SHOWDOWN: What coupe is better looking? BMW 3-series or Lexus IS-series

It's time for the Spies to stir the pot again.

Now we've seen the new BMW 3-series coupe and one of our readers (Matt) has mocked up a pretty good rendition of what the Lexus IS coupe will look like...the question that is on everyone's mind is which one is the better looking design?

Take a look at the pics, vote in our survey below and then tell us why you voted the way you did in our blogs.

Fasten your seatbelts!

I agree. It would be a good idea to have the same type of pictures when doing a comparison.

The BMW picture is real. The IS is a photoshopped cartoon. The Lexus is dropped and it has bigger and much sportier wheels.

This is not a fair comparison.

the truth is that the new Bmw is Ugly! It may be a great performer and of course it will provide a more visceral feel when your driving as has usually been the case wih any Bimmer against it's competitor but this BMW is just plain Ugly and there's nothing any of us can do about that and if any one paid attention those are the rims on the IS and the car is actually that close to the ground already

I think spies there is no need for that survey, there is not even a single person on previous 3 series coupe's blogs who was thrilled by the new 3 coupe or 100% liked it.NO ONE NO ONE

But on the other hand there were many,as usuall Lexus fans but also some true and unbiassed car lovers liked the IS and it's Coupe very much.

THe results are clear Lexus more beautiful, powerful, faster
0-62,luxurious,reliable....etc
(A blend of all gooodies)

Conclusion: Lexus won the race, but not with a great margin.(accepted the fact that, IS is still in it's second generation)

JUGNU----->THE CARMAN

This BMW is way better then the IS. The IS looks like a really short car, and the interior quality, ride quality, sportiness, and Heritage cannot match BMW. The IS really sucks. As Nate said, the IS is just a coply of BMW. The only car Lexus ever did right was the GS.

Even Current G35Coupe looks better than these.
looks wise there is no comparison!

The truth is BMW screwed up the look of the most important car for them... the 3-series coupe.

The new 3-series coupe is taught and muscular. It has the typical Teutonic quality associated with the brand, but now encorporates more expressive body sufacing, full of tension yet remaining sleek.

You just know people in design circles will appreciate this car.

It's all too easy to say the G35 looks better, because it offers the traditional coupe profile. Problem is, it breaks no new ground, and isn't as emotive as the BMW. It's a 'seen it all before' type scenario, where they just tweak an existing formula of good proportions but precious little else.

That Lexus photo shop is a joke, the proportions are all wrong, the stubby profile the main bugbear. Again, it's easy to favour the Lexus when you are too conservative to look beyond the basic 'coupe' shape. The Lexus will have it for sure, but the body surfacing is lifeless and unoriginal.

The new BMW 3-series coupe HAS the elegant coupe profile expected of a car in this segment, sweeping bonnet, raised waist-line and wider stance, while also breaking new ground by now relying on conventional body surfacing. The sharp crease which intersects the door handle divides the car into two sections, the taught, muscular creases of the top half of the car, and the linear, curvaceous bottom half, flowing effortlessly into the rear wheel haunches.

It really is a work of art.

Should read:

"While also breaking new ground by NOT relying on conventional body surfacing"

I demand higher resolution pictures than this crap to offer my invaluable opinion! Front, rear and top views too.

While at it, why argue, I'll take all three.

BMW- All the WAY! I'm just loving that 3-Series coupe! And i'm personally not a big fan of the Lexus IS the coupe does look sexy though! But I just love that pic of the front of the Beamer!

Since when did milliseconds in acceleration time make a car better than another?

I am always interested in acceleration figures, but in no way do they represent an advantage over another car.

Aside from torque and horsepower, gearing is the most important factor in acceleration times. I'm sure BMW could get the 330 to go a bit faster to 62 by altering the gearing ratios, but then high-speed cruising ability would be sacrificed.

And when your driving on the autobahn, that just won't do.

First, there is not such thing as an IS350 coupe yet. But even if there were, the 3-series would win, being more elegant and (with the new turbo engine) at least as fast as the IS.

And see if Lexus actually builds a coupe then compare... Now if you wanna compare the new G35 to the BMW I think the sporting G35 is a much better looker than the BMW. As for driving, we will have to wait and see

The germans do not own the copyright and intellectual property to luxury and performance.

When it comes to technology the Japs beat the Germans hands down no contest!

Performance and handling you talk about eg: Ferrari , Lamorghini,Porsche,Subaru etc (real Sports Cars) @ Least they are not pretentious, they trying to be a sports car and a luxury car at the same time they are pure spots cars not BMW.

These things are just selective perception.
Even if you woud put a BMW badge on a shopping trolley, trust me there would be a three month waiting list to get one.

The point is that, how you look at cars is is your perception the Germans are not as superior as you think so can the Japs.

Since the Lexus is a photo shop, I'd have to say the BMW looks better. I'll take this one please.

Hardly ground-breaking.

8-speed transmission? One extra cog and you all go weak at the knees.

Admit it, the new 'innovative' transmission is Lexus' way of trying to get one up over the Germans. Mercedes-Benz launched their 7-speed transmission, so the Lexus marketing department decided the new LS should have an 8-speed, because it would look good in the press release.
