to get off the reliability track and give the people something exciting to drive. Hyundai is doing what they need to do to capture their audience and from the number of Brand new Hyundais i am seeing on the road I see they have captured a large AUdience. now with this turbocharged model they have here I think it will seel well who would want V6 power out of a turbocharged 4 banger where you only lose 1mpg as compared to the regular 4 banger. KUDOS TO HYUNDAI AND YOU HATERS DO SOME HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU CRITISIZE

well PatrickBateman.....im not going to go into whats a chick car and whats a boys car if your nosey ass must know i bought the car brand new when I was 20 When I got outta college as a gift for myself for graduating. and being that I am 6'1 and a half 230lbs (at that time) if you mistaking me for a girl in that car you must have alot of Park and Ride experience and maybe been to the "Blue Oyster" once or twice....lolol....so maybe it was a chick car but for me it was my first brand new financed car so take it how you want to.

Exactly. Why would they? All Hyundai has to do is continue gobbling market share just like Toyota did back in the early '80s and '90s, when they were a hungry, growing and innovative car company.

There is a reason why the Camry is one of the best selling cars in the world..... boring/conservatively-designed or not, people want them.

What do you suggest toyota do? Radically change the car and make it edgy to satisfy "car-enthusiasts" who probably wouldn't buy the car anyway?

Consumers arent under mandate to buy Toyota's bland boring designs. They choose to. If the masses wanted sporty or edgy, then the mazda 6, new hyundai sonata, ford fusion etc. would be the #1 selling cars, not the Camry.

9/10 times, the market is never wrong.

I hope you guys don't run businesses of your own.

I know 3 people that have switched from Toyota to Hyundai in just the past couple months (Sonata and Tuscons)... I definitely think they will be hurt by the Sonatas. On paper, you're looking at a car with more horsepower, substantially better mileage, better looks inside and out, and a better warranty. Very compelling argument.

Hardly surprising the comments that refuse to acknowledge Hyundai's market share growth. Go read comments from your beloved Toyota executives in Japan about their fears about Hyundai's rise and then come back here and post tripe about how Hyundai is not a serious competitive threat.

Hyundai is right where Toyota was in the late '80s, when they were experiencing sustained growth in market share and were unstoppable.

Well no there are enough of BMW, Mercedes and Audi's I see maseratis also if thats what you need to hear. But why does it have to be cheap if your buying a brand new $36k-$40k car thats alot of money but im sure where your at Inline6 thats the norm where people got $40k in their pocket to drop on a car or some jewelry or something. but now lets get to the everyday worker working hard for their money owning a house car and paying bills thats what hyudai is going for but you can keep sleeping on hyundai if you want to at the rate their goin they will leave them japanese companies in the dust.

also it doesnt matter where your from because I own a 2006 BMW 550i I dont have a problem living in a area where i am at I dont need to be surrounded by exotics everyday which i assume thats your lifestyle Inline6.... but to each its own but like i said keep sleeping on hyundai you will see sooner than later

Aside from everyone bantering about sales, Toyota copying, etc. Has anyone noted that 274hp from a turbo 4 in a family sedan is a really eye catching number. At least for me it definitely is, reaffirming Hyundais' note that they do not need a V6 since most of their customer base doesn't go down that road anyways on the Sonata's of past.

Bottom line is that even the Altima 3.5, Accord V6, Camry V6, etc. sell in low numbers compared to the 4 banger versions. So why try to nudge into a market that is small and not flattering for them since most of their V6's are not very potent to begin with. Many of these cars are hard to tell from their V6 bretherend aside from some badging, even the Altima 2.5 has dual exhausts.

Those numbers from I4 turbo are quite hard to believe seeing BMW's award winning I6 Turbo only produces 40 more Horsepower. Hyundai should offer an AWD version of Sonata and also put this new engine in a more sporty car.
Good job Hyundai and also good marketing as most buyers in this class settle for 4 cylinder option automatically as they think V6 will drink lot of fuel(some even think the fuel consumption of V6 is almost double), most of them don't even look at V6 variant when they go to showrooms buying a Camry or Accord because they have already made their mind they would get 4 cylinder ONLY so now when customers will ask for a 4 cylinder sonata, the salesmen will have 2 variants to sell them and i am sure the pricier option will also do well this time, just because it is 'NOT A V6'. Hyundai maybe have a game changer here.
Japan big 3 will have to come up with great new cars to compete with Sonata now.

See this needs to be said about Hyundai's 2.0 DI turbo. It is a patented twin-scroll design in no way is it similar to BMW's design although it shares the same efficiency in terms of maximizing power and FE.

By the way, because of the twin-scroll design and DI engine there is no "turbo lag" as experienced in previous turbo.
