BMW's 4.4L TT V8 Squares Up VS. MB's 5.5L TT V8, Who Do YOU Think Will Win This Battle?

BMW's 4.4L TT V8 Squares Up VS. MB's 5.5L TT V8, Who Do YOU Think Will Win This Battle?
Although we know that the upcoming M5 will be powered by a 4.4L twin-turbo V8, derived from the X5/6M, we do not have any idea of its official specs.

While some have forecasted upwards of nearly 600-horsepower, we cannot be entirely sure. If you do not recall, reports were estimating the E9x M3 would feature a 450-horsepower PLUS motor. Yeah, didn't happen.

So, when Mercedes-Benz unwrapped its new 5.5L, forced-induction V8 producing 537-horsepower and over 660 lb-ft of torque, you know the gurus at M GmbH have to have something up their sleeve to battle this.

Ultimately, we want to know:

Even if BMW can't match the lb-ft rating of MB's new motor, which would you prefer and why?

Remember the words of performance guru Mr. Carroll Shelby: horsepower sells cars, torque wins races. Mercedes Benz surely remembers and they have taken the queue to come out on top with the launch of their revolutionary 5.5L V8 twin turbo engine.

Slated to make appearances in the CL, CLS, S, and E class, this new development has got BMW shaking in their boots as this engine will make its way to the 2011 E class AMG, arch rival to the much fabled BMW M5. With the number of horses increasing from 525 to 537, the real gain is the massive surge of torque which has gone from 630 Nm found on the previous 6.3 V8 to a whopping 900 Nm. These numbers will be able to make mince meat out of the 2011 BMW M5 which is powered by a 4.4L V8 engine, churning 555 BHP and 680 Nm of torque...

The 4.4 V8 for the new M5 is rumored to have between 580-600hp and around 530lb-ft. Im sure the M5 will be more suited for track use.

But I would also love to drive next E63 with the Mercedes V8. With 660lb-ft the acceleration must be unrelenting!!

Both the M5 and E63 with these engines will be the fastest/most insane performance sedans to date.

Rumored to ??

Use your brains for a second and you will see it is a STUPID RUMOR.

Common sense should tell you that the jump from 507hp to 550hp makes a lot more sense than a leap to 580-600hp.

Audi only put the RS6 at 572 to be competitive because of the Horrendous Weight and All Wheel Drive system in the RS6.

Please Think before typing.

"While Dr. Segler has not confirmed the power output, everyone’s expectations lie within the 585-600 horsepower range."

http://www.worldcarfans.com/110043025941/2011-bmw-f10-m5-hits-the-ring-video

"As we have previously reported, the M5 will feature a 4.4 liter-twin-turbo V8 from the X5 M / X6 M. It will be tuned to produce 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS), instead of 547 hp (408 kW / 555 PS). Mated to an 'M Sports' transmission, the M5 will likely accelerate from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h)."

I guarantee it will have more power then the x5m. Bookmark this thread.

This is what i mean about Retards.

The MUCH HEAVIER X5M and X6M are using the SAME ENGINE and it is tuned to 555hp and it keeps up with the Best of the Super SUVS and Most Super Sedans.

So again, WHY WOULD BMW tune the same Engine to 580+hp to propel a LIGHTER, MORE AERODYNAMICALLY EFFICIENT, RWD VEHICLE.

The fact that there are a lot of clueless morons who speculate 580+hp does not permit you to cease thinking.

I also Predicted the RS5 would have no more than 450hp as the previous RS4 had 420hp and it would be Naturally aspirated as the leaked interior pics had an 8,500rpm redline. Even though i clearly stated the reasons why i got to those conclusions, I was de-boosted by the Morons on this site.

Tell you what.

Lets bet $1,000 USD on the official Hp figures of the next M5/M6.

My Logical Conclusions vs your Rumors.

Well we will just have to wait and see...

But here is a sneak peak. The X5m has a huge flat torque curve that was designed for 5000lb SUV. That torque is fed to huge 305 tires and an AWD system on the X5m. Since 305s wont fit on the new M5(and no AWD), there is no way the M5 could put the power to the ground with a torque curve that flat.

What they can(and will) do is completely overhaul the engine mapping on the V8, and possibly the size of the turbos. The results will be a higher red-line, and a more curved(or peaked) torque curve. The end result will generate HP in the high 500's, torque in the high 400's, and an engine worthy of track use, and BMW's crown jewel the M5.

You only want to be a 1000? :)

E39 M5 = 400hp
E60 M5 = 507hp
that's an increase of ~27%

common sense is fine, but the past tells a different story

They both are very exciting engines the power figures on the AMGs is outrageous and the amg V8s already sound amazing cant wait to drive/hear one. 4.4 V8 with that much power is huge, I think both engines just upped the anty on performance engines exciting times ahead in luxury performance class!!

I thing that as always, the MB will be torquier than the BMW..but when you hear the BMW turbos reving up you'll fall in love with that engine. I din't hear the MB engine yet...so let see what comes from Benz.

It's about how you utilitze those power/torque efficiently @ wheels. I'm guessing BMW will do better than MB. I'm more interested in comparing these 2 to GT-R's 3.8TT V6 and MP4-12C's 3.8TT V8. With the latter revving to 8500 rpm of course there's really no comparison though.

Blog post used for a source has a heavy MB bias. MB engines need to have a lot of torque because their cars are so heavy, outside of DTM & F1 of course.

"how do you know 305s won't fit on the new M5, are you doing the testing?"

I wish i was testing the M5! I don't know if they will fit...just speculating : /

Actually the x5m has 315s in the rear wider then the tires on a Ferrari 599.

The X5M makes 500lb-ft from 1500rpm to almost 6000rpm(almost the entire rev range). They will definitely change the torque curve or else the tires will never hook up on a track.

Even the MBs 5.5 V8 only makes its peak torque from 2500 to about 4000rpm only a 1500 rpm range. It will still be able to break the tires loose when the driver pleases, but since it has a more curved torque band its drivable in a RWD configuration.

I like both engines. Both obviously sound great!. I wish my LS sounds like either of them, otherwise I wouldn't be selling it for an RS5! yes.
