VIDEO: Consumer Reports Drives The Honda CR-Z, Does It DELIVER?
If there is one car that will be making its debut in 2011 that should be questioned a bit, it is the 2011 Honda CR-Z. Given that the aim of Honda was to make a hybrid with sporting intentions, it would seem that Team Honda was a bit off the mark.

Oh-kay so they threw in a manual transmission. Big deal. That does not make a car sporty. It just makes a slow car annoying to drive.

Having seen some of the initial driving impressions, it does not seem as though Honda has "nailed it."

The latest to weigh in are the guys at Consumer Reports, who recently got its hands on a CR-Z pre-production vehicle.

Just remember, we told you so.

There’s a lot of buzz and anticipation from the media and the public regarding the late summer release of Honda’s latest hybrid, the CR-Z coupe. So, to get an early driving impression, our auto testers borrowed a pre-production car from Honda to put through its paces at our Auto Test Center. But, as you’ll see in the accompanying video, they’re not necessarily buying the hype.

While this hybrid is based on the current four-door Honda Insight, the CR-Z has a shorter wheelbase and styling that is a clear homage to the CR-X, Honda’s eye-catching two-seat coupe that was sold in the U.S. from 1984 through 1991. With the CR-Z, Honda is trying to bear out the notion that sporty and fuel-efficient are not mutually exclusive...

Okay let me get this right,

It's not a very good sporty car.

It's not really that fuel efficient for a hybrid.

So it's a two seat bungled attempt to resurrect the CR-Z (which got better fuel economy)

As I predicted, this car is pointless.

I gather you meant, "So it's a two seat bungled attempt to resurrect the CR-X (which got better fuel economy)"... ?

DOH!

Nostradamus thanks for the correction.

I wasn't expecting this to be a good one, especially after seeing the redesigned 2011 Honda Odyssey unveiled and the Honda Crosstour, Honda's overall design marks have been lowering overall in their new designs, C'mon Honda! What happened to the good old days?!

I remember a long, long time ago Honda's once made hot looking cars that were fun to drive.

What happened?

the days of Honda's dominent engineering prowess and clear design language are now such a distant memory. It's a very sad fall from grace. add in Acura's even more egregous decline, and you have to wonder what is going on over there.

@freeagent

While very true, Honda's cars are still selling well.

Brand has some serious loyalty.

Looks like some of Toyota's bean counters have been moonlighting at Honda. Even the lesser Honda's were fun to drive.

Coming from the reliable sources at Consumer Reports. Say what you want about the vehicle, but when Honda releases a niche vehicle, it always sells. Whether it will be around in 5 years or now, who knows, but people will buy it.

@als723

I would not say that, exactly.

Although the Ridgeline did an alright job the first two years, sales tumbled with the increase of 2008 oil prices...

I disagree.

If the Ridgeline was doing SO well then why has the company decided not to go fwd. with a next generation?

Meanwhile other trucks continue to be built by other manufacturers.

For example, the Ford F-150 recovered in sales QUICKLY after encountering its 2008 dip.

Just leave trucks to the Americans.

The Ridgeline can't toe more then 5000 pounds and struggles with about 3-4000...the engine just was not designed for a truck but rather an accord. Also the Honda 5 speed automatic gearbox is ancient late 1990's design with no hopes of them poaching the 6 spead ones from Acura an time soon...I think Honda has lost their way and down grades Honda's to support the stupid ugly Acura brand that makes just nicer Honda's not top tier 1 luxury cars. Honda bring back a slightly more roomy S2000 and Acura NSX and please make a proper large car to compete with at least the Cadillac XTS coming out.. You refuse to do Rear wheel drive, because I know you are too pig headed to give people what they want, but the customers want a bigger car.

What is wrong with Honda lately , I used to love their designs but now are just so awful looking. I'll put this car just under the Pontiac Aztek in looks. Actually the Aztek served a purpose this one doesn't so the Honda loses.

Honda has been slipping lately, I am a fan and all, right now they are like a sports team that has been way too over confident, now the competition is passing them by, time to crack the whip Honda!

Please add to the debate as to why you support Honda in making this car? I own a civic, I am not a Honda hater, the reason I bought the Honda back in 2007 is because it was the best in safety,performance, and economy. this car is none of this, it might be safe?

No it doesn't because for the money I can get a golf tdi that is faster, more fuel efficient and has back seats. Add free maintenance and I'd buy over this. I watched it on motorweek. 0-60 in 10.0 seconds. Whats sporty about that? the prius blows this away with a nearly 2 second better 0-60 time. If this thing could at least get 0-60 in 7 seconds or less and get the same fuel economy I would be interested. Otherwise the Golf TDI or even more so the eco roadster would be way more fun and more fuel efficient at the same time.
