Mercedes Working On Nine-Speed Automatic

Mercedes Working On Nine-Speed Automatic
According to senior engineering sources from Daimler, the new 9-speed automatic will be introduced on large-capacity engines. The 9-speed transmission is reported to have huge improvements in fuel-economy and CO2 emissions.

According to those same sources, the new slush-box will be used on large displacement engines, meaning that it ...

9 Spd? That's it? Bicycles come with 26-spd!

aha

I didn't read the article, so I assume this isn't like that one GM article about a nine speed with 8 forward and 1 reverse.

When the Gillette Mach 3 came out the razor world came to a dead stop. You'd never need more than 3 blades. But oh no, then is was 4. Then 5. Now my razor has 6 blades, and sucks more than ever because of the blade spacing. Clearly excess has it's limits.

You should read the Onion article: http://www.theonion.com/articles/fuck-everything-were-doing-five-blades,11056/

holmstar...that was an awesome post. Really. Who needs more than what is reasonable and efficient.

I still think the Mach 3 is still the best razor ever with the Schick Extreme 3 disposable a very close second.

It will have a good economy...clearly is oriented to get more range.

When will it end. 8 is enough

Offer a 6spd manual and call it a day. Seriously 6 is enough. Engineers get bored and want to add 12 gears to a tranny when they should be focusing on the handling, feel and getting the stability control to fully turn off :(

This is getting ridiculous. When you have that many gears, you might as well call it continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Oh come on ladies, stop bickering about this. Let them do it and see how it works. No one's complaining they were the first to implement 3-point seat belts, first to sue sat-nav (which many consumers use today), and others. It will be some time before we see this in any Merc and it will most likely be introduced in the near-flagship or flagship models first.

So...we should expect Lexus to counter with a 10-speed by say....2013? This is getting out of control. I think my 6 speed is enough.

Obviously the goal is to keep the engine RPM low and allow the torque of the big engines to do the work - thus saving fuel compared to higher revving 6,7, or 8 speed gearboxes.

The question is how much benefit in mpg can be gained by the addition of one more gear? I am thinking that my definition of "huge" gains is different that what the 9-speed will actually attain (as compared to a 7 or 8 spd).
