Audi Could Overtake BMW As Number One Premium Automaker Within Next 18 Months

Audi Could Overtake BMW As Number One Premium Automaker Within Next 18 Months
Audi is on a roll. It has passed Mercedes-Benz to become No. 2 in global premium car sales and predicts its operating profit will exceed its revenues this year. If the new A1 entry-premium car is as successful as early orders indicate, BMW may be bumped from its place as the world's top-selling premium brand -- a goal that Audi plans to reach by 2015.

CEO Rupert Stadler says Audi will someday be the world's No. 1 premium brand, but refuses to get caught up in the excitement of it happening ahead of schedule. He says Audi is reaching new heights because of its growing portfolio of successful products, its leadership in the world's largest market and its strengthening position in the U.S. market.

I think by brand is an odd way to measure sales for them introducing a"mini" competitor if thats the case they should group Mini's numbers in with the BMW "brands" numbers......

The A1 is a luxury car by any standard, specially when compared to any car in this class. It happens that the Mini sells well in this class - although not for much longer. Audi has managed to create a competitor without having to buy a different brand to do the job in this class, staying true to its philosophy.

Audi could also use VW numbers to match up against the Mini, but it does not need to do that. Audi can handle BMW with itw own products, thank you very much.

Great job Audi! Audi talk is done on the racetrack and sales, not on fashion magazines and fabricated commercials.

so Audi selling more cars that BMW is TOYOTA mass production but BMW selling more then Audi isn't ?

Audi sells more A6's then BMW does 5 series, more A8's then the 7 Series, and more Q7's then the X5 (not in the usa)

BMW sells more cars because they have more models and because they use the most incentives of any IHG car in the USA market (their top market and Audis 4th larges market)

In China Audi sells mostly A6's A8's and the Q7's

Keep crying as your brand joins forces with MB or is taken over by Indian Investors

Out of interest, I would like to see the Global Sales figures for each model if you have a link?

Hypotheticals are sooooooo informative.

Sales numbers don't make them a better brand or mean that they sell a better product.. I am a BMW fan and I couldn't care less if we are number 1, 2 or 3. It's just about bragging rights...

I like BMW as well, but that does sound like what everyone else says when the Lexus boys tout their number one figures in the US.

I guess it all depends if you want a focused demographic or broad appeal. Neither one is the wrong approach. I'll take a focus demographic over broad appeal any day.

Lexus can say that without anytype of sham, Audi on the other hand makes mini competitor lol and using there "mini" competitors numbers to say they sell more cars than BMW as a brand. Truth in engineering??? yeah they should work on that, and truth in reporting as well...

Sure, once you loose that sales lead status, you conveniently stop caring about it. We understand your view perfectly.

Bragging rights?
Audi domination in Le Mans in the past 10 years. DTM in the past 5 yrs. Awards left and right from best design, best engine, best sports car, best green car, etc.

BMW failure in F1. Now it wants to reenter DTM under its own special conditions (cause it seems BMW can't compete with Audi and MB otherwise).

Soooo... I'd say you missed the boat.

Mean Vulcan...

I am more than happy for you to go back and find any and all posts where I state any joy that BMW are number 1... what I'm wondering is if it is that important to the Audi fan boys that they are number one, how have they lived with themselves for so long being second or third best? May as well just all cry in to their pillows, or commit suicide...

Also, evidentley you know nothing about motorsport other than what you read in Audi press releases, so it's no wonder you don't really have a clue what you are talking about - I'm suprised you are not claiming that quattro gives the DTM cars the edge and bragging about how the R15+ beat the M3 GT2 at LM!!

I read today the International Engine of the year awards...

BMW: 4 category wins
Audi: 1 category win

.. just for you information, want to brag about that?

Number one in sales, but not number one in desirable vehicles. The only Audi I would choose over any BMW is the R8. The rest of the Audi's lineup is overpriced, underpowered or both.

Lexsux - Most desired? How come the latest Forbes list of America's 10 Hardest To Get Cars The following Audi's appear?
S4
A5
S6
R8

That is 4 of the 10 listed.

Other than the S4 and R8. None of the cars listed interest me. I doubt that list has any Value. The S6 is dated and well overdue for as redesign. The S6 doesn't even come close to competing with the current M5. I could care less about the masses

because Audi keeps their stock low here....009 see this is my point about the whole sham thing creating a product shortage isnt real....in reality the R8 isnt selling well and neither is the S6 the A5 is selling well for good reason the 4cylinder model(and it really is a good car) but the S4 is another one that is simply low on supply......not to mention there were other cars on that list...

BMWDriver- Audi's stock is low because they are sold out of cars

Worldwide sales is going crazy. We are down to about 20 new cars in stock and we should have 150 or so. I am getting entire shipments coming in pre-sold

They are selling more cars in the USA so they are not "holding back" cars. Why do you think they would hold back cars? They are increasing production but that takes time. I am sure the new factories and shifts will help

Then if the RS6 is underpowered what you think about the M5 aginst it?...Most of high performance Audis have more power than any BMW. It is not bad if like BMW. I like Mercedes and I don´t care if Audi is N°1 in sales....MB still my favorite. But for sure I won´t say that Audi is underpowered. Hopefuly the new M5 will have as much power as the RS6 but I doubt it...BMW will go for usual path when they are not able to get some extra power....light materials as CF or if it is necessary to remove some metal from the structure to get a lighter car..(even if that afect the security)...now that´s my opinion not the general.

I'm waiting until the dust settles before I congratulate Audi for becoming Number 1. A lot can happen in 18 months.

As an interesting note, years ago, when BMW was climbing and poised to overtake Mercedes in the coveted Number One spot, BMW fans on this list celebrated that significant prospect. And when BMW finally overtook MB, that meaningful achievement was noted and praised by those who liked the brand.

But now that Audi *appears* to be doing something similar, the BMW Fan Club is singing a different song of how being Number One in sales is no longer a big deal (like it used to be). My, how times have changed.

Childish...

Dont get the BMW fanboys panties in a wad with this post. Funny how if there is not so positive posts about any other brand, they are the first ones to blab on badly about those brands, but when its their beloved holier than thou BMW they become, and look for every reason to be defensive! I say get over yourselves and BMW!

18 months? No.

This really is an open field right now as all three brands have a huge array of products coming out in the next 1-3 years. Even if Audi does manage to do it they may not keep the title long as it is soooooooo competitive between them.

Just shows how little people know about cars when they choose Audi over other brands, Audi has some of the most overpriced cars when you compare them to others in their class, their cars get outperformed constantly. Audi puts v10 engines in their sedans and makes them nearly as slow as a v6, their cars look good but that is all.

"Just shows how little 'giants10' know about cars". I own both an Audi and BMW. Both car companies make a fine product with each giving customers a little different driving feel. Generally, I've paid MORE for my BMW's than my Audi cars because I'm paying for the BMW name and the mainteance program. Before you start bashing Audi, their little 4 cylinder engine has MORE torque (258 lb) than BMW's 328 series. It's not necessarily about the HP, but torque too. They won many awards for that 4-banger. BMW twin turbo engine is silky smooth. I went to the local dealer to consider buying a new 2011 335i and nearly choked on the close to $60K price tag. So for almost $60K you think they would install more than run flat tires (they're awful riding & expensive to replace tires). I'll take a regular performance tire over a run flat anyday. So let's try not think neither car company doesn't have room for improvement. They both make a nice product.

The Audi 4-cylinder Direct Injection engines are noisy. They make a rattling noise that's reminiscent of a diesel engine.
