When will the madness stop? Toyota Faces Criminal Investigation Over Steering Rods

Toyota has confirmed that it is the subject of a criminal investigation by a federal grand jury in New York, which has subpoenaed documents about possible steering rod defects.
Car company waited a year to issue U.S. recall over defective steering rods.

Toyota spokeswoman Celeste Migliore said a subpoena was issued on June 29 for documents "related to defective, broken and/or fractured steering relay rods." "[Toyota Motor Corp.] and its subsidiaries intend to cooperate with the investigation," said Migliore, "and are currently preparing their response."

The criminal probe follows an ABC News report that Toyota waited almost a year to recall vehicles in the U.S. with defective steering rods, despite issuing a similar recall in Japan in October 2004. Spurred in part by an inquiry by ABC over the issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also conducting its own inquiry, reviewing new information suggesting that Toyota knew of complaints over breaking steering rods in the U.S. prior to 2004.

The new cases emerged during a lawsuit filed against Toyota by the family of 18-year-old Levi Stewart of Fairfield Idaho, who was killed when his Toyota truck rolled over. Stewart's family blamed the crash on a defective steering rod and says the accident could have been prevented if Toyota had issued the recall in a timely manner.

I wonder why UAW_LAX only posts recall stories about certain companies and trashes the same ones too. I would think that if he were a rational and unbiased person, he would not do so. But then again, whoever said the UAW was rational? I guess that he's just blinded by hate.

I don't think I've ever met a rational unbiased person, and I don't think I'd much enjoy their company... they sound like they would be rather boring and lacking opinions on anything.

lol badgewhore, at least I'm honest about it. Imagine what that would mean in your case, you would lose Toyota as your favorite brand, you would finally see that in the sea of variables, that all the brands are neck and neck and that to say that any one company is better than another is simply hogwash, since no brand is better in all ways, heck no brand is better than all brands even in most ways.

43LE I want you to name one person who posts on this site who has absolutely no biases. I dare you.

If _43LE and the toyota/lexus badgewhore would actually read the story instead attacking the messenger, they might realize that toyota/lexus recalled the defective steering components SIX YEARS AGO in Japan, but left the rest of us experience impending steering failure on our own. This, in addition to the NUMEROUS and SERIOUS safety problem and honesty problems that have come to light, is serious news and should be very alarming to anyone who is currently relying on toyota/lexus product as transportation for their family. I don't know what other conclusion a rational person can come to other than the people running toyota/lexus are lying, greedy, treacherous, scumbags that should be put in prison and relieved of the billions of dollars they have bilked from trusting consumers.

Why doesn't the "NHTSA" instead focus on maintaining and building better roads across the United States?...I bet that would make the driving a lot safer since I am quite often putting myself at risk with other cars by dodging pot holes all over the place.

NHTSA is pathetic!

If Toyota doesn't like it, they can sell their cars elsewhere. Wait, that's the attitude of China and Japan isn't it? LOL

Deal with it Toyota fanboys. You want to do business in America, then you play the game just like Ford/GM has to play the game in Japan/China.

If they are called to task on something, it should be for turning the Japanese sedan market into a bunch of Buicks.

Kick'em when's he's down! Enjoy while they can, Toyota is not going to roll over and fade into the background. Makes me wonder which is stronger; good engineering or bad publicity.

Pedal Choice Error turns into disaster for all involved- except lawyers and media. What is this? 1986 Audi?

Another reason why the US auto market is becoming less desirable, even US Brands know this.
