2010 Mazda MX5 Miyako Special Edition Unveiled
Continuing to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the world’s best-selling roadster, Mazda has introduced a new ‘summer special edition’ version of its iconic sportscar, named the Mazda MX-5 Miyako.

The new model, which is on sale from 1 July, is available in two versions – the 1.8i Miyako soft-top priced at £18,385 (on-the-road) and the more powerful 2.0i Miyako roadster coupe with the world’s fastest folding powered roof (up or down in 12 seconds), priced at £20,885 (on-the-road).

The name ‘Miyako’ is taken from the idyllic Japanese holiday island of Miyako-jima, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful spots in Japan and the perfect location for open-top motoring.

The new Miyako is generously equipped with the interior benefitting from unique Medici premium perforated black leather trim with a red underlay and stitching, special badging, floor mats and climate control air-conditioning. The exterior includes front fog lamps, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, a front suspension strut brace (for improved steering response), and free metallic paint.

Just give me the next Miata with 240 pounds less weight, direct-injection and the more powerful, more fuel efficient Sky-D engine already. If Mazda can shave off 240 lbs on the new Mazda 2, then Mazda definitely can do the same for the next generation Miata. And bring it out next year as the 2012 model. Earlier rather than later. Thanks.

+1, 2447 lbs is good... but not great from a car that tiny. I mean, for the same price, the bloated Mini Cooper S is only 250lbs heavier then the Miata and has room for 4...

?? That maddening front grill "smile" is too much for me.

really? I don't really notice it too much on the miata, it's the mazda3 that is maddening to me.

Wow .. to compare a RWD, tossable roadster like the Miata to a FWD hash like the Mini Cooper is a travesty to anybody who is an auto enthusiast.
It betrays an absolute lack of understanding about driving and car dynamics .
I like the Miata to continue to have the light RWD architecture it currently has.

izfuney, if you care to notice, I wasn't comparing driving dynamics or anything to do with performance. I was comparing weights, the cooper has a larger engine, far more interior space and has overall larger dimensions, yet the "tiny" miata is only 250lbs lighter. Tell me one reason why the miata is almost 2500lbs? In my mind it should be far closer to 2000lbs given the size of its engine and overall size.

Structural integrity is the reason why the Miata is near 2500 lbs. Have you driven one? It's a fantastic car.

structual integrity is a half assed reason, the mini platform is also really solid. The Mx5 still drives good because it's 2500 lbs! that is pretty light, and with fully independent suspension I wouldn't expect anything less. But in a way, I still am expecting less... in terms of weight, it's still far too heavy for its minuscule size. Look at the prius, it doesn't have a rigid chassis, but it still has all the extra hybrid weigh holding it down and is rated at a midsized car and still is only about 300lbs heavier then the miata.
