New Volkswagen New Beetle Coming in 2011
The original Volkswagen Beetle set all records for longetivity with its 65 year production run. Its spiritual sucessor, the New Beetle, while unable to top the Beetle's long production cycle has itself been on sale for a dozen years, an incredibly long production cycle in current times. Aside from a mild refresh in 2006 the New Beetle is one of the oldest cars on sale today. However, this will all change as Volkswagen has confirmed that the next generation of the New Beetle will go on sale in 2011 ready to battle with other retro inspired cars such as the Mini and the Fiat 500. The question is, will the new New Beetle capture the public's attention like the original did in 1998?

I hold my opinion till I see the car. If it's more akin in styling with the 500 I'll say dud, otherwise, if it's a strong mini competitor I'll say stud!

I was actually hoping that perhaps they would have used a Porsche-derived chassis to develop this car. It's more expensive than a Golf anwyay, so it might as well have the performance to go with the higher price.

The Boxster is more than double the price, so it would be too expensive. There was a lot of talk about making it rear engine and rear drive based on VW's small city car platform, but that one was changed to front engine. The only other more sporting platform is the mid engined one for the VW Bluesport, but that would make it unpractical.

The reason the old bug was so popular is because of the rear engine rear drive, enthusiasts could customize the bug to become a 1/4 mile racer to a Baja champ, and a street racer, what other car today lays that claim? This new car may be nice but it will never please so many diverse enthusiasts and still be economical.

It was also air-cooled, which made the engine much more reliable for things like that.

This is from my first ever post about rear engine Vw's. I'm re-posting it and will probably catch some flack but who cares.

You know what kills me. We all like the old style bug for it's versatility. The designers of the new beetle listened to the wrong crowd (Hippies) when developing the new beetle. How about an AWD or RWD beetle with removable fenders and suspension options so we can make roadsters or BAJA style beetles. If rear engine makes it complicated then make it front engine. Personally the two people in the front are the only ones that matter when it comes to the fun factor. I don't have a problem with the Hippies, but let VW make them a veggie oil burning bus and a Beetle with a bike and surf board rack on top and let the tuners have at it. Versatility means the ability to Chop.

enforcement, why do you think it would be hard for vw to make it safe? I am more puzzled as to how they couldn't make it safe.
