AMERICA AT WAR: Who Makes The Best AMERICAN Cars Today? GM or Ford?
So much has changed in the car business in the last couple years that it's hard to keep up.

American cars today are a whole different breed than some of the beauties (sarcastic) the American Car companies were producing say just 5 years ago.

So in today's game WHO is better?

GM or Ford.

What a great shootout this 4th of July!

Tell us who and why!

Discuss!

Also, enjoy some nice shots from the 4th celebrations here in San Diego today!

Ford has sync and better small cars GM has better trucks and suv's they both developed the Eco boost together but Ford put it on the market first. I will reserve my decision unrolled the new Malibu is on the market because the mid size car land is where the battle is fought and won.

In addition Cadillac is being compared to BMW / MB something that Lincoln has never came remotely close to. Buick to Lexus with the release of the lacrosse.

Ford makes way better trucks, what does Chevy make to compete with the F-150 Raptor? What about the one ton Ford against the Chev? In remote logging communities Ford dominate in numbers for a reason. Chev is a nicer city truck, a little smother ride and is more car like, so if that is what you value then Chev is better.

GM didn't develop play any part in the the Ecoboost engines. Ford/GM worked together on the FWD 6 speed automatics but not the engine.

Actually GM has had "Eco Boost" for a while now way before Ford but it was never marketed right. The Pontiac Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Red Line, Colbalt SS, and HHR SS all had that technology. Turbo charged and Direct Injection that is all an eco boost is.

calvarez1126 ,

NO it isn't. Ecoboost is Ford's name for its DI, turbocharged V6 and upcoming 4 cylinder engines. GM also has a DI turbocharged 4 cylinder, the LNF (a 2.0 version of the DI/T EcoTEC series). Ford has released its Ecoboost V6 but not a production Ecoboost I4. The Ford and GM engines share NO parts, no software, no production. They are COMPLETELY different.

You are confusing the Ecoboost branding with DI turbo engines. The two are completely separate and distinct. Would you say that Hyundai's new DI turbo 4 cylinder is an Ecoboost too?

"That's easy. GM cars = crap on wheels."

That is funny just last Friday Toyota recalled over 100,000 Lexus's and before that Toyota has had more recalls than ALL the other automakers combined for the last two years.

I'd buy a GM/Ford car before I would by a Toyota. Toyota has had about 4 recalls this year averaging about a recall every other month. Just pitiful for ANY car company and the Toyota boys still blindly defend this failing brand and GM who clearly has improved garbage? This is fan boyism at its best.

OK, here is the most important thing, America is making great cars, no not every model from every brand, but distinct competitors in many segments....I had a rental Milan when my Lexus was in shop and was very impressed with switchgear, performance, feel, cohesiveness, and please, before you yap about driving a Lexus, which is a well made reliable sofa on wheels, I am 6'7", and don't fit in any BMW, Benz, Audi, CTS, and don't drive trucks/SUV.

If I didn't need a big sedan for work, good cars to in my opinion are:
CTS, (please stop complaining about styling, some people also like spicy food) New Regal (yes a rebadged Opel but it still is here!), Fusion, Malibu...

Enjoy, rip apart as necessary, but this time of year does get one thinking of the possibilities that this country offers.
My father was the first born in this country, my grandfather was a farmer and coal miner, dad went to Ford Technical College, was Chief Engineer on a destroyer in WWII,was able to raise his family in Greenwich CT back when it was a nice waterfront town and not a megalopolis of money touchers, and always respected well crafted autos.

Here is the point, and it is a shame it occurs as sales dive from 16 mil to 11 mil, but we make great cars here, yes some are Hyundais, and some are Fords, and yes some Fords are made in Mexico, so if you want to tear apart every point have at it, but interior fitment and styling, exterior gap issues, engine performance, these things are all coming together. Not for every model, and yes it is always a rising bar we are trying to hit, but are you really gonna rain on my parade if I am a bit proud of what we can make here?

Super Car/Sports Car - GM = Corvette. Obvious.
Muscle Car - Ford = Mustang. I love the 5.0.
Truck/SUV - Tie = Trucks are the meat and potatoes of both companies. Style and features.
Luxury - GM = Cadillac / Buick. Hands down beat Lincoln.
Crossover - GM = Buick Enclave. Has the edge on Lincoln MKZ.

There's more categories i know but I have to run. Keep it going. Will debate later.

The MKZ is a Fusion platform mate (a midsize sedan). The MKT is what you are thinking of but I agree.

Also your post illustrates how horrible their naming convention is, and how poorly it is received by the customer.

I agree, JD powers is BS, They must be bribed or something? There are many examples of them contradicting themselves in the past like when they didn't suggest the Pontiac Vibe and suggested the Matrix, they are the same car! The next year they included it because they realized that they are loosing credibility, and not once did they mention oil sludge problems for Toyota, If you don't believe me about the oil sludge problems just google it,lol

GM has more upside then Ford, because it has completely eliminated its pension obligations through bankruptcy. The question is whether they can take advantage of this huge cost savings to re-invest in R&D and product execution.

Ford has better designers/execution, for now. The interior of most Ford products are of a higher grade than GM (for the same price). The Sync is great technology, but Ford needs an OnStar equivalent. I love that the new Ford Powerstroke Diesel is so awesome (needs to be put into an Expedition) and superior to GM's current diesel.

Today, the edge goes to Ford, but long term, GM has the guns to win due to its lower overhead. Ford is burdened with 10x more pension obligations than GM, that is going to be a drag on its budget.

I would say Ford for mainstream cars as their quality seems to be better than the GM alternatives. Gm for luxury and performance cars Lincoln seem to keep missing the luxury car mark and are overshadowed by the cheaper Ford versions, while GM's Buick and Cadillac are making great competitive cars and the Corvette and Camaro continue to impress

OMG!!!! uaw_lax has NOT made a comment yet?

Has the earth stopped spinning!?!

Seriously though, looking at those pics and judging by what I've seen at so many 4th of July parties/events I think we should rename it MILF day.

Oh yeah, Ford for CUV's and trucks, cars and SUV's for GM......

For trucks it goes to Ford, for cars its Ford, for performance cars it is not a cut and dry thing, Ford has the GT and chev has the Vett, they are both incredible, and the Mustang and the Camero? I'll take the Camero? I think, The Camero looks better, but I am not sure what performs better?

Lame post. GM would be redundant without the Bailout. Ford wins by a landslide.

GM all the way. Buick is taking steps to prove that they are deserving of being kept instead of Pontiac. I can't wait for the Lucerne to be replaced, and my dream of the Solstice being resurrected as a Buick of some sort being realised. Cadillac IS a force to be reconned with and stares everything BMW makes in the face without blinking an eye. Chevrolet is putting the fight to Toyota and NOTHING under $100k can out do a 'Vette. I applaud Ford for the steps they are making, but I am not as impressed with their strides as I am with GM's.

Just toda GM is asking for 5 Billion due to the potential downturn in new vehicle sales. Ford is in a better position for the future at the moment. Ford is also riding a popularity wave more then GM because they did not take any bailout money. True they do have debt but they are paying it off. I'm not saying that GM makes bad cars and they do have a few small advantages over Ford. Cadillac is still a better brand then Lincoln. However now that Ford is closing Mercury i think it wil be able to better concentrate on Lincoln. Further Ford has been working investing in engine technology (ecoboost). GM still has the styling edge over Ford. Buick is making some impressive strides in driving capability. In small cars Ford has the edge. In mid size bread and butter cars the Fusion and Taurus probably have the edge over Chevy. In the near luxury segment GM then overtakes Ford with Buick and Cadillac.Ford counters with more hybrid products then GM. The question is which company is best set up for the future. Ford has the R & D resources,GM has more product and has made great strides in China.Ford needs to really work on Lincoln. Still too many Ford based Lincoln products. I think they need to go RWD for their luxury car offerings and get off the Volvo platform. The Mondeo replacement for the Taurus is a step in the right direction for the main stream cars. Lincoln needs way more competative products. In summary Ford has a slight edge in quality but GM has better upper end product while Ford has better lower end product. (Too bad GM is making the Volt. They will lose money on everyone they make).

I have no respect for GM, it was the epitomy of poor managemet for decades and in all honesty didn't deserve a second chance. They are a strain and burden to U.S tax payers and all honesty most people in the finacial sector will tell you that they are still a mess. They recently, quietly asked the us government for 5 billion more. They paid off their first loan from the U.S taxpayers with another loan from the U.S taxpayers yet they lied to U.S taxpayers by putting out some B.S ad stating they have paid off they're debt to the U.S taxpayers. I currently own a 335i and a TL but in all honesty the new Taurus SHO is looking pretty apealing. Sorry I gotta say Ford hands down.
