REVIEW: 2011 Panamera And Cayenne V6-The NEW Ultimate Driving Machines??
Before I begin, erase all those unhappy memories of driving the last Cayenne, Q7 and Touareg V6's.

We can universally agree that those 6's were complete mismatches for those vehicles and an embarrassment to all three manufacturers.

They all shared the same flaw: too much weight, sloppy personalities and underpowered powertrains.

So as I settled into my Lufthansa Recaro Business Class seat, readying myself for the press launch of the Panamera and Cayenne V6's in Germany, I was mentally prepared for a similar, underwhelming drive experience.

2011 Panamera and Cayenne V6 Launch Photo Gallery

My only hope was me experiencing the amazing transformation of the Cayenne V8 and how it was SO unlike the the previous Cayenne in EVERY way.

It was GREAT.

Light on its feet, unstoppable in every situation including mastery on the track.

I thought if they could change it so much -- for the better -- from the last SUV, there was hope that Porsche could do the same magic tricks with the new V6.

And much to my delight they did.

These new V6's on the Cayenne and Panamera are NOTHING like their predecessors.

Power is balanced and more than sufficient for MOST people on the planet which is something you could NOT say of the last gen 6, which I called "The 6 for those in their 60's."

Teamed up with great transmissions and suspension setups I can honestly say that if you buy one, days later you will not be saying saying "I could of had a V8".

The best comparison I can make for you without driving them for yourselves -- and you definitely SHOULD -- is the Cayenne V6 has virtually the identical feeling of power on the road to the BMW X5 35 and the Panamera V6 to the BMW 535i.

And if you have read the reviews NO one says the BMW's are underpowered.

In fact the the 535i is the best 6 on earth so these are high compliments to the Porsche engineers.

Now, I could go on and on, and bore you about how they drive on the twisties but I won't because all you have to know is they are Porsches.

'Nuff said, they're awesome handlers.

I'm going to focus on the number one advantage and that is in the area of price.

On the last generation Cayenne, you had to buy the V8 to make it even palatable in my opinion, which then brought the price well north of the best-in-class BMW X5.

Not any more.

The Cayenne V6 pricing now is extremely competitive versus the usual suspects.

We also got to drive the diesel versions, which Porsche says are not coming to the USA but I will tell you this, if it does bring it here, THAT's the Cayenne I will own.

Best diesel SUV I've ever driven. EVER.

The new Porsches also overtake BMW in a couple departments:

1. The new interior quality BLOWS the BMW away. BMW will definitely have to step it up on the next gen SUV's and sedans. In fact I personally think the full leather/alcantara setup in the Panamera is nicer looking, more luxurious and younger looking than the Bentley coupe and convertible offerings  -- outside of ridiculously amazing Bentley lambswool carpets. I also absolutely love how they added the color nav screen into one of the dash dials and how on the Cayenne they put the cool compass in the sport chrono area of the dash.

2. Price/Value/Image equation. If it's possible, you can actually say now these new V6 Porsche's are semi-affordable. I just configured a 2011 BMW 535i with the important options and the tariff*** word choice does not make sense (tariff= tax)** was almost 70k. If you look on the Porsche site and flip through dealer inventories of the 2011's you will see you can get a Panamera V6 for just a couple grand more...starting around $73k. With reasonable options.

So all things considered, if you had to buy one or the other with YOUR money, would you do new a 5 or Panamera?

As much as I love BMW's and the new 5, this Agent would be driving the new Panamera V6 over a loaded 535i.

Why?

Because as cool as the 5 is, it looks like the standard run of the mill luxury sedan.

The Panamera on the other hand looks radical, brutal and exotic.

Really different from all the others.

Like a Lambo is different in the sports car world, this is the same only to luxo sedans.

GOOD different.

I guarantee you this...buy the Panny V6 and NO ONE will think that car is a $70k and change car.

This thing has the 'exotic' thing going for it all the way.

In a lot of ways it reminds me of a four door, stretched version of the best Jag in history, the 60's XKE Coupe.

And when you sit in it and see it's marvelous, best on earth interior, the BMW and all the other luxo sedans are DEAD.

One last thing...did you notice there is NO badging on the Panamera or Cayenne showing V6 anywhere inside or out?

The dirty little secret is your friends and the others seeing you zoom by them don't need to know how much money you saved!

Trust me when I tell you the V6 versions of these rides are the SLEEPER rides of 2011 so far.

Imagine better drivers than BMW's, luxury appointments as nice and more youthful as Bentley's and a "You talkin' to me?" image.

Now THAT's the new definition of an Ultimate Driving Machine and Joy.

And I just may have to buy one for myself.

Trip note: Agent 001 sadly reports that even though we were in Heidi Klum's hometown testing these rides, 'The Body' was no where to be found and there were no relative sightings. We did however enjoy awesome thirsty beverages, pretzels, pigs knuckles and the best German fare of any town we've yet to visit. And also note you can't trust all angels--001 catches a supposed angel (on right) smoking a doob in the main square of Cologne.

I like the new Cayenne - would definitely cross-shop with the X5...

The Panamera -- still too ugly...I know it drives great, but blech...

@u080570

I guess that's why they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Although I am still not adoring its rear end, I do love the presence the Panamera commands on the road. And, do not even get me started on the interior -- it's unreal.

If you want to be forward thinking and stand out from the crowd, the Panamera is really what you want to drive.

The 535 has better fuel and 0-60 numbers than both those cars.

Two points:

1) You just attempted to call an SUV an Ultimate Driving Machine.

2) That fatty driving the Panamera adds to much weight to the picture to give the car an performance benefits. Jillian Michaels needs to make a house call.

001, the reviews of the Panamera V6 have been good, but the reviews of the Cayenne V6 have not. MotorTrend, for example, said it was a great vehicle let down by a bad engine.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/suvs/112_1007_2011_porsche_cayenne_v6_first_drive/index.html

Personally I haven't driven a Cayenne with the new V6 but I'll be in the market for a new SUV at the end of the year and I will be checking them out. It would have to be pretty damn good though -- I have driven the new 2011 X5 35i and that's a hell of a drivetrain. I'll be damned if that thing wasn't as quick as last year's V8, AND it's rated at 17/25mpg. The Cayenne might outhandle the X5 at the limit, but the X5 handled better than I need an SUV to handle. Plus the vehicle would be for my wife anyway, and she isn't going to care about a 1mph or 0.01g difference in the slalom or on the skidpad. She also absolutely loved the "around view camera" (hats off to Infiniti with that one, they don't get the credit they deserve for coming out with that first).

As for the Panamera, that one does intrigue me, because I actually like the looks of the car (I know most people don't). But for the same (or less) than that Panamera V6 I could also get a loaded 2011 BMW 740i/Li or 550i/550xi, a loaded Mercedes E550/CLS550, a Jag XJ, etc. Or for not much more money I could get a new Audi A7 or A8, or eventually, even a new BMW 6 Gran Coupe. There's stiff competition in that segment from some really, really good cars.

Outside of the GranCoupe which would make it a toss up, I'd take the Panamera over all the others.

And the Panamera 6 is better than the Cayenne.

And my recommendation of the V6 Cayenne was based on the total package, not just engine.

The BMW 6 is still better on the X5, but interior quality, track performance, towing, off-road, suspension, interior ergonomics, all favor the Porsche.

that's where we're different -- I'd DEFINITELY take a 550i/xi M Sport (and ostensibly the GranCoupe, which I am so enamored with I have it as the background on my iPhone) or Jag XJ over a Panamera V6, and would probably take a 740 M Sport or E550 over one too. I'll reserve judgement on the A7 until it's out. Panamera Turbo? Hell yes, give me one. But the V6? Lots of other choices.

As for the Cayenne, I'm curious how much extra you have to pay for the nice interior. Everything is optional in a Porsche -- I've always said, if they could charge you for the air in the tires, they would. A loaded X5 35i is around $60k with everything I could want on it, including several things you can't get on the Cayenne for any price (like the TopView system). And the nav system is better in the BMW. It might not be as rich as the Cayenne interior but I happen to like the X5 interior quite a bit, and since I've had BMW's for years I am familiar with how everything works. It feels exceptionally powerful (the X5 35i is closer in performance to the Cayenne S than the base Cayenne is to the X5 35i), and gets great mileage, too. And again, it's for the wife -- she wouldn't be towing anything or tracking it, and better not be off roading, so I'd be hardpressed to pay a bunch extra for a slower, thirstier, and (except for the front end) uglier Cayenne. But I will check it out later this year. You never know, she might fall in love with it. I got her a decked out Touareg when those first came out for that very reason, and despite it being an absolute lemon she still misses that thing to this day. In fact the reason we didn't get a Cayenne at that time was the Touareg was actually nicer inside. Now that they fixed the interior, I imagine she'd like the Touareg's nicer, sportier big brother. So we shall see.

It all comes down to Porsche's prestige and racing heriatage isn't it? :)

You've forgotten the incredible weight reduction on the Cayenne.

You all know, I thought the last one AND Touareg sucked and were sloppy fatties.

The new one will make you a believer.

DO NOT but without driving them.

Then at least you know for sure in your mind you made the right decision for yourself.

And look out if they bring the Diesel here. AMAZING.

Can't believe they will bring a Hybrid in before the clean diesel.

Personally, I think it's a mistake.

Seriously, 011. Do you really have to show us the food?! If those were provided by Porsche, it's already bad enough that we're always missing out on these press meetings. We know you get well treated, but then you have to show us all these pictures to... what? why? aha

I've seen a lot of Panameras. The fact that it isn't obviously attractive turns me away. And the Cayenne: it's interesting how I never imagine seeing a VW Touareg despite their similarities.

Some people complain about the center console being too distracting, but I think it's what the young-minded part of many us want in the "ultimate driving machine." It's so "COOL"!

I'm sure the performance is good. The stats comparing the old and new Cayenne are impressive. The Panamera... I don't know... critics always say, "This Panamera feels pretty agile... for its size."

WorldofLuxury.

AutoSpies.com attracts the highest income demographic on the net and those in that strata enjoy life experiences, not just material goods.

Many people many never get to the destinations we luckily get to visit but they love seeing other parts of the world, the people that live there and how they live as well.

Just look at the amount of views those photos get in our galleries as a testimony to that.

As true to the '00' moniker, the agents and may readers are just as obsessed with fine living as they are with cars.

Cayenne is cash money. The X5 is its only competitor in the looks department.

Has anybody seen the power folding tow bar? Fierce....

How can you compare the sixes in the Cayenne to the one in BMW's X5/X6 the X6 has performance times very close to that of the 400hp cayenne s the 6 cylinder cayenne is no match from a performance stand point, its more the car you buy if you have to have a cayenne and cant afford the extra $20,000 for an S or just have a Cayenne that doesnt burn as much fuel i guess otherwise other than the badge why would you buy it over the competition even the 300hp MDX which gets ranked highly in most reviews has better performance numbers than this "Porsche tuned" Toureg oh well badge whores rejoice...

In X5/X6 there is no such option like Top View!!! The price for options in BMW is like in Porsche. There a lot of options in Porsche that cannot be ordered in any price in BMW.

You are wrong, there is a TopView option on the X5 and X6. In fact it's also available on the 5-series and 7-series.

001, I very much enjoy your website and have always appreciated the detail you have brought in your reporting. But not this time. I feel you have played too fast and lose with your figures and I am disappointed. I have just configured a 2011 Panamera V6 with only what I view as the absolute minimum necessary options to make a car in this price class work -- 19 inch wheels (and the least expensive option of the 19s at that) lest this car look like the rental car version, park assist with rear view camera (because you can't see out the back), heated front seats and 6 disc changer -- and that was it and the car priced out at $80,520 on the Porsche USA site. A very well equipped BMW 535i comes in at around $62k. A very well equipped 550i or E550 comes in at $72K. At $80,520, the Panamera is significantly more expensive then a loaded 550i or E550. Add a few more options to the V6 Panamera and you get dangerously close to E63 territory - which in my humble opinion is in a whole different class than the V6 Panamera.

So I think the real comparison should be between a well equipped V8 BMW or Mercedes and this lightly equipped V6 Panamera or between a well equipped V6 Panamera and an E63 Which would you choose . . . I would choose the BMW/Mercedes in each case.

Thanks

@SouthOcean1 -- I just priced out a V6 Cayenne with the options you mentioned and came out at $56,195. I think you must have priced out the V8 Cayenne S to get up to 80k.

Agent 001: did you try the V6 Cayenne with the manual transmission?
