FACT or FICTION: The SPIES Want To Know, Have YOU Been A Victim Of Vehicle Profiling?
After having the chance to drive thousands of miles all over the country, I have started to notice a trend of those who have been pulled over. Usually there is a correlation to time and age, in some cases even the vehicle.

For instance, the story below depicts a reader whose friend was pulled over constantly when he would drive a Volkswagen GTI. Although it can probably be refuted that his friend's change to a Chevrolet Malibu changed his particular driving habits, let's just leave that out of this argument.

In my experience it seems anything with a bright color and a large spoiler, think: Cobalt SS or Mitsubishi Evo, is usually on the side of the road with those oh-so-telling blues and twos flashing.

Is vehicle profiling an issue? If so, do you feel that you have been discriminated? Got a story, tell us down below...

Discuss, Spies...

Q: In Arizona, Mexican Americans are worried about racial profiling. Around the nation, police often 'vehicle profile.' I know a young man whose job puts him on the road at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. Driving a Volkswagen GTI, he was constantly pulled over by police. After he switched to a four-door Chevy Malibu, police stops dropped to zero. Drive a red, sporty something and you are a target. Drive a dark-green Buick sedan, nothing. Shouldn't the vehicle you drive be unrelated to traffic stops?

— R.J. Mullay, Coopersburg

A: It should, R.J., at least in theory. But it would surprise me if police officers could divorce themselves so thoroughly from real-world experience as to achieve absolute objectivity in this application. (Objectivity is a challenge news reporters continually face, and work hard to maintain; see my blog for more on this Hummer of a topic, for which there's not enough room on this road). So I would think there's at least some truth to your charge, even if it springs from a subliminal tendency on the part of officers. Or maybe it's a matter of experience — cops get to the point where they can reasonably suspect at least some measure of trouble, based not on the color of the driver, but on the model (and to some extent the color and other features) of the car. It's not "driving while black," but "driving while your Porsche 911 Carerra is flaming-red metallic....

I'm a 29 year old white male with a short 'crew cut' style haircut, that drives a white 98 Malibu. If I have been profiled it likely wouldn't get me pulled over or searched, more likely I was let go for something that another may have been pulled over for.

I know a girl that was pulled over because she was driving a 2006 dodge charger and the reasoning for the cop to pull her over was because its a drug dealers car.....hmmmmmm.....so i guess cops should be pulling people over in their own dept since its a drug dealers car.....cops make up some of the lamest excuses and then they said her license was suspended and she went to the DMV the next day and her license was fine oh by the way did i mention she is african american thats North Carolina cops for u.....I thought NY was bad and Im from NY so I was used to it but comin out here is even worse.

When I was 20, in 2000, I bought a 1986 Porsche 944 and I<ve been profiled BIG TIME. I had two cars at this time, a 1998 chevy cavalier (woo) and that Porsche. I could drive the chevy for hours without being harrassed, but each time I was driving the Porsche,I was being pulled over in less than 15 minutes.

I feel you. I never get harassed when I am driving the van or the Freestyle, but when I'm in the Mustang, it seems like it only takes a few minutes for the cops to track me down. I don't think its profiling tho. Its more likely due to all the tire smoke.:P

I'm an 18 year old black male with and I get profiled when I drive any nice car at all. In fact earlier this year, I was driving a family friend's SLR McLaren, it didn't end well. I almost was arrested for 'stealing' his car. I can't drive the Cadillac SRX that was gifted to me either because of this. I'm forced to stick to my 1995 Volvo 850 wagon, cause I get pulled over in anything else.

When you get older, the frequent stops will stop.

That sucks, do you listen to angry music and big gold chains? A rapper type or are you more a Will Smith, Tiger Woods type? I couldn't imagine that they would be pulled over much? Then again if there was a white hip hop/rapper type I would imagine that he would be pulled over just as much? I hope that your luck changes, I would also consider a formal complaint against the police if you can't drive your nice car without being harassed.

I always got pulled over in my wrangler. I never get pulled over in my BMW 335i and it has tinted windows and aftermarket wheels.

A few months ago I got pulled over for "speeding". I was in a line of 3 cars, one directly in front of me was a toyota and behind me was a ford, i was in a lexus and he decides to pull me over even though we were all going the same speed, so ya my pay check for those 2 weeks went to my $380 speeding ticket... ugh

For 10 years I owned a 92 honda civic si. I drove the hell out of that car and never got a single ticket in 10 years. Last year I sold the civic and bought a 2005 honda s2000. Within 1 year I have gotten 4 BS moving violations. Cops would literally just follow me around waiting for me to make the smallest mistake. One cop followed me for 5 miles with his headlights off until I exceeded the speed limit by 8 miles an hour on a wide open road then gave me a ticket. It got so bad i just sold the S2000. Good news is now i got an E30 325i and love it. : )

When I was 16 I drove a 1976 Bronco with headers and glass packs, it was also red with big tires, when I would drive down the street kids would plug there ears, I was pulled over all the time, one day I was pulled over 6 times! Every time I did nothing wrong and that day I didn't get one ticket. Some cops have attitude, and just don't drive a car that they can't afford or you will be more likely to get a ticket.Due to the inner politics of most police agencies they stress even the best cops, they in turn have many bad days with shift work that is even harder on there marriages... They also deal with many assholes, so if they are nice you are really lucky. Scientifically red vehicles get more tickets, blue is the best color because it looks slower when speeding down the road.

Do you think my dark blue Shelby GT500 with white racing stripes and killer exhaust gets pulled over more often than others ? You got that right !

Blue vehicles appear to move slower, the white racing stripes scream I have a testosterone vehicle , please ticket me, the loud exhaust doesn't help, even if you aren't going that fast, you can get away with a lot driving a boring car.

@truckman- Yes I am more of the Tiger Woods type. And I have complained to the police department here in Charlotte, NC at least three times.

No disagreement about the gti, however my eye is noticing that older less well kept vehicles (Read Poor) are pulled over far more than newer ones. I don't know why, I suspect that it has to do with legal blow back from that demagraphic, who knows?

When I drive my Benz with the top down in the summer I get it all the time, no matter where I am in the city or in the suburbs where I live. And God forbid I go to the north suburbs of Chicago. I must have just stolen it off the dealer lot. When I drove my old Civic I could do 100mph and nobody would see anything. Same thing with my new Camry, nobody sees that car...not even that dingbat that hit it last month.

Like moths, cops seem to be attracted to lights, chrome and big flashy things(big rims). Bright colors (Red, yellow, Blue) will get you noticed before anybody else. Of course there are exceptions to the rule though.
