More revolutionary than the Prius hybrid engine?

Following its TDI and FSI engines, Volkswagen is launching TSI petrol technology, which uses direct injection plus dual-charging through a combination of an engine-driven supercharger and an exhaust gas turbocharger arranged in series.

VW says the driving characteristics of the new TSI engine are improved over those of the current FSI unit, with no turbo lag and high maximum torque. The belt-driven supercharger operates at lower engine speeds, with the turbocharger coming in as the engine speed increases.

The new TSI engine has a capacity of 1.4 litres (1,390 cc) and produces either 140 or 170 PS. The 170 PS version has the same peak power as a conventional 2.3-litre petrol unit but with 20% lower fuel consumption, returning 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle. It produces torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) from 1,750 through to 4,500 rpm.

This is amazing technology and I'm a little surprised Japanese automakers didn't come up with it sooner. Toyota has utilized both means of boost, supercharging the MR2 and turbocharging the Supra and Celica. I'm all for a 170hp 4cyl that gets almost 40mpg. Eaton Corp is the company that partnered with Volkswagen to come up with the dual design and I hope it comes to the U.S.

Go figure 38.2 mpg for VW and the Prius get 60 mpg in the city and 51 mpg in the highway, so the Prius still get more mpg. Sooner or later Toyota will put VW out of business like they did to vechicle here in the U.S. Japanese Auto is taking over, and that right, and stop your crying and complain why Toyota is number #1 in the Worlds.

The Germans are way ahead with their engineering. They are making huge progress with fuel cells, hydrogen, lithium cars and if they decide to go hybrid it will be mated to high tech Blutec diesels.

"Those who buy petrol-electric hybrid cars for their green credentials as well as their fuel economy may be misguided, according to a two-year American study.

CNW Marketing Research, of Bandon, Oregon, says that hybrids have a greater "whole of life" impact on the environment than conventional cars.

The study revealed that recycling of batteries and electric motors created a higher energy cost for every mile driven.

The most "energy expensive" vehicle from 2005 was the Maybach at $11.58 a mile, VW Phaeton at $11.213 and Rolls-Royce Phantom at $10.660.

The industry average of 312 vehicles was $2.281, yet all the hybrids cost more.

Toyota Prius rated $3.249 and Honda Civic hybrid $3.238, costing more than a full-size SUV Land Rover Discovery ($2.525) or Toyota Camry ($1.954)."


Pretty nice technology ha? The Prius will end up harming the environment more than a full size SUV.
The LS600h will make the Maybach look like a zero emission vehicle.

Diesels are slow? You need to get out of the 80s and join us in the new century. E320 CDI does 0-60 in 6.3-6.6 sec and could probably reach 500k miles without missing a beat.

I'll take a Bluetec Diesel over this junk technology any day of the week.

What the hell are you talking about? What spin?

Join us back on earth would you? I don't think you even understand the article.

With our present technology the Hybrids will end up polluting the environment more than conventional cars because of the disposal and production process. Production because of lighter weight materials and complexity of the power package.
Don't you think we should find a solution for the production and disposal before we start mass producing this junk or maybe we should just be irresponsible and let the future generation worry about it?

Do you see the part that says ENVIROMENTAL IMAPCT?
It means that whether the pollution comes from the production and disposal it's the same as if it came out of the tailpipe. WITH CURRENT TECHNOLOGY HYBRIDS WILL DO MORE HARM TO THE ENVIRONEMNT THAN CONVENTIONAL CARS. DO YOU GET IT??

You still don't get it.

Have you considered how much energy is used to produce a Hybrid? Unless the factories are powered my fuel cells you still get polluted air.

With today's technology Hybrids don't make any sense.

Of course we need to start somewhere, but his technology should not be mass produced. People are getting tricked into buying them because they think they are good for the environment. This is a bunch of BS. It shows that you can pretty much sell anything with good marketing.

Diesels don't use a bunch of batteries. The point that I'm trying to make is that this technology should be in testing and not mass produced. Because the stuff that is out there right now has (production) and will (disposal) create more pollution than any conventional gas or diesel car.

I have no doubt that this technology will improve. In 10 years they will probably have a more efficient way of producing and disposing. If the current ones can last 8-10 years disposal might not even be an issue.

However, with the current technology none of this is efficient. It takes a lot more energy (pollution) to produce a hybrid than it does to produce a conventional car.

Hybrids should be tested more and not mass produced for people that think they are environmentally friendly.

Most hybrid owners buy these cars because they truly believe that they are good for the environment. I don't think many are buying it for the money that they will save at the gas station.

the only reason anyone even dares say that the europeans can not compete making modern engines would be, i presume, that they don't know **** about engine technology (BMW850) give me one not european engine that even approaches european technology then try to tell me why german engines (BMW escially) keep winning awards all year round! besides, for information, the technologies used in a japanese hybrid where pioneered by germans and french, even if not for the same purpose,--- google venturi fetish and u'll know how far ahead the french are with electrical engines --- finally, i read an article by an americain auto journalist that said the USA is 3rd world compared to europe when it comes to making cars
