Bmw betting on carbon fiber used in Formula 1
In BMW AG’s battery-powered city car, the same lightweight material used to protect Formula One drivers will be used for the passenger-safety cell.

BMW regards this fabric to be used on the small electric vehicle to be the auto industry’s biggest bet so far on carbon fiber. Klaus Draeger, BMW’s development chief, said that combining carbon fiber and aluminum will offset up to 772 pounds of added weight from battery and electronic components.

That will be a big improvement if it is incorporated to the whole BMW line and they will be able to keep the weight down...but at higher prices....but I bet every customer looking for security will be willing to pay.

I like that BMW is doing this since lighter weight (yet stronger) cars are needed and appreciated. I do however find it ironic that the year BMW pulls out of Formula 1 saying that it was not relevant to their business, they announce a passenger car with Formula 1 technology. Looks like not everyone in BMWs P.R. department got the earlier memo.

Actually the official statement didn't talk about relevance:

"Of course, this was a difficult decision for us. But it’s a resolute step in view of our company’s strategic realignment,” explained Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. In line with our Strategy Number ONE, we are continually reviewing all projects and initiatives to check them for future viability and sustainability. Our Formula One campaign is thus less a key promoter for us. Mario Theissen has been in charge of our motor sports program since 1999. We have scored a large number of successes in this period, including some in Formula One racing. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mario Theissen and his team for this,” said Reithofer.
