More Trust Issues? Toyota Admits It Sat On Latest Lexus Motor Recall For Over Two Years!
Toyota knew two years ago about the engine problem behind its latest Lexus recall, even changing the spring part to correct it, but did not think a recall was warranted until recently, a company official said today.

Toyota Motor Corp. started Monday a global recall over engine defects in its Lexus luxury models sold around the world, as well as the Crown sold in Japan, moving to repair some 270,000 vehicles to replace valve springs -- crucial engine components that are flawed and could cause vehicles to stall.

In August 2008, Toyota changed that spring part, making it thicker, to prevent the problem, spokesman Hideaki Homma told The Associated Press. That is why the latest recall does not affect vehicles produced after August 2008.

This is just another of the many "Wins for Toyota — Safety Group." If you recall, the uncovered documents that cite millions of dollars in other savings by delaying safety regulations, avoiding defect investigations and slowing down other industry requirements. Bravo Toyota! Saving the big MONEY!

Well we do need to remember Akido Toyoda was NOT in power at the time. The board ousted him to make more profit which started this whole chain of events.

The man has inherited a PR nightmare of lies, half truths and questionable actions. Honestly if he can live through this firestorm, Toyota will be in a better place.

My only regret is that numerous sources (us included) pointed out the issues and predicted that the myth would come down around them. Only AFTER the walls started to crumble did they realize what they had done.

I'll say this again. I LIKED Toyota in the 80's, they started losing me in the 90's and by 2000 I knew they were taking shortcuts for profit. The Lexus models I owned at that time were prime examples why I would not return to the brand.

What makes them different from the other big Automakers????? I tell you the difference, Toyota has built more reliable cars over a longer period of time than the Big 3 can shake a stick at. No surprises here.

The bigger you get, the more crap slips through the cracks!

r_driver04 - Yes they have made more reliable cars for a longer time, I agree. But they took a ride down a slippery slope and will they get back up to the top?

Akido is a man of character, and one that is sorely needed, however can one man undo the damage that profiteers took? That remains to be seen. Steve Jobs did it with Apple, but I don't know enough about Mr Toyoda to judge. Right now I am not seeing a true visionary, but then again I don't see what is going on inside of Toyota.

I don't think they sat on it; they were trying to cover it up!

Well I gave them a year to gather enough information.

The first report was 2007, but no one in their right ind will issue a recall over a few issues. However after about a year of gathering information there should have been trend and then the possibly a recall.

I know other sights are reporting three years but that is from the original report and Toyota should be given the benefit of the doubt.

Any way you slice it right now is simply took way too long to surface.

I don't remember having any issues with my LS460 but it's on the way out of my garage anyways. Now I want to get rid of it before there's recalls on my Lexus.

So you can buy something else with a recall on it? I'm just sayin....

Cars are funny things. My neighbor a few doors down has both a LS460 and a Range Rover.

Loves them both the same and rates them equally as far as problems go. He is totally unaware of what JD Power says about quality and reliability and seems to not be concerned.

However if I asked our readers for an opinion, the Range Rover would probably be deemed as a lemon and the LS a dream before the end of the day.

Of course your mileage may vary, but I think a lot is what you expect and what you get that determines the experience not some chart.

How do we know if other companies are not "covering-up" the potential recall issues?? I have BMW and had problems here and there, to the point where transmission had to be replaced. I know many others have similar issues and nothing is happening. No recall does not mean they are all good.

Simple...You don't

I would wager they ALL do this to a degree. Toyota just got caught and is under the microscope. You would expect this of GM and Ford, but many did not of Toyota.

So this is the pursuit of perfection? Oh wait, the pusuit of the impossible! How about the pursuit of the truth and stop calling them "Lexus" and just call them Toyota's which they really are.

Ford never went bankrupt, Diamler caused Chryslers bankruptcy and GM even though had a few years of trying to turn in the right direction, didn't have enough time. Americans are to smart to believe the spin that you put on it Badge.

They did not sit on it, they investigated it, fixed the customer cars that had the problems, fixed their manufacturing end to ensure higher quality, and when they felt the number of complaints warranted a recall , they recalled it! Customers did not get shafted as drivetrain warranty is 4 year. Period.
Lexus is known to take care of its customers !! ask any one and every one of them
Why do people like to draw an analogy between a mediocre archaic manufacturer like GM and the likes of Toyota ?
I can understand the hate of the xenophobic illiterate lot as they don't know better, but shouldn't we applaud Toyota for being forthright and fixing problems in a straightforward manner ?
