Is Bob Lutz correct when he says GM has the right products to compete during the gas crisis?

001 was interviewed on 'Your World with Neil Cavuto', the number one business show on television during the New York auto show about the high gas prices.

001's big concern, is that the American car companies just aren't prepared for an extended gas crisis and don't have a rich enough model offering of fuel efficient cars and trucks.

Plus, the cars and trucks they do offer are extemely weak compared to the Asian manufacturers.

After 001's interview Bob Lutz commented that GM was prepared for the gas crisis and had plenty of models that could compete, like the Chevy Cobalt!

Is he kidding?

Who on earth thinks the Cobalt is a legitimate competitor to products like the new Honda Civic?

Does he have a point or is he just having a senior moment?

We'd love to hear your comments...

Shame on GM! Do they truly, actually consider the Cobolt a competitor? People its NOTHING but the old stincking Cavalier!!! Same quality, same crap!!

GM has absolutly NO competitors in ANY class.
Bob Lutz, you should truly be a true American and just leave the company and let a bright young person to lead GM, its a shame that America loses so badly and yet shamlessly Mr. Lutz still insists that he has competitors.

GM has lost the way. They keep following their same old crappy product planning, thinking big tank-like SUVs are the way ahead....the "American Revolution" They could be farther from the truth. The have NO niche models really (save the HHR) and their main line up, well just sucks for lack of better words. Now oil is on the rise AGAIN, and the Cobalt is not a good car. I have driven one and it feels so low rent and Mid-90's inside that I would never put my own hard earned money down on a vehicle like that. Ford is even worse. The Focus was a player, offering great handling and good performance for its class, but now is going on 7 yrs old, where is that great Euro version that came out a year ago??? Ford claims it would tread on the Volvo S40 and Mazda 3 (which the new Focus shares its platform) Since when has Ford been worried about this???? Lame excuse. No GM and Ford have lost their way, and I am not sure they will find the light at the end of their bureaucratically ran companies....

So no one heard of the Corvette???? (Got an average of 27.3mpg Highway without DOD!!!) In a recent Autoweek test. GM has the technology, they just have to use the damn stuff!

Also Honda got the VTEC from GM, BMW has been using GM derived technology for years, and GM is currently working with Toyota on next generation fuel saving autos.

GM needs a campaign to change its image. I cringe at their commercials because they never mention "active fuel managment" in their SUV ads. Why???? Big friggin selling point! A sketzo, down syndromed, ADD, chipanze can do a better job advertising for GM.
