Clunker was mostly during August and maybe just one week during July. Toyota did have the most clunker sales, but GM wasn't that far back. So next month will show strongly Toyota is doing vs. the competition.

Toyota did indeed clean up on cash for clunkers, so it would be tough to keep up against last year. Honda suffered similarly.

I'm suprised. My neighbor sells Toyotas and has been telling me that sales are very good. In fact so good he got a promotion.

What a biased, misleading title...
The exaggeration is just ridiculous. Sales haven't been stellar, but the title seems to imply that Toyota and Lexus are completely out of business.

Lexus has no reason to be down other than a tarnished image. Toyota is still suffering an image problem and was against stellar sales last year.

There are indeed battered and bruised.

ANyone who reads this site knows I have no love for 009 (abd especially his headlines), ut this seems fairly reasonable. They are battered and bruised, though as we have learned, much of the bruising has at the hands of LaHood and his cronies, supported by a voracious media. And, he also correctly suggests that some of this drop is due to a pretty spectacular (pre-media circus; C4C high) last year.

I disagree about Lexus though. Their issue can't be relegated to just image, but products. Only the RX (in its 2nd year?) remains stellar. The LS more than holds its own in its class, testament to just how good it was for its current generation. But the meat of the lineup should be IS ES and GS, and they are just a drag right now. I understand the GS is to be first up. Lexus will need a homerun to cmpete with the spectacular E and 5. Then gods help them with the next gen ES ind IS.

Numbers are one thing that can be manipulated by media, but TMS brand image has taken a beating badly, which will account for some drop in sales percentage. TMS fundamentals are still very strong from an institutional standpoint. They will be back.

It's not that surprising... they had a stop sale on the HS for most of the month. Figure another 1,000-1,200 cars right there...

really? but they only sold about 600 HS250's last month. I figure that's only a few hundred cars. Not enough to make much of a dent anyway.

Make YTD 2010 YTD 2009 Difference to Lexus Ranking

Audi 56,257 44,252 69,760 4
BMW 119,696 109,944 6,321 3
Lexus 126,017 108,577 0 1
Mercedes 121,041 101,316 4,976 2

My 2 cents: Tight ranking at the top between BMW, Mercedes and Lexus, with Audi not selling even half of one of them.

-> Enough said.

Toyota posted a 2.2 Billion dollar profit in the second quarter. Battered and bruised?
