Is Toyota Getting SERIOUS About Fun Again? Re-Trademarks Supra Name

Is Toyota Getting SERIOUS About Fun Again? Re-Trademarks Supra Name
The Toyota  FT-86 is still on track, according to the latest reports, but will it wear a Supra badge? That's the speculation making the rounds on the Web today as word of Toyota's re-trademarking of the legendary Supra badge breaks loose.

The FT-86 isn't the only possibility, but it may be the best. Subaru is already thought to be working on a hot STI version of the joint-project coupe, and it would make sense if Toyota is going to revive the Supra nameplate to stick it on that model. That would leave the new FT-86 to wear a revived Celica badge, rebuilding the relationship the Celica and Supra had in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

or all of the above? I picture a $29,000 150hp car with Corolla looks

The $29,000 is price in Japan. Everything in US was sold cheaper. For example, G35(Skyline) sells @ 4M yen($46,000) in Japan, starting @ $29K in US.

Maybe that's where the quality gets sacrificed. If that's the price difference then obviously there were some short cuts made. Toyota drifted itself into a wall in terms of quality.

And bring back the Supra!, the most exciting Toyota ever made, next to the overpriced [L]ittle [F]lower [A]cademy.

They always water them down...The G37 Concept was the best looking car in its class period...Then the production came out and didn't have the same bumper, lights, black glass roof, rims..etc...still nice looking but not like the concept...same goes for Jaguar XF concept

Highly doubt it will be called the Supra considering its starting price is way too low.

The supra used to start at about $40,000 and considering that this was supposed to be a sub 20k car and it has already jumped to a base price of nearly 30k, I wouldn't be surprised if the final version came out somewhere in the neighbourhood of 35k.

Celica would be a good name. Supra should be something competing against GT-R. Maybe a cheaper and simpler LFA badged as Toyota Supra.

I would not get to excited about Toyota registering the name. While it's possible that some version of the FT-86 may get the Supra name, it's probably more likely that Toyota simply re-trademarked or copyrighted the name to keep another car company from using it.

My guess is that Toyota will wait to see the sales numbers for the FT-86. If it sells well, you'll probably see the rumored turbo version of the engine being placed in a FT-86 with upgraded performance components and the Supra badge.

I predict Supra will be based on FT86 platform, featuring TT engine, and may come in AWD.

And if it keeps weight under 3200 lb, and steers w/ hydraulic assistance, 370Z will be in trouble. Well, everyone.

That'd be interesting if they just make the Supra a derivative of this, and badge this a Celica, kinda what they did in the late 80s...
