Report: Volkswagen’s new plan is to build bigger but cheaper cars
Volkswagen AG’s replacement for the Passat is a mid-sized sedan that’s bigger and more affordable. This replacement will be produced in Chattanooga, Tenn., and is made to rival the mid-sized segment forerunners: the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Ford Fusion.

The Tennessee plant that’s currently being constructed can build up to 150,000 units annually. Last year, VW was only able to sell 11,138 Passats.

We'll see. Anybody who has seen it fit to decide to be the number one car-maker in the world has been subsequently plagued by recalls and falls from grace. Witness GM, then immediately after, Toyota.

That trend is going the other way. Look at GM being the first to build a compact car in the US, and Fords Fusion being one it's top sellers.
