The 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe JUST Hit Showroom Floors, Should The Competition Be Checking Its Mirror?

The 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe JUST Hit Showroom Floors, Should The Competition Be Checking Its Mirror?
In the past several years, the competition in the automotive world has been heating up. For example, we see that Audi is eating just about all of the available market share and brands like Cadillac getting a boost of energy, thanks to the Escalade and CTS.

Which brings us neatly to the topic of discussion, the new CTS and CTS-V Coupe. Thanks to our friends at the dealer, we now know that the CTS Coupe has officially begun arriving at your local showroom.

Does this car have enough to have you slither away from your Audi, BMW, Infinti, Lexus or Mercedes-Benz?

With a the CTS Coupe's base price of $38,990, it certainly is priced competitively but judging from the vehicles we have seen, it is not a profound departure from the sedan. In fact, it appears to be pretty much spot on with a CTS Sedan except it lacks two doors.

Without question it is a stylin' piece of metal, but besides that, what makes you yearn for the CTS?

Do you foresee many A5, 3-Series, G37, IS or C/E-Class buyers making a switch over to Cadillac?

What say you, SPIES?

Listen to what the first reports are saying:

"Considering the excitement generated by the car’s exterior, it’s a bit of a letdown to find the cabin pretty much carries over unchanged from the sedan and wagon. Though the CTS interior was a breakthrough for General Motors when it debuted nearly three years ago and still has very few overt faults, the addition of a significant new body style halfway through a model cycle would seemingly have been the perfect time to introduce some updates. Instead, the only real change of note is the availability of Recaro seats from the CTS-V in any coupe or sedan..."

"Sure, Cadillac wants to be perceived as the equal to a BMW or Mercedes, and clearly this Coupe could do more to flatter the driver around tight roads. But the CTS-V Coupe is being launched later this summer, and its extra 250-odd horsepower and adaptive suspension should fulfill the performance promise of a range-topping luxury coupe. Meanwhile, the standard CTS Coupe is available at a base $38,990, with prices ranging to our loaded tester’s $51,825. Like the Buick Regal we tested recently, the CTS Coupe shows GM’s new approach to luxury: Ride and handling that are refined for commuting duty yet up for some occasional fun, wrapped in a distinctively-styled, modern body..."

"The CTS-V coupe drives almost exactly like a CTS-V sedan...What does that mean? This is what everyone else will tell you: Taut, compliant suspension. Steering that feels a bit heavy and numb on center but is surprisingly tactile and communicative..."

If the sedan version of the latest CTS was able to be compared to cars like the M5 or E63.... well the CTS-V version then I must say that Cadillac has been seriously reevaluating their quality and management and feels like coming back to the true luxury comparison.... otherwise I still remember those crappy 1980 cimarrons?... yea we dont need that.. lol

You guys are really smitten with this Caddy's Veg-o-Matic styling. I can't stand it because the car is so outdated looking its not funny. How GM still puts cheap interiors in their cars is beyond me.

Agreed. Launch control could just be a little mirror that drops down from the back so it tries to run away from itself.

I actually am a fan of this car. The performance is great. However, the look is getting pretty stale for me and Tango is spot on about the interior.

I think the interior will have to wait until an across-the-line change can be made. If they went ahead and changed the interior on this car alone, then the cost can't otherwise be easily recovered and then have the price of the car not be affected. Journalists who get paid to critique cars should know this and not make stupid bitchy complaints.

@Tango

Although your point is well taken you have to remember, as Automobile pointed out, this product IS midway through its life cycle.

AND, since it is a coupe there should be some differentiation in some form or fashion, as in the E-Class sedan and coupe.

This Caddy will sit and rot in the Caddy showroom. Anyone buying a Lexus, Infiniti, BMW or Mercedes will not consider this hack.

Seeing as how the CTS outsells the IS, ES, TL, and G-Sedan... I'd say the competition is paying attention.

no the CTS is a competitor to the smaller cars its just sized larger much like the TL, or ES. Maybe the next generation will move upmarket in price and content but thats not where it is right now. Secondly the E class coupe doesnt compete with the 6 series it like the CLK competes is somewhere between a 3 series coupe and a 6 series so thats not really logic to say a car thats some 10-20,000 less than the 6 series competes with it that would also make it a XK competitor......try that logic one more time lol

Well, this is where things get hairy. The CTS technically is not exactly an entry-level luxury vehicle BUT with most cars pricing raising it has become a competitor. Essentially, the car is straddling a fine line.

BUT, you can also make the argument that the foreign car buyers will not cross shop an American vehicle with a German/Japanese auto.

Additionally, people usually do not shop classes because at the end of the day it is about price.

Something tells me no one says "Ah, man! I REALLY want this Honda Civic, but it is a C-segment car. Damn!"

People generally have an idea of what they're going to spend and look around that region. Considering the CTS Coupe's base price will be approx. $39k, I think a wise and open-minded buyer give the CTS a shot since it is a unique piece.

Base prices for the others: Audi A5 -- $36,000; BMW 328i -- $36,200; Infiniti G37 $36,050

No first off the STS competes with the E class, 5 series, and GS but of course poster that swears hes right wont agree with facts. The c class coupe like the last model will be aimed at the 1 series, the new E class coupe is essentially the same concept as the CLK its naming conventions just changed as it still isnt a true E class coupe hence its 3 series coupe size and CLK pricing. The 6 series is priced and aimed above the 5 series. BUt as ignorrant as these comments are its clear anything remotely close to FACTS will be lost here....lol @ name calling so childish.....yet proving my point

Pretty decent car all around. However, if I was shopping in this category, I would go with the G37 or 3 series.

Cadillac is definitely on a good come back trail . Its brand value has still to catch up though . That will take time and effort. But nice cars.
They still have a ways to go before defining a segment busting vehicle
i.e. BMW 3, M series , Lexus RX, ES and Hybrids, MB S, CLS, SL series, etc
But definitely the most relevant american brand after Chevy, Ford

I dont know about the 6 series being an E class competitor or who this CTS coupe's competition is for sure but what I DO know for sure is that everyone keeps putting the CTS line against the C-class, 3 series, or G when they are NO LONGER its competition. Cadillac may have been a bit off with the first generation CTS but it clearly set the second generation as a 5 series competitor. Cadillac was a bit off when the first art & science CTS/STS first debuted. The STS was suppose to go after the 5 and E but it failed, somewhat. Its just like the three letter model names. They use to be an acronym but now its just a naming strategy. Cadillac is slowly ironing things out and everyone will not be up in the air about this. The ATS should help you mag editors and whomever else is still confused...
