SPIED: The F10 M5 OPENS Its Hood For The FIRST Time
Continuing the saga of the F10 M5 slowly unveiling itself, we have new photos showing off the new M's engine bay.

That's right! The hood's up!

Taking a closer, hi-res look at the car reveals details eerily similar to the X5/6M. This is not unexpected given it will utilize the same motor, which will require a lot of cooling because it is a forced induction powerplant.

Here's a detail that may not have been picked up yet. Look at the sixth picture from the bottom and really focus in on the brakes.

Those discs are MASSIVE! Assuming those are 19-inch wheels, the rotors essentially fill up the entire opening.

We bring you the most revealing F10 M5 photos yet. Save for some camouflage tape, the M5 front fascia design can be clearly seen. We last saw the M5's exposed bumper back in May, but not in this detail and not this exposed.

Compared to the standard F10 5-series, the F10 M5 front bumper is clearly more sculpted and angular, and features the trapezoidal design as seen on the current M3. Huge side air inlets flank the center trapezoid grill. The wheels are still the BBS FI wheels we've previously seen, but which are purely for testing. The more recent wheel design we've seen were recently posted, and are closer to the X6M wheels in design...

Can't wait for the showdown between this new M5 and the new E63 with the 5.5L Biturbo AMG. How could you lose between these two choices?

Having bigger rotors in not necessarily a good thing from an engineering standpoint and were added for one of two reasons:
1) This M5 has grown more in weight and needs the bigger rotors to prevent brake fade under repeated braking
2) Aesthetics (for the poseur in us all)
Bigger rotors will not stop you car faster in normal driving situations, but will prevent brake fade under heavy use. Larger rotors weigh more with the a double penalty of being unsprung weight (more angular acceleration to stop - - - just think of trying to stop a gyroscope). Take any heavy sedan out on a heavy braking track for just three hot laps and you'll quickly understand brake fade.
