IT LIVES! The BMW M8 Is Resurrected!
This is probably one of the greatest BMW's that the Bavarians never built.

It is everything you could want in an M. Plus, it features the unbelievable S70 powerplant. My God, how I thought I would never see you again. Originally thought to have been destroyed years ago, we have been proven wrong as BMW has hid this particular vehicle away from prying eyes.

This is nearly as good as Porsche keeping the 918 under wraps until the auto show. Is this a shoe-in for shock of the year?

As said by a BMW employee:

"If dreams and ambition are embodied in every prototype, this one still stands out."

Are you impressed with the original M8 or is this car not blowing your doors off?

The M8-Prototype is perhaps the best-kept secret of BMW and for the first time, BMW has unveiled the on-off car in front of journalists at the BMW Museum in Munich. Despite several false reports in the past, the M8 prototype has not been destroyed by BMW and it still exists in a special facility in Munich.

While our complete and highly detailed story is in works, here are some quick details. The M8 was equipped with a V12 prototype engine based on the S70 engine, producing around 550 horsepower...

this is my all time favorite timeless BMW, this car has stood the test of time and I was in Long Island NY in the begining of june and I was coming down the belt parkway and I saw an Black 850Csi(EXTREMLEY RARE) with the gray interior. If i had money to throw around i would purchase an 850 and do a frame off restoration on it I love this car probably better than any BMW i like now. I cant wait to see the new M8 it should be something spectacular (I HOPE)

They destroyed the test mules. This one is buried deep in the classic building. Along with the rarely seen E31 850Ci Cabriolet which did not get built because of weight & cost. The E31 M8 was deemed to costly to build in the numbers needed to off set the build cost. So the market got the E31 850CSi, which BMW M built 1,510 units. And 225 came to the US. This car was profiled in BMW Car Magazine 4 months ago. They unprecdented access to this particular car!

@vladyxa

It is pointing out how many thought the car was dead/crushed but in reality it lives on, officially.

Until now it was mostly speculation and there was uncertainty.

Looks better than any current BMW. Why didnt they use this design language instead?

Great article... the 8 series was the car that made me love cars. I remember always seeing them parked outside the nightclubs and barber shops where the gangsters and dope boys hung out. one guy in my neighborhood had a bright red 850Ci with red inserts on his black leather seats, in the spring he would drive it with the windows down to show the pillarless window frames... I never wanted anything so bad, that dude was my hero.

I still want an 8 series to this day. If I had disposable income, an 850CSI or a Dinan 850 would be my daily driver.

The engine picture looks great. I remember high school when the 635csi and in college the 850i started a admiration for BMW coupes. Hope the new 6-series does not disappoint.

Notice no one has to say "this looks better in person than photos" or "you'll see, this design language will some day be classic" or "it's a great car, you'll get used to the way it looks and even love it one day."

Back in 1995 I had the opportunity to see not one, but TWO 850CSis on the same London street on the same day at the same time. That was an amasing thing for me to see at the time. It would still get my attention today!

Hey B7FAN, I will assume you are a bimmerfan. The name gives it away. The E31 8 Series is one of my all time fav cars. As much as we would like for BMW AG to bring the thing back, they will not. The current E63/E64 is it's spiritual succssor, they just used the 6 because it had a better place in the market and the guy's that owned the E24 6 Series we in the demographic group for the new 6 when it came out in the US market in 04. And an E31 850CSi at idle makes me weak in the knees, it has two sounds and very distinct over each other. A V-12 with a 6-speed manual. Sweet like candy ride!!!!

An BMW Individual E31 is at the top of my list. Info is available on http://www.8coupe.com/.

Cheers gentlemen & happy 4th!

That was not the only test mule. This was the finshed car shown to the Board of Directors. It was decided not to build it. The other test mules were summiarliy destroyed. The really rare car is the E31 850i Cabriolet. BMW AG has only released access to this very rare car. This line-up and it's planning was only recently realized with the E63 6 Series Coupe & E64 6 Series Cabriolet.

BMW had dreams of coupes & cabriolets for the 8 Series. But after first year intial sales tailed off of the E31 it was not pursued to production. The E31 was really not a successor to the much loved E24 6 Series. Mercedes-Benz had moved up market with a big coupe. And BMW AG decided to go after a new demographic. A V12 powered GT car that can rule the Autobahn. Too bad a recession showed up right after launch.

And the design language for the car was taken straight out of nature. The inspiration for it's shape was a tiger shark. So it's silhouette will always look great, it looks like a apex predator on the move. How cool is!!!! Great car. Long live the 8 Series. 850CSi!!!!!!!
