Is Volkswagen Now Planning To Buy Alfa Romeo?
This rumor has been going around for a while, but here is some new fuel for the fire.  The Volkswagen Group’s Chairman Martin Winterkorn has reportedly called Alfa Romeo a “dream brand” for VW.

While Fiat has not publicly said its premium performance brand is for sale, it is easily understood that they could be willing to part with Alfa for the right price. Fiat doesn’t disclose the profit loss for each brand in its group, but industry analysts believe Alfa Romeo has not been making money for many years.  This puts Fiat in a particularly tough spot recently as it sinks money into overhauling Chrysler.

I think Audi has done an Outstanding within the last 5 years are so with bring new and exciting new cars. And buying other company and making profitable, but I think Audi is expanding to quick, I think it might backfire. Just look at Toyota and you know what I mean.

Nevertheless, I love the Audi R8 V8/V10 both coupe and convertible and Audi A5/S5/RS5 coupe. But I think that the Audi are way OVERPRICE when compare to other car in it segment. It competitor offer just as much, if Not Better than Audi cars in term of joy of owning and driving the car.

If FIAT sell Alfa, they should kill Lancia and keep just Ferrari and Maserati. Alfa is profitable and I do not see any reason to be sold to VW.

And why the hell VW need Alfa? Where will they put it?
SEAT and Skoda are under VW,
Audi and Porsche are premium,
Bugatti, Bentley and Lambo are super luxury,
but Alfa is not enough good to be over VW and it's not so bad to be under VW, at the same time is completely different from VW to be at the same level as Volkswagen brand!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I doubt Alfa is profitable. Fiat just returned to profitability after 3 quarters of loss, mostly on the strength of sales of industrial and agricultural products and on small cars (Fiat). Also, I don't think VW has to position Alfa above or below their existing brands as they could position it as an equivalent, but serve different geographical markets.

Alpha is more known in the US than seat or skoda so if Alpha returns to the US it can be profitable for for VW regardless of what Seat or Skoda dose in Europe.

If FIAT ever did end up selling Alfa, then Chrysler would be screwed.

@ Observer: Don't forget their recent acquisition, Suzuki. Did they ever finally buy Ducati or not?

Alfa has not been profitable in years! In fact in general it has been Fiats loss leader. If VW were to buy Alfa I'm sure they would get it for a song. Further VW would have to use there own platforms as Fiat is not about to give up the C Evo platform as it is the small platform for smaller Chrysler and Dodge products. It would give VW a reason to scuttle Seat which has not been making money. Also Walter De Silver who is now at VW was previously at Fiat and Alfa so it would be a natural fit in design. It would be an interesting aquisition for VW.VW's platforms are probably still superior to Fiat's in small car technology. Again it depends how they would market Alfa. Would VW continue the FWD/AWD platform or would it go with RWD. Perhaps with Porsche they could develope a lower cost RWD platform for a 3 series competator on up. The small cars would probably stick with FWD and be on VW platforms, however. Right now I don't see VW buying Alfa just yet.
In a few yrs if Fiat can make Alfa show a profit then perhaps.
