Senior Saab Engineer Accidentally Confirms Mid Engine Corvette Existence!

The much-rumored mid-engined Corvette project has been unexpectedly confirmed by a senior Saab source.

The engineer revealed in a trade magazine that Saab’s engineers had developed a double-clutch transmission for a "mid-engined version of the Corvette" when Saab was General Motors' centre of competence for those systems.

The source also revealed that the wet-clutch transmission was designed to cope with up to 590lbft of torque, only marginally less than delivered by today’s Corvette ZR-1 V8.

they're all mid-engined technically, well at least the newer ones...

Correct all Corvettes since the C5 launch have been front mid engine vehicles. They also have the mid rear mounted transaxle and a torque tube between the engine and the transaxle.

Mostly likely the was simply referring to the mid mounted transmission rather than a mid rear engined Corvette.

That's true.
And it's not that the current format is flawed (I actually love the way it is right now), it would be really interesting to see a 458-like Corvette. After all, the 458's front reminds me of the Stingray-based Corvette concept.

I would like to see a modern interior thats not left over Gm parts and the fenders to more dramatic like to old versions. Then the Vette will have its sex appeal back

Frankly, the current Corvette formula works because it was correct from the get-go. No need to re-invent the wheel. If they push this issue, they will invariably shove the Corvette into Porsche price-ranges where fit, finish, luxury, and comfort are not debatable. They are a way of life. The Corvette formula holds true to bang-for-buck and good value. This is what real people need and what Corvette has been delivering for more than 50 years.

If we had a half of dozen more thinkers like Tango this would be a better site.
