Blast From The Past - Can This Be The Ultimate Muscle Car Recreation?

It’s one of the most iconic shapes of all time, with its spoiler higher than its roofline. So, when Pixar needed a character to represent venerable old Detroit Steel in their animation ‘Cars’, the natural choice was the Plymouth Superbird.

And now you can have a modern one. All you need is a Dodge Challenger, and an extra US$16 395.

Heide Performance Products is the shop behind the conversion. They take a new Challenger and replace the front end with the classic cone-like nose of the Plymouth Superbird (or Dodge Charger Daytona – they have kits for both versions). The signature tall wing is added, along with a bonnet with a “power blister”, various ventilation scoops and custom side skirts. Then they fit a set of custom 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. A rear splitter, custom badging and taillights that mimic the ’70?s original, complete the exterior look.

It's pretty cool looking, especially having grown up in the time period of the original and having admired it. But damn, you'd have to be quite an extrovert to actually buy one and tool around in it. And then there'd be the constant explaining to others of what it was. Couldn't do it, man.

I saw this about a week ago. It will be interesting to see if there is a demand. The origonal Dodge Daytona from a Charger to a Charger 500 in 69 was produced for Nascar and the first to be developed in a wind tunnel. Nascar said in order to race the car, a minimum of 500 had to be available to the public. Richard Petty at the time wanted to use it but he was with Plymouth. Because of Petty's huge success in Nascar, Chrysler switched the wing car program to Plymouth in 1970 using the RoadRunner which became the Superbird. The nosecones and rear wings were different from the two brands. These cars set many records at the time and due to the Hemi engine [that was factored to slow it down] and the aerodynamics of the car, no other brand could compete. Due to this and the lack of tire technology the car were banned along with the Hemi. When Dodge re-entered nascar, they wanted to use there new gen3 hemi and nascar said no because "It is an unfair advantage".

I don't like it - let's not tarnish the legacy of the original "wing cars"

Looks waaaay out of proportion to me. Probably a good way to ruin the value of a perfectly good Challenger though.
