KIA To UPSTAGE Volkswagen As King Of Quality -- You Sure About That?

KIA To UPSTAGE Volkswagen As King Of Quality -- You Sure About That?
In a recent story ran abroad, Kia higher ups said that the firm is targeting Volkswagen as a benchmark.

In some respects I can understand that, but in others I can only say what a poor choice; let me explain.

We all know that Volkswagen makes reasonably priced vehicles "for the people," while making them relatively stylish and true to the brand. However, for whatever reason, it is always lacking in terms of reliability and dependability.

Example "A": A 2010 VW Golf press vehicle's DRIVER-side windshield wiper flew off when I turned it on -- as you would in any other car -- during a rainstorm. Have you ever driven leaning over your passenger?

Example "B": Having been the owner of a 2004 VW Touareg, I can confidently say that it was not the most reliable car in any sense of the word. It became downright abysmal at some points. Particularly when it went into "limp mode" approximately 15 miles from my dealership OR maybe when the catalytic converters needed replacing, twice. Have you driven stuck in third gear for 15 miles? It is not fun or safe.

Now, I know what you may be saying. "00R, you just had a couple of bad apples." This brings me to my last example...

Example "C": The 2010 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, which placed VW third from the bottom with 225 problems per 100 vehicles. Not flattering numbers. Meanwhile, Kia sat just below the middle of the pack.

There are only two possible ways that Kia would want to emulate VW:

1) Everytime I drive a VW, issue or not, I step out happy. Hell, sometimes when a wiper falls off I even laugh and find it exciting. Although, it is TREMENDOUSLY annoying when I have to go to its horrendous dealers for service.

2) VWs interiors are class leading. The materials and fit are generally at a much higher level than you would expect. Granted, another recent VW press car showed that quality control standards are lacking -- there was an intriguing, dime-sized bubble in the driver's door door skin.

So, should Kia follow in VW's footsteps? Or, should they just continue on its own trajectory and create its own path of success?

Look out Volkswagen – Kia is out to get you! In an exclusive interview with Auto Express, bosses confirmed that the replacement for the Korean giant’s Rio supermini will aim to match the VW Polo for quality, but with a greater injection of style.

The news came at the UK launch of the new Sportage crossover – the first complete Kia to be styled by design chief and former Audi man Peter Schreyer.

Head of product planning David Labrosse told us that while his firm is targeting VW’s quality benchmark, “we don’t want all of our cars to look the same”.

He added:
“When we launched the Cee’d in 2006, it showed that Kia can build a car that can compete in Europe. With the Sportage, we are introducing style and premium quality to an affordable model...

This isn't news!! It's common knowledge Kia is better than VW.

Of course, hate on the top dog.

Does it look like Toyota's are quality these days? lol

I've known a lot a people who own VWs, and even had 2 myself, and as much as they (and I) like the handling and all, overall quality and reliability is not a VW strong suit.

It's okay to target VW for "perceived quality", stuff like fit and finish, sound of door closing, design. Certainly not for dependability. All my friends that have had VWs have not been pleased.

When did VW become the "King Of Quality"?

I think this two minute IIHS video explains why KIA is looking to VW. http://www.iihs.org/video.aspx/releases/pr032409.
Saying "it is common knowledge Kia is better than VW" is lunacy. Look at the safety features, the steering system, the suspension the laser welding, the manufacturing process. Here you have KIA and there you have VW, a company that derives its manufacturing processes and draws on expertise from the other brands it owns: Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti. "Truth is so obscure in these times and falsehood so established that unless one loves the truth, he cannot know it." Blaise Pascal.

The Touareg came out in 2004 and it was full of new technology. It shares the same platform with the Porsche Cayenne which is #1 brand on JD Powers. It is well known that first year models aren't perfect. In 2008 VW made 2,200 changes to the Touareg2. Can we look at recent vehicles as opposed to first year models. About the wiper, VWs often come into the US with flimsy shipping wipers which are replaced with the best of the best Bosch Icons once they reach the US so that the real wipers aren't damaged. Who knows whether the shipping wipers weren't left on or if a porter put it on the wrong way or did not slide it completely in. Too many unknown variables in that wiper story in my opinion. It makes for a fun story but I wouldn't base a decision on this.

With the VW group owning Audi why cant they get the same quality they squeeze out of Audi into VW cars?

And who says Audi's are any better in reliability??... Maybe by perceived interior quality.....but not reliability!!...

Quality and reliability in this context are very different things. VW's have high quality materials and design but not as reliable (fail more often). It's a choice in this price range do you want something low quality that never fails or higher quality that may need more maintenance. If you want both then that cost more.

Agreed. Kia cars until recently weren't known for refined interiors though we may see that change with newer cars coming up soon.

VW cars have never been known for their reliability. They generally have great looking interiors, solid closing doors and sporty Teutonic ambitions. I don't know anyone who praised their VW for reliablity, they enjoy the ride when it works right and pay up when handling the sneaky dealers. The owners just don't mind. If they did they didn't stick with VW. Don't expect that window to close when it's about to rain or to get that 50K tourtank out of reverse. The tdiv10 engine is badass.
