Thumbs UP or DOWN: Congress Mulling Funding For Device To Detect Alcohol In Driver's System
One issue that has seemed to plague our society is drunk driving.

Whether it is a hot celebrity, the fire chief down the street or just a foolish kid, it seems to pop up in the neighborhood papers more often than you would think. Of course this has led to many deaths and other unfortunate situations, such as individuals being paralyzed.

And there is no genuine way to fight this problem, until now that is.

It sounds like something from The Jetson's but a government-auto industry program is attempting to rally consumers to go along with installing a device capable of detecting drunk drivers in all new vehicles.

Yup, you better put down that beer. Time to sober up, ladies and gentlemen...

**AutoSpies does not condone the use of any alcohol or narcotic while driving any vehicle

A government-auto industry program that hopes consumers will go along with putting a device to detect drunken drivers in all new vehicles is on track to get a six-fold increase in funding that greatly increases its viability.

The device, which would automatically sniff the driver’s breath or use a light beam to test the alcohol content of tissue, would prevent the operator from starting the vehicle. There is no plan for the device to be mandatory. Those working on the project hope consumers will accept the alcohol interlock voluntarily because of the safety advantages.

The program has been operating on $2 million a year, but that would increase to $12 million a year after it was added to the new Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010, which is awaiting consideration by the Senate....

I really don't like the nanny state and think the penalties should be greater for drunk driving, like punishable by death.

Thumbs up as long as its not mandatory. Some people may choose to buy it as an option. Maybe some prior defenders should be required to have this as some already do. If they make it mandatory I would say thumbs down.
