What's So Special About Toyota's STAR Safety System
So, if you're like this New York Times writer and have been ambushed by Toyota's latest ad campaign highlighting the STAR safety system, you may wonder exactly what it is.

I mean, you would expect the 30-second spot to detail that but it doesn't.

According to The New York Times piece, it is a system that really isn't all that innovative. It actually just combines Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, an ABS system, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist.

Here's the catch, however. Toyota is the only full-line manufacturer to incorporate all of this tech on EVERY single model...

For the full details, take a look at The New York Times' take on Toyota's recent advertising blitz

Toyota knows where to find me, if the company’s current Star Safety System advertising campaign is any indication.

Its commercials have found me watching the “NBC Nightly News.” Tracked me down DVRing “The Daily Show.” Ambushed me on “The Colbert Report.” Bombarded me through the NBA Finals. And washed over me on the Web. If ever there was an advertising campaign worthy of the term “blitz,” this is it.

The commercials are pointed straight at the heart. Moms holding babies, concerned-looking young men and entire families testify in silence, overlaid with bold red type that announces “everyone deserves to be safe,” and “peace of mind.” In the backgrounds, components assemble and disassemble themselves in a ballet of technological reassurance.

The Star Safety System is the star. The ads announce that “Toyota is the first full-line manufacturer to make the Star Safety System standard on all vehicles...

Looks like Toyota making a new ad to distract from the past year of vehicle recalls. They'll make the average consumer think they've taken all these "additional" precautions to prevent unintended acceleration and loss of steering control/grip during adverse weather or emergency maneuvers.Just marketing fodder.

wow, you resorted to f-bombs lol. I'm sorry, it's ok to be a fan of something lol. Just don't expect everyone to agree or respect you if you believe in a corporate logo with that much blind faith.

Not much of a safety system with no equipment to call the right authorities in the event of a crash

Give me On Star instead

every one of these is either mandated already of will be in the near future. They have been on the majority of cars since 2000. only those buying the bottom line models would not have them.

Here is a suggestion:

Maybe follow up with standard 4 wheel disc brakes on all models, and an ecu that is smart enough to see the both brakes and gas are floored and actually do something about it.

Now that would be a leading car company...no that is VW

can you prove that the toyota DID NOT do anything about it 009? up to this date, no one can prove anything...not toyota, no referrred testing or independent testing companues nor gov't testing. NASA couldn't even find fault after their testing either.

"every one of these is either mandated already of WILL BE in the near future."

so toyota seems to be ahead of the game if they will be???

009-always great for sh!t talk

The NASA findings won't come out until next year last time I heard. But if you have evidence to the contrary please let us know.

Right now the conflicting input software revision isn't on any Toyota that I am aware of (it takes longer than that to get it written, tested, and in the pipeline). But then again if I am wrong I feel reasonably sure you will let me know.

So right now they are touting what they have, and that is pretty much the standard stuff most any car company has.

well if there wasn't a problem then what did Toyota fix? and why did it take so many years for them to implement that fix? And why are they paying millions of dollars to keep ex employees from spreading internal documents? Normally you sue their asses, not hand over briefcases of money... also, can you show me where Nasa didn't find anything? I haven't read that article yet.

A lot of effort! but toyota still misses out on the basics of safety and that starts with vehicle control, body structure and thorough in house crash testing. And this means real world crash testing (eg. Volvo, Benz, BMW, VW/Audi) and not just testing to pass the NHTSA or IIHC.

Every mainline manufacturer has recalls Toyota has changed the game by making what was optional safety equipment, standard. As consumers, it all meat and gravy !

As for the accelerating issue, it was pretty much a body check blow to Toyota as they were blamed for something that, NHTSA, research groups and NASA haven't been able to confirm. Its a price they paid cause they were too successful and refused to help bail out GM / UAW.

As for manufacturers like VW, they effectively suck across the board as their electronics and electrical systems have always been suspect. Not to mention that outside the 2.0 T (and old 1.8T) engine their non diesel motors are substandard by a large margin.
Frankly the problems VW have in quality issues is directly reflected in their minuscule market share in the US.

The Journalist Dexter Ford is wrong, as many of you who say Toyota is behind.

Anyone who really knows about cars knows these 5 safety features existed long ago, but still no ''full-line manufacturer'' has included them in every model. Only luxury car manufacturers included them on every model, duh! thats why you pay more, right?!

Anyways, everyone is missing the news here, Toyota really IS the only ''full line manufacturer''-(from economy cars to luxury level - Yaris to Avalon) who started to include these features on every model STANDARD*****.

Even the journalist says it at the end of the article:

''Indeed, other mass brands, including Honda, Ford and Chevy, leave off at least one of the five Star System features on their least-expensive models. To get Vehicle Stability Assist on the Honda Fit, for instance, you have to opt for the more-expensive nav-system-equipped Sport model. The Ford Focus Web site doesn’t mention brake assist, traction control or electronic brake force distribution. And ABS is optional on most Chevy Aveo models and is not available at all on the base model.''

So to Joe_Limon, 009 and most of you who don't get the real picture... READ ON.

P.S. Toyota has all the right to make any publicity they want on SAFETY, because they are paying for it... anything is LEGAL to stop GM and Ford from fooling people that they are safer than any Toyota.

I never said they are stupid, but I do really want to say, no matter how much people hate Toyota, or post all of their mistakes, I know they will try to stay on top. Japanese may not be good at playing soccer like Brazil, or having basketball stars like, Michael Jordan, but they do really are the best ones at making everything more reliable than any competition.

With this in mind, all these bad days for Toyota, will just make them even stronger, and for that GM, FORD, etc... should keep pace.
