Given The GREEN Light? Looks Like The CLS & Panamera Will Have To Fight Off BMW's 6'er Gran Coupe
It seems that every time BMW shows us a "Concept" it winds up in production within a year or two. The only cars that have not made production are the design studies, which have been yielding reasonably large influences on design.

But here it comes, the 6-Series Gran Coupe.

Initially shown earlier this year, the Gran Coupe will be going toe-to-toe with the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and Porsche's widely acclaimed Panamera.

**Read below for the rumored details from a BMW insider at Bimmerpost

The BMW Gran Coupe has been approved for production, the frameless windows will remain but the car still maintains a B-Pillar for Dynamic finesse.

The BMW Gran Coupe will be marketed as the... BMW 6er Gran Coupe.
Gran Coupe brings a new segment to BMW's portfolio and will spread to include other BMW models in the Future, just like Gran Turismo will.

This will bring a portfolio of three variants to the 6er , Coupe , Gran Coupe and Cabrio.

A Shooting Brake model to accompany the Gran Coupe has been designed and built for design and market evaluation.

The BMW Concept Gran Coupe will make it's European public debut later this year at the Paris Auto Show incidentally alongside another BMW Concept Car that will debut @ Paris.

The visual details of the front and rear of the Gran Coupe will be carried over to the new 6er Coupe.

More details:
  • Launch will be in Summer 2012, suggesting either a Paris 2012 Debut (But Beijing 2012 is not ruled out either)
  • On sale date will be late 2012.
  • Manufactured alongside 6er @ Dingolfling.
  • Design is shared with the new 6er
  • Geneva is out because the F30 3er Sedan and M6 Coupe will debut @ Geneva. The F31 will debut @ Leipzig.
  • Gran Coupe will be available with two Diesels and 2 Petrols. Active Hybrid variant also coming as is the M Gran Coupe.
  • Gran Coupe is lower than the 3,5 and 7 Sedans.
If you look at the sillouhette above the Gran Coupe you can see how they have joined up the raised shoulder-line. It is like this on the new 6er too, it used to be cut over the wheel arch like the Concept CS until Mercedes-Benz brought out the E-Klasse Coupe, although some conspiracy theorists maintain it was altered after Karim Habib departed for Mercedes-Benz since it was intially his vision on the Concept CS...

actually your completley wrong but that is the american way to look at it......but anyway a coupe is actually based on interior volume size not by how many doors the car has. beleive it or not a honda civic is technically a coupe. check the definition of coupe its not based on doors

I dunno, I've heard a definition that states a car that has a B pillar is considered a Sedan, and without is a Coupe, By that definition, the Buick Regal GNX is a pretty bitchin Sedan, and by that definition, should we expect the b-pillar on this bmw to go down with the windows?

Four-door coupé
A sedan with classic coupé-like proportions. The designation was first applied to a low-roof model of the Rover P5 from 1962 until 1973[7], but was revived by the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLS, as well as other models including the 2009 Jaguar XJ[8]. However, the low roof design reduces back seat passenger access and headroom.[9]

Here you are if you want to start quoting the dictionary

Excellent design. It will look like the "concept". It is really the pre-production car, as is BMW AG way of showing a car these days. One concept first and then they tweak it and bring it back as another concept, which is really the car that will be at dealers. And this car did not just get approval.

BMW's generally have a seven year gestation period from the board being pitched the idea and giving approval for production to the car being on sale at a dealership. They need some good looking cars in the line-up.

The concept was pretty nice. Any de-toning might make the production model a bit bland although BMW can fix that by giving the vehicle some shiny paint and making sure that the vehicle is as sleek as possible.

B7FAN - You are actually incorrect. Coupes are technically described by the number of doors or roof height. A four door Civic is in NO WAY considered a coupe...technically or otherwise. A compact sedan...yes.

The Bentley Brooklands Coupe has similar interior dimensions as the Honda Accord 4 door sedan. Based on your logic, that would make the 2 door Bentley a Sedan and not a Coupe. Maybe that will be the next trend...manufacturers will come out with huge bulky 2 door cars and call them 2-Door Sedans.

Although I'm not a big fan of the terminology, it seems that it's here to stay. The designation of Four Door Coupe was first applied to the low-roof model Rover P5 in 1962. Mercedes resurrected the term when they created the CLS.

We must deal with the new car classifications as designs become more creative. Crossovers or CUV's, Four Door Coupes...What about an SUV Sport Coupe or a Crossover Sedan. Just wait.

Marketing... sigh...

Eventually, they're gonna be better off calling things the "beautiful sedan" or the "cute, round station wagon".
