In China's large cities, driving is absolutely pain in the a$$. Case in study here, in Shanghai every middle-class couples who bought a piece of property are having their next mind set on a motor vehicle. Car is affordable, what they don't realize is the parking space and government quota on the vehicle license issuance per month. So they ended up bidding for the license which eventually cost close to 1/3 of the price paid for the vehicle, not to mention paying top dollar for a measly parking space in addition. In reality, during 9-5 Monday thru Friday, driving is not fun and total chaos. There are SO SO many cars in a densely populated city that some folks eventually quit driving during the weekdays to and from the work, instead it becomes a vehicle only for transporting kids. People are not thinking right, it is prevalent thing in China, car is more of a status symbol thing and it is regarded as one of the most crucial part of being now in China. My advice for folks planning to dwell in China metro area, better think twice before purchasing a car. Hail a taxi or ride on public transportation system is a much practical way instead, believe it or not.
