DRIVEN: Does BMW's M3 GTS Have Porsche's 997 GT3 RS Number?

DRIVEN: Does BMW's M3 GTS Have Porsche's 997 GT3 RS Number?
Probably one of the most outrageous creations to roll out of M GmbH is the all-new M3 GTS.

It is not a proper roadgoing M car, as was the E46 CSL, but it seems to be a helluva lot more raw and edgy. Essentially, this is as crazy as it gets when it comes to the M3. Its the priciest and most extreme model, with only 150 to be produced.

With an upgrade in power, bringing in a total of 444-horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque and an overall lighter vehicle brings this into Porsche territory. But its price seems to exceed the boundary. Granted, it is a lot more limited.

Did BMW miss an opportunity to knock down Porsche's door with the M3 GTS by not pricing it more competitively OR is its price justified?

What is it?
A very expensive M3. There’s no official number from BMW UK because the 10 cars due to land here won’t arrive until next year and the 20% VAT rate will then be in place. But we know it’ll be £100k plus. It’s more of a track
car than the iconic E46 CSL. The half-cage is standard as are the Pirelli P-Zero Corsas. There’s no manual gearbox option and there will only be 150 built.

Technical highlights

The motor is now 362cc bigger, bringing an extra 30bhp and 30lb ft (outputs are now 444bhp and 325lb ft, the latter delivered earlier in the rev range than before). Perspex side and rear glass, no rear seats, lightweight door cards and a minimalist centre console save 75kg over the standard car. The gearbox is BMW’s seven-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission), which is engineered by Getrag.

What’s it like?

Around the Ascari track in Spain, fast, very fast. There were standard E92 M3 Competitions to drive for comparison purposes and the GT3, predictably, monsters them. It doesn’t feel its 1530kg in direction changes, which is testament to the chassis changes which include a solid mounted rear subframe and adjustable dampers. Straight-line speed is impressive, BMW claims 0-62mph in 4.4sec and 190mph flat out. The noise is naughty...

Just finished reading the article and as much as I love the look and performance of the M3, basically, it's still an M3 and the price tag just doesn't justify. For that price, I'd pick the Porsche over the M3 any day of the year. That is, of course, if I was a rich oil man or something, I'd pick one up, anyways. Haha.

Kind of irrelevant, it's interesting to know how it handles, but I recall reading that it was now sold out.

They can price it whatever they want since they're only selling so few. Just like Lexus LF-A. I'm not saying it isn't worth the money but anything under 500 units they'll sell no problem as long as it's good enough.

I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but that's Audi R8 territory in terms of pricing. No matter how customized or how special you make the M3, at the end of the day, it's still an M3. The Audi is something more special.

An Orange M3 with a huge wing for over a 100k? No thanks.

BMW missed out big time not making an E92CSL. Instead we get a Baskin Robbins "Frozen Gray" M3 priced way more than should be and a burnt orange GTS that belongs on XBOX-360.

Can BMW miss the mark any more than it already is?

Badgewhore, I try really hard to understand you but you are a complete fool.

How are you going to compare an updated 370Z to previous generations 10-18 year old M3s? Do you lack common sense?

Also, those stiff shocks and springs u mentioned on the M3s really seem to offer a wonderfully balanced ride and superior handling to every car in its class :)

370Z destroys Cayman? Def not the Caymans S...I don't even think it can destroy the regular Cayman on the track.

The latest review in "Evo" with Chris Harris states that as good as the M3 GTs is it does not have the steering feel or the cornering power of the GT3RS. But it does have usable rear seats.

"The performance of a Porsche Cayman S for half the money."...You need to get this in your head. Porsche and other high end vehicles are not for me and u who try to get the most for their money. I'd take a Porsche any day over a Nissan and many others if it was given to me for free or if I was rich.

"I said 370Z beat all none e90 M3. That means M3 from 18 yrs ago to just a few years ago(e46 M3). But if want an older car, how about a 17yr old Twin turbo Supra vs all none e90 M3? Supra wins!"

U need to go by first year production date if you want to be in any sense fair...and what about the 17 yr old supra? performance wise it isn't better than E46 M3 so what's ur point? why do u even need to make this comparison? what the hell does this have to do with 370Z now?

"M3s only competition is the IS-F. That's like saying you're #1 when they're are only 2 player. They are both practically equal in all performance with the Lexus being a bit less stable over bumps due to the lowered suspension that gives up some travel. M3 is NOT SUPERIOR to it's competition cause IS-F has stiff shocks and springs too and both cars ride equally crappy."

Hey monkey brain, u just admitted lexus being a bit less stable over bumps and has less travel on suspension...so how can the Lexus still ride equally crappy? U actually just brought up the entire point of the M3. It is so well engineered that it doesn't need as stiff suspension as its competitors, yet still beats all of them around any track. That's what makes the M3 brilliant and on top of the game!
