Seeing an article on the web about a possible Mercedes-Benz V8 diesel drop made us wonder if this could be true and we decided to contact our Stuttgart-based source who knows almost everything about the German manufacturer.

The answer came quickly: it is true, Mercedes-Benz will drop its 4.0-liter V8 diesel engine in favor of a smaller V6. Apparently, this move will be made in order to chase its competitors such as Bmw, who uses in its diesel-powered vehicles a 3.0-liter V6

That makes sense. I don't see the need for a V8 diesel in a car because we aren't using them to haul loads or pull tree stumps out the ground. I frankly don't see the need for a diesel with more than 4 cylinders and with more than 2.5L displacement in a car anyway. VW's 2.0L twin turbo diesel puts out just a shade less torque than the 4.8L Vortec gasoline V8 offered in the Chevy Silverado.
