Unless I'm mistaken, isn't the Euro5 standard stringent enough for 49 states? I thought that was the problem with the E320 CDI when it came out, it met Euro5 standards but wasn't certified in California, so was sold everywhere else but there.

Assuming that is the case, what is preventing them from selling it in 49 states here, or has the rest of the country now matched California's standards?

@ BSBB: LMFAO! You're gonna have to add Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington to that list. They all have California emissions as their own. Wasn't there some hubbub about states making their own emissions laws outside of Federal law? Whatever happened to that? All these state emissions laws make it very hard/expensive on manufacturers to comply. And my question is this, what happens when soembody from VA drives to PA. What then? Will the Jetta TDI be seized at the border?
