2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to receive 5.0-liter V8. will take on Mustang 5.0!
According to the latest reports, Hyundai is currently working on a 5.0-liter V8 engine capable to deliver 429 hp at 6500rpm and 376 lb-ft at 5000 rpm.

This means that if the V8 engine will be installed on the Genesis Coupe, than this car will easily take on the 2011 Ford Mustang 5.0 which carries 412 hp developed by its 5.0-liter V8. Also, this engine will also be a direct hit to Infiniti which has the 5.6-liter engine developing 420 hp. Hyundai has currently a 4.6-liter engine delivering 375 hp and 333 lb-ft.

Really suprised, so what will it call? Genesis-F?

Wouldn't the "M" for "Mullet" edition work better for maybe a Mustang or "insert any other loud and obnoxious, can't take a turn over 40mph without rolling over muscle car here". See it's easy to make fun both ways.

It looks like the are going for all of the marbles with the Genesis.

Yes they are trying to take the genesis as far as they can take and why not its probably one of their best selling cars. but a 5.0 litre V8 now thats just crazy but it seems like Hyundai doesnt want to follow the competition no more they are the competition IMO. This car has already have some fast and furious teenagers and 20 year olds wanting this car. Now i guess TOyota should reconsider the Supra but I am sure it still wont match the value of the Genesis coupe. even the last generation Supra was going for $40k brand new but since they are not going to make this car I wonder what toyota has installed for this......Hyundai once again KUDOS to your progression

You gotta admire the balls Hyundai has grown lately. And considering how well the Genesis coupe did in Motortrends big ponycar test, this V8 should make things very interesting.

You mean the very biased report that picked the slowest of the three cars? give me a break.

Yea, that 'biased' comparison where it proved itself the only car that felt and drove like a sports car designed this decade, unlike the two pigs and the non-IRS pony car.

And last I checked, 5.4 seconds is not only NOT slow, but it's faster than the Camaro's 5.7 and light-years faster than the challenger's leisurely 7.5.

One things for sure, Hyundai needs to redesign the front grill on this car.

I question if there is enough room in the engine compartment for a V8. Also the front to rear balance may make it a bit nose heavy. The V6 weighs more then the Mustang V6. I would assume this will be the case for the V8.Also Mustangs "5.0" may have more torque then Hyundays V8.

It shows how hard Hyundai/Kia are working and trying developing new technologies. Everyday there are news of their new cars or engines or concepts.
New 400BHP+ engine from Hyundai will be interesting and seeing their other models it would be very affordable also. Hyundai should make an X5 competitor and put that engine in it.

I know it's a waste of the thought process to try to reason with any delusional idiot (such as yourself) that loves toyota, but try to grasp the fact that NO company is even thinking about that hideous monstrosity called the supra. It's dead, thankfully, and the only reason you peabrains hold on to its memory for dear life is because that pu55y company you adore so much is too scared to make anything REMOTELY close to a sports car.

That said, the Gen coupe looks, oh I dont know, a MILLION times better than that fugly supra could have ever hoped to. And it's only their first stab at something toyota is too sacless to try, meaning while the Gen just grows in popularity, all you toyota fanboys have to cling to is a fading memory. Sad....

This engine will be in the facelifted Genesis sedan, but doesn't look like it'll make it into the coupe:

Asked whether or not the 5.0-liter engine would fit into the Genesis Coupe, a Hyundai engineer said yes, "but we have chosen not to do that, possibly for the next generation." -Edmunds.com

If it actually does come out I would love to see this competition. Obviously the Mustang is the king of pony cars right now but having some tough competition will only release better products for the consumer. Who cares if it comes from Korea? Government Motors can't compete anymore and who knows what Dodge is doing. So if the Euros and Japs aren't doing anything in this market lets see how the Koreans hold up.

If they did a V8... they should have the 3.8L V6 as the base engine. With the weight of the car, the 2.0L doesn't make sense. The Civic Si, Mustang, and Camaro are all faster than it... and the Altima Coupe and Scion tC aren't too far behind.

The 4 cylinder model was vital to the Gen. Coupe's inception (with the "Tuner Crowd" supposedly being its target audience). I can't imagine Hyundai throwing that away by negating the point of an I4 base engine and making the car heavier to support a V8.
I think this new V8 is for the Equus or Genesis.

This would also be a dangerous move for Hyundai. It is no surprise that this often gets pitted up against the G37... most likely, putting a V8 in this car would push the cost over that $35,000 price-range... and get into G37 price territory... for a car you have to service with other Elantras and Sonatas.

A lot of americans traded in their beloved Caddy's and Lincolns for Lexus, Acura and Infinitis...so again why wouldn't they go in a different "direction" over just muscle...most roads do have turns...these type of comments mean all of you who discredit Hyundai than would discredit Supras, 350Z, STi, Evo, GTR, IS-F etc that all are from compainies that started out making inexpensive, small cars. Oh, and why would someone buy a Genesis Coupe over Mustang and Camaro? Believe it or not, there are some people that don't like the way those two cars look, and might prefer the way the coupe looks, or just like their are people who like american muscle cars, there are some that prefer imports...also 100k warranty dosen't hurt.

I don't think it sounds very cool to say "I drive a mustang". If we are all into flaming mood...most mustangs I've seen make more noise with no performance to back up the noise! And you service your "stang" with other Ford fiestas and focuses! I think every auto mfgr is capable of making a good car, Ford included, and those who still discredit Hyundai's are unfortunatly biased and not well informed. Just my 2 cents.

We are having this conversation because, 1. People are talking about it, and 2. Hyundai, arguably now makes an equal or some might even say better product than Ford.

So the argument is because they started out making econo cars they are not capable of making something worthwhile? By that argument....because Cadillac always made soft boat like cars they aren't able to produce a performance car? I would say the cts-v was a different direction for Cadillac! Also the quality has improved immensely.

1. Hyundai started out importing very inexpensive economy cars that, to your point were not well made...however the US did not get their best cars in the beginning...those were sold domestically.
2. Unfortunately American made cars have just been awful in both quality and design for a good 10-15 yrs...they have gotten a lot better now...so is it foolish of lets say Cadillac to crash the beloved high performance super sedan market that already consists of proven "iconic" cars like the BMW M5 or Mercedes AMG E63? Heck no, I had the CTS-V on my short list of cars, and it is a great car. One could argue that they would have done better going after the customers they know best...the 55 plus big car segment. They have proven in tests and comparisons, just like the Genesis, they can hang and have actually made a good product.
3. The whole copy-cat argument is so stupid...all car companies take ideas from each other, be it styling cues or technology. Notice how the bread and butter models tend to be a touch more restrained, usually especially in higher price tagged cars aiming at older demos and the more unique designs for better or worse tend to be either less expensive or completely out of this world high. This is not to say there are always exceptions to the rule. Lets all face it, Hyundai has come a long way here in the states and We of late has come out with one good car after another...the more we try to discredit this company with the tired same arguments the more ill informed we all sound. Time to start giving this company props for stepping up and start debating on actual merits of individual cars not just perceptions!

I actually drove the 2.0T version of the Genesis Coupe with a 6 speed manual. While I found the shift to be smooth and accurate, the clutch was another issue entirely. The takeup was abrupt and there was more than a hint of driveline shunt as I pulled away from a full stop. It was also almost impossible to drive smoothly, requiring concentration to execute a smooth shift. It became annoying after about 10 minutes of dricing around the city. I can categorically state that I wouldn't touch the manual version of this car with a 10 foot pole. Way too unrefined.

I say: bring it on...and let the comparisons begin. Without competition we won't get really good cars, and the American big boys will have to put their thinking caps on as to how to improve themselves. And, the Japanese too. There is too much resting on their laurels going on and let them throw down the gauntlet with a new V-8 on a wanna-be sports coupe.

Wow, got some Hyundai haters on here. Why so much animosity? And whoever says a car with 300+ hp is slow is insane, considering that the majority of the time you spend in your car is going an average speed of 50mph. I agree the front end of the gen coupe is pretty ugly, so much so in fact that I would only consider buying it if I could immediately install a better looking body kit front bumper. It isn't as ugly as a Subaru impreza, which helps (and I still respect Subaru's engines regardless of exterior). I'm sure most of you punks hatin' on the gen coupe haven't even driven it, so unless you've personally test driven this vehicle for a good week, don't go saying stupid sh** about a car you've never sat in. And if you were a true car lover, you'd have some respect for a car company trying to better it's lineup for people that may not be able to afford an Infiniti or Lexus. You bet I'd choose an IS 250f or g37 over a gen coupe, but for my price bracket, I can go out and buy a sports car with brembo breaks and 300hp for less than 32g and I'm frickin happy about that. You must remember that Hyundai is one of the youngest car companies out there, and like any smart business, they're going to take cues from the giants, hence the "copycat" moniker, only they're avoiding the mistakes of the other brands. Chevy should never have taken away the camaro, ford continuously trying to make the Taurus cool, Toyota's recalls and the death of the celica and supra, Audi and their inability to make their electronics last past 4 years, the list goes on, yet Hyundai keeps getting better without any baggage. They started out as cheap, but they're moving fast from that perception.

it will be like 35 grand ~ 40 grand to buy this one with full options or cheaper so that hyundai can compete with 2011 mustang gt or 2011 camaro ss but i'm sure that this shitty one will have better interior than any other american muscle car.
