Video: BBC's Top Gear shows Mercedes S-Class mishap

I was wondering who would be the first bonehead to post a comment.

It shows how much you guys know about the automotive world. This video is almost a year old. The only mistake Mercedes engineers made was to test this indoors. They understimated the effect of the metal walls. This technology works perfectly in the real world.

There was never a recall on this option and you can order it in the US. Do you think they would release something that didn’t work especially to Americans that sue everybody and their mother?

On top of that, I watched a video of Clarkson’s sidekick (the guy sitting on the left) testing this option in the real world and it worked flawlessly. He was full of praise. I wonder if this was recorded before or after. If it was after this guy is quite the hypocrite.

But you know what they say its lonely being on top. It’s part of life. When you are number one you will have a lot of enemies.

Lets see how long it takes Toyota to reverse engineer this great technology.

BTW, did you guys bother to notice how small of an impact the car made in comparison to the speed. Remember this guy did not touch the brakes.

It would have done even better if the test were done outdoors without the metal walls.

I read that too. They guy did get fired and I saw the piece of wood in another video. However, I still believe the system was trying to avoid the crash. I don't think you can disable the system.

The problem is that it doesn't work as good inside of a metal building.

I have no doubt that this technology works.

Don't you find it fishy that these engineers tested this thousands of times and then it fails one time with a reporter behind the wheel.

As far as I know there is nothing in the real world that has a solid piece of metal on each side
of the car.

If you guys have your doubts about this technology why is Mercedes releasing it to the US? Don't you think it would be wiser to admit a mistake than face a potential for bunch of lawsuits. Can you imagine people getting killed inside of a tunnel caused by an S class. With this video it would be a homerun for the people suing.

Isn't this over a year old. THey ddin't show it all either. I have seen this before...quite a while ago I might add. Hell I think it was on Autospies the first time.

You don't sound to me like a person that test drives other makes. If you did you would be more informed about other brands.

Sounds to me like you have your head stuck in JD powers and maybe a little R&T on the side.

4x4 Camry (RX), Pokemon (last ES), Inverted bathtub (SC), Copycat (last LS) etc.

Too many to list and all of them are 100% reliable. Actually I listed them a few days ago.

No offense, but the old IS looks like a riced out Civic. I'm not bashing because the current IS is a huge improvement over the first one.

IMO you should trade the old one for the new one and keep the 4 Runner.

"Since the price difference between a comparable Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW isn't very much, I doubt people are buying the BMW and Lexus because they can't afford a Mercedes. Especially if the majority of people purchasing these cars are in the "high income bracket."

If I couldn't afford my Benz I would buy a BMW or Audi but not a Lexus. Sorry but Lexus just doesn't live up to its German counterparts in terms of class,drive and detail interior quality. The lexus interior looks like the Asian toyotas no difference. Sales really mean nothing those who can afford a benz can buy a lexus those who can afford a lexus may not be able to do the same. Benz has more models in the $60K and above range than Lexus, how many people can afford those?
