I disagree- the E39 M5 was THE legend and also basically started the HP wars back in 98'.

The last M5 was a disappointment to many people. It's bangled looks were suspect, the V10 needed more torque and so many were made that many people feel it diluted the brand.

I happen to disagree totally because the E60 is the most Iconic M5 they have made....IMO....reason being it has the first ever V10 in a BMW secondly the M-Division didnt take the standard V8 and try to squeeze some extra horses out of it (as the E39 did) and third the Bangle styling will always be controversal compared to the blandness of the E39 and now the new 5 series. I think this M5 was the best M5 yet and to have an engine built specifically for a street race car I think that is BIG compared to just using what you got and not offering any exclusivity to the customer.....as far as the styling goes I love it like I always said Bangle worked wonders for BMW changing the ordinary blandness to something aggressive yet very sexy like the E60 M5 and 5 series(with the sport M package) but again it all comes down to preference when you really think about it. and as many E60's I see on the road everyday people preferred it very much.

Bond,

By just looking at the torque numbers, I claimed the same thing until I drove in it, which I assume you didn't, because the way that engine builds its power is beyond amazing and pure art.

E39 was the best looking M5 hands down. It's a true classic.

NO!!! Naturally-aspirated V10 in a sedan no more... there goes the bragging rights; there goes the excitement.

As much of an icon as it may be, my friend who has the V10 M5 hates the inconvenience of filling up at the gas station every 4 days (sometimes 3). I think he gets MPG in the single digits, it's so bad. Hey, he can afford it, but he doesn't like the inconvenience of it all.

Your friend uses an M5 for daily transportation?

Actually SHOWTIME I have driven it.

That instant snap torque is not there-it needs to be built. Nothing wrong with that either- I was simply stating something I've seen complained about on different M5 boards. The V10 is awesome, no doubt. But for my preference I prefer the E39 M5. I believe it's a more timeless design and will endure better among enthusiasts.

My .02.....
