New Toyota Camry recalled

The newest edition of the Toyota Camry is being recalled for a problem with the transmission. The problem, Toyota says, involved only a half-percent of Camrys built thus far for the 2007 model year. The new six-speed automatic transmission could lose second and sixth gear during operation. Toyota told Reuters the vehicle still will operate even if the gears are lost, and that the problem usually happens within the first 500 miles of use.

I hope the American car manufacturers would THINK of announcing a recall this fast, the car hasn't even been on the market for 3 months now and its ONLY 0.5% of the produced cars and yet all are recalled. This is why Toyota keeps gaining over others.

Well I would not call them bone heads, but it is true that ALL auto manufacturers have recalls. There are sooo many variables in the auto business that it is impossible to comprehend or make a bullet proof ride.

Not sure how many of you remember the Toyota's infamous seat belt recall about 10 years ago. Literally stated that the problem was due to American's eating too much in their cars and essentially clogging up the seat belt slot...lol...(Hint to "lazy' Fat American's in the statement). Obviously was BS and the buckles replaced. I kinda got turned off after that.

I recently bought a new 06 Scion TC (Consumer reports #1 reliablility last year) and well 100% Japanese is not all that. Steering is loose making left turns, passenger window does not open with drivers side switch, among others.

So defend all you want, but no one is perfect. Besides the Camry is no longer the runt of the line up litter. Got very pricey. Toyota is banking on the Camry's history of reliability to now sell them at a higher price. Toyota's most intelligent move was to not allow auto unions. Toyota made a name for making cheap reliable small cars; now seems to be going away from that and may bite them in the butt.

By the way...I wouldn't pay a penny for Consumer Reports. 80% of their customer base are Japanese car loyalist. I am waiting for them to change their name to Japanese Auto Consumer Reports!

Good point about the Camry. This is the reason I don't get why people buy a Lexus. It's no secret that Lexus owners are bargain hunters; otherwise they would be driving a real German car.
With this margin between ES, IS, and a Camry getting thinner you have to start to question things.

Camry has great quality/reliability (it had until this incident), same great customer service, and same drivability as any Lexus.

why don't you share with everyone some of the problems that you've seen in your BMW530i? :-)

I'm not defending Toyota at all, but I guess you missed my point. My friend, my point was to the American manufacturers to learn that its not a shame to admit mistakes and stop screwing people with their product. Try working e.g. for a GM dealer and see the big problems that their cars have and not considered a recall, but a normal break. And also work for Toyota and YES you'll see big problems there too but they're considered RECALLS. :-) Now, do you see my point BMW530i?

Lol...I just love all the diverse auto people here. Wish there were more female point of views. Anyways go to any forums on the net and everyone has issues with their cars. To classify all American cars are junk or German is better then Japanese is stuff of humor. True perception between them all is different and recalls from US made autos get more press, but all I know is that my 05 F250 Diesel has less defects then my 06 Scion TC. To each his own my friends.

I am also wondering when the ES will be discontinued. Camry looks way better now and Toyota has been stepping on its own toes. Better watch out they may make GM mistakes...wait they already have...wait...GM and Toyota have been working together for over 20 years...hmmmm...

Hows this for your reliability Toyota? If tha new Camry was recalled just after 500 miles, can you imagine tha recalls in tha near future. Who knows what could be next, and another thing is if Toyota recalled Camrys so fast it doesnt make them any better than GM recalls, a recall is a recall no matter how fast you figure it out. Toyota screwed up, so deal wit tha defeat, and dont try to justify this recall either, it only works if youre toyota loyalist.

So deal wit it Toyota people.

Stop spreading lies. Show me a recall from MB for the 7 speed trans.

Every new product will have bugs. What I heard was that some customers complained about a slightly rough 1-2 or 2-3 shift, I can't recall.

In 90% of the cases it was part of the break in period and in some the problem was resolved with new software. Worst case I ever heard was replacement of valve body.

100 miles and braking down...LOL...how do you come up with this stuff?

that just bought a new Camry and yes their transmission acted up. Good on Toyota's part to act quick about it and not to let to many out of the gates before it got real embarassing!! SLowly however Toyota keeps getting chepaer and chepaer in development. I know it is to hold down costs, but at what price? Their reputation? They used to use double seals on all their car doors, now only one seal. I had a Celica from 1990 and its interior is still the same as the day it was new (brother-in law owns it now) and not a crack in the dash to be found. Will the same be able to be said about their current cars? Honda and Toyota have slipped some in their quality here as of late. My brother had a Civic and it had electrical problems of all kinds, yet in Consumers Digest it says that Honda has great electricals.... Hmmm.... SLow down Toyota/... Slow down.

Why all the buzz, why all the shocks guys.
Come straight to the facts.
Year 2005-2006 toyota have produced and will produce so many new models, which have never done before by an automaker company in this short period of time.
I heared from a source saying toyota will add atleast 20-24 totally new models to their line-ups (including Lexus)in these 2 years.2005-2006

some are as follows:Innova,Fortuner,Hilux "new stretchable platforms" yaris hatch & sedan,aygo,rectis,camry,avalon,Hiace 14 seater van,fj cruiser,rav 4,land cruiser,thundra...etc

Lexus:IS,ES,GS,LS,GX,LX,SC...etc

ANd now it's pretty obvious that if a manufacture is producing soo many ALL NEW CARS in a short period of 2 years, maybe some will have 1 or 2 problems.
U have to appreciate them, admire them for what they did. What if out of 20 one car have some technical issues.ANd they also didn't hide their mistake, but accepted it,that's the biggest thing which many don't do.

And i think this car will not effect many as it hasn't reached many world car markets other than US.So it will be fine.No car can destroy there 100 years of image at one shot, better understand that.RELIABILITY.

ANd nowadays RECALSS are so usuall, that everday we hear some recalls. For now go and checkout the new blogs of Spies saying
"CADILLAC SRX AND SAAB RECALLED"

Verdict of the topic:U don't need to take this recall so seriously, toyota will fix it 100% and also no need to doubt at Toyota's reliability.
They r still 10 out 10.

OK JUGNU whatever you say. I dare you to find a serious MB recall in the last 20, 30, 40,... years.

FYI, having anal customers complain about every single problem no matter how small, has nothing to do with recalls.

When did MB ever recall an entire engine or transmission?

Plus, I was merely pointing out how conveniently you found an excuse for Toyota with the introduction of multiple models.

You do realize that MB went from having 4 models in the 80s to "too many to count" today.

I'm not sure what they are doing with all of that cash, but I can assure you that they are not inventing anything.

Name one significant invention that Toyota invented?

I think most money is spent on spies. Tearing down European cars to learn how to build one.

Just look at F1 they got caught spying on Ferrari.
They have by far the biggest budget, but they decide to cheat and still lose. How embarrassing is that?

It's the same way with production cars they spy from the best like MB, PORSCHE, BMW, and AUDI.

That's where all the money goes.

MR. Toyoda is probably rolling in his grave knowing his beloved company cheats and lies for profit.

What innovation? PLZZZZZZZZZ

They may be sitting pretty with the bank, but aside from the company itself, what Toyota models would say are more 'supreme' than the competition?

A coupe of Toyota facts:

-Lexus's heritage contains Mercedes-Benz. That is because in the early developments stages for the first LS, Toyota engineers completely stripped down a Mercedes S-class, trying to work out how they could improve it.

-Jeremy Clarkson was in an interview once, and was asked "What is the worst job you have ever had?"

his reply?

"Road-testing the Toyota Corolla"

Only in extreme circumstances will a modern car leave you standed on a freeway.

Toyota is quite a basic car compared to Mercedes-Benz, so you can accept if something minor goes wrong on your new ML, like an electrical fault. All cars get them form time to time.

If you are that sour that you wouldn't possibly consider with great looks, handling, interior design etc. because of a little niggling thought in your mind that maybe something could go wrong, then you deserve your Toyota.

All cars get their niggling faults, and no car is immune.

Calling a car a "piece of s**t" because the clock stops working or something as comical as that is plain ignorant. End of story.

The only reason I am reading this post is because I am amazed at Toyota's soaring stock price. It means they must be doing something right. LS, GS, ES, IS, SC, LX, GX, RX

That is 21 or 19 (Maybach, Smart) VS 8 from Lexus

One or two more models (MLK, etc) they will have three times as many models as Lexus. Lets not even get into how many engines are offered for each MB model and the AMG models.

Who do you think has an easier job? With every model come different challenges.

When Lexus expands to 20 or more models give me a call and we will compare.

Lets start with JT and his F1 defense.

The only reason Toyota is not being charged is because all of the head offical resigned.

The two former Ferrari engineers did not just bring knowledge (bringing knowlege is legal), but a whole computer program which Toyota used to make a Ferrari clone.

"The espionage trial of two former Ferrari employees has now been scheduled to start on April 28, 2006. Both men are accused of stealing aerodynamic information from the Scuderia in 2002 and giving it to their new employer, Toyota."

"The three former Toyota employees charged with using stolen technology from Ferrari have been named.

All were high-level personnel from the Japanese outfit: team principal Ove Andersson, chief designer Gustav Brunner and Rene Hilhorst, head of aerodynamics.

The three men are accused of violating German competition law by using a data analysis programme brought over by a technician who moved from Ferrari to Toyota in early 2002, Cologne prosecutors revealed in a statement earlier today.

A Toyota spokeswoman confirmed the identity of the three individuals, but distanced the company from the specific charges being brought."

"Or we can just look at Lexus recalls, thats 52 compared to 172. More than triple the recalls of Lexus. Indeed you lose again."

Well for a company that makes three times the number of models I think it more than justifies the number of recalls.

When Lexus expands their line to 15-22 models we will compare. Look at how many recalls Toyota has at 271.

If you ask me it's much easier to concentrate and perfect 8 models than it is to perfect 21.

Since you guys keep insisting that Lexus is a completely separate entity lets keep this discussion between Lexus and MB.

Once again 8 vs 21. I won't even mention all the other stuff MB is involved with like trucks, buses, aerospace, boats, etc.

It would have been better to keep quiet than to bring up those two pathetic points and call it innovation.

JIT and customer service? Are you kidding me?

"At Toyota Motor Company, Taichii Ohno and Shigeo Shingo, began to incorporate FORD production and other techniques into an approach called Toyota Production System or Just In Time. They recognized the central role of inventory.

Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing is a way of managing manufacturing systems that could reduce waste, and lower cost, thus increasing profit. In its most basic explanation and principle JIT is every component in the manufacturing system arriving just in time for it to be used. Although just-in-time manufacturing sounds like a very simple application, implementing it can be a very costly and difficult task."

Can you find something other than improvement? We are talking about inventions. Is there anything that Toyota invented that is being used in every car today?

It’s irrelevant how many models MB brings to the US. You guys keep insisting that Lexus is a completely separate entity, so we are talking about Lexus vs MB.

The fact of the matter is that Lexus only makes 8 models worldwide compared to 21+ from MB. I don’t even want to get into all the other stuff MB is involved with like buses, trucks, boats, aerospace, etc. Every model takes away funds and concentration no matter where it goes.

If we go by your logic we need to consider that the number of models is not a direct ratio to the number of recalls. For example the old E class had 1 recall, the CLK had 2, and the ML had 28.

How can you guarantee that every future Lexus model will only have a few recalls?
The more complicated these cars get the bigger the potential for recalls.

BTW, I count 16 or 15 without the Maybach for the US. Which is double the Lexus #.

C, Cce , CL, CLK, CLKcv, CLS, E, Ew, G, GL, M, S, SL, SLK, SLR, Maybach

MLK on the way. Does Lexus have anything in the pipeline?

Lets keep this auto related. I'm not expecting Toyota to find a cure for cancer. Where does your logic come from?

You want me to start naming MB inventions that every car is using today? I might be here the whole day.

Do some research before you post nonsense.

Ben, I like you. You should be a comedian. What does MB inventions have to do with Camry recalls? And yes, you are already here the whole day. That's my research and sorry for posting more nonsense.

Nothing to do with the Camry recall, but everything to do with Toyota technology vs MB technology. Most misinformed people here think that Japanese technology is second to none. Prove it.

This thread is getting retarded. JUGNU is dillusional with 21st is ALL Japanese auto. Come on and get real. Of course Toyota is a great company (with no Unions) as well as Honda. You did not mention Mazda??? Why, because they are owned by Ford? You did not mention Nissan? Why Because they are owned by Fiat. HELLO JUGNU, TOYOTA IS PRACTICALLY AN AMERICAN COMPANY!! Toyota has been working closely with GM for a long time. So I guess you are saying ALL Japanese cars are 21st century = Euro and American auto have to be too...right!?!

Don't get me wrong, thank God for Japanese cars because they helped raise the bar for all auto manuf. Lexus still has Euro envy and that will last a long time, hell Lexus is going to build factories in Europe, which means they WANT TO BE EUROPEAN! Only bad sie to Toyota is that they are like most Japanese companies; they do not innovate but try to improve what has already been invented.

I think you two might be the same person. Anyway,
I'm done discussing with you two since you guys can't even count to 20.

ONCE AGAIN,

C, C coupe, CL, CLK, CLK convertible, CLS, E, E wagon, G, GL, M, S, SL, SLK, SLR, Maybach, and MLK in the pipeline.

How many is that again? Did you guys finish school?

If I counted engines it would have been closer to 40-60.

JT,
I said bringing knowledge is not illegal, but bringing a computer program and presenting it to Toyota officials and using it to create a Ferrari clone ISSSSS.
Read the article again this time without your Toyota shades.

"The three former Toyota employees charged with using stolen technology from Ferrari have been named.

All were HIGH-LEVEL personnel from the Japanese outfit: team principal OVE ANDERSSON, chief designer GUSTAV BRUNNER and RENE HILHORST, head of aerodynamics."

These guys were forced to resigned to distance themselves from TOYOTA.

When you guys learn how to count to twenty then come back.

Thanks for helping us count. I forgot the R completely and the GL is available. My dealership just got 3.

The whole point that I was trying to make is that MB makes a lot more models (more than DOUBLE). With each new model you have less resources and each model has its specific problems.

The number of models is not directly proportional to the number of recalls. Each model is different. The CLK had 1 recall and the ML 28.

The only way to compare fairly MB recalls to Lexus recalls is if they had the same number of models.

If you disegree then tell me how many models does Toyota offer. How many recalls did they have?

Who will guarantee that Lexus will not push the envelope on some future model and end up with 20-50 recalls on that particular model.

If you want to look at the recall table ignorantly than Jaguar, Hummer, KIA, GEO, etc are much better cars than Lexus.

dbloseven,if u don't know about them,then don't speak about them
ASK THE CARMAN,not only this but anything, any question u feel like

Answer for your first point:

Mazda is not totally owned by Ford,Ford only only bought a stake in Mazda.

therefore Mazda is not a ford's major group like Licoln, mercury,Range rover,Aston Martin...etc which are completly owned by Ford.
So is it clear.Mazda till today is not sold as a ford's brand.Ford is only a shareholder in Mazda.

Agian u r wrong.
Fiat owns nothing of Nissan nor PSA Peugeot Citroen group.
It's the Renalut which is a shreholder in Nissan
and vice versa Nissan is a shareholder in Renault.
For your information:Renault's major groups are Dacia,Samsung and Mahindra

So get your facts straight.Renault is a major group like Fiat or PSA Peugeot Citroen group.

Answer for your Second point:

Apart from shares, there is also something in business which is called as Engineering Links or Some engineering allies between car companies like Engines,Manufacturing and Hybrid partnerships.

Till today toyota doesn't link to GM or Ford in any major way. They are totally separate and independent.
But only from the last 2 years, Toyota is having a Hybrid partnership with GM.
Thats all.

So don't call Toyota as a branch of GM.U foool
How can u say to a one whole independent company as a group of another if it has only shared some Engineering Links or is a shareholder in or making Joint Venture, as a group of another.

So is it clear now, dbloseven,If u want ask something else plz tell me.
I will help u out buddy.

Only in your world are a E sedan and E wagon the same cars.

Only in your world are a CLK coupe and CLK convertible the same car.

If they have a problem with the convertible top does that count toward the coupe as well.

If you think about it, a car is totally different and prone to different problems just with an engine change.

An IS250 and IS350 can have totally different recalls.

But to keep this simple we decided not to count engines. If we did Lexus would lose BIG TIME.

MB has up to 8 engines for some models. You don't believe me, the current C had 8 engines from 01-06.

C230(2.6L), C230K, C230(2.5L), C240, C320, C350, C32, C55. For Europe you can add a few more diesel engines.

STOP ARGUING THIS BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE EVERY TIME.

MBs OPERATION IS 10 TIMES MORE COMPLICATED THAN LEXUS'

I THINK WE JUST DISCOVERED LEXUS' SECRET.
KEEP THE MODEL # LOW AND ONLY OFFER UP TO 2 ENGINES. MOST MODELS ONLY HAVE ONE ENGINE.
5 out of 8 LEXUS models have ONE ENGINE.

WHAT COULD BE SIMPLER THAN THAT?

MAYBE JD POWER, RT, CD, SHOULD WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT THIS ISSUE, INSTEAD OF FEEDING US BS.

Imagine if Lexus expanded from 8 models to 20 and had to design at least another 3-6 engines for the whole lineup.
How many problems and recalls would they add to their tally? How many unsatisfied customers?

JT, You better come up with a good response for this one.

This subject is getting quite interesting. I never really thought about it much before.

A year ago 7 out of 8 Lexus cars only offered ONE engine in the US.

No wonder they can keep their little gremlins and recalls under control.

MB's new E class will offer 10 engines worldwide.

Basically you guys are trying to compare a company that offers more than double the # of models in the US and has/will offer dozens of different engines to a car company that offers 8 models and until recently most with only ONE ENGINE.

Any of you Toyota/Lexus fans care to chime in on this subject?

You're starting to sound like a 10 year old. No wonder I need to keep repeating myself.

Doesn't your IS300 use an engine that was designed by Toyota 17 years ago.

LEXUS' SECRET = no more than 8 models and preferably all with the same 17 year old Toyota engine.

Too bad you can't find a legitimate excuse for why Lexus only offers 8 models and only one engine per model (2005).

How can this company even be compared to the technologically advanced MB, that offers 20+ models worldwide and dozens of engines? On top of that they always push the envelope and pioneer revolutionary technology that eventually filters down to all other manufacturers.

Nobody ever counted a C230 and C240 as two models, but to say that a CLK coupe and CLK convertible are the same car is ridiculous.

How many convertibles does Lexus have?
How many wagons does Lexus have?
How many engines does Lexus have?
How many models (I don't care how you count them) does Lexus have?
How many diesels does Lexus have in the US?

Keep arguing, it just show your ignorance. EVEN A BLIND PERSON WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE HOW MUCH MORE MB OFFERS TO THE US.

I already proved a point as soon as you guys brought TOYOTA into the equation. I wonder what happened to the "LEXUS is a totally different manufacturer."

You guys are confusing everybody is Lexus Toyota is Toyota Lexus what the hell is going on with this brand? Some kind of identity crisis?

FACT: Every Toyota/Lexus/Scion blog turns into Automoblie Cyber Wars between the Germans vs. the Japanese

why? Toyota Motor Company, love 'em or hate 'em IS the HOTTEST automaker in the world.

FACT: My 1994 Toyota Camry LE (2.2L) is in it's last days, has 221K miles, original engine, never rebuilt, no knocks, no pings, no smoke. i have a crack in the down pipe (original part), need to replace my front pass axle (original part). i've replaced the radiator (twice, i think) the altenator a few times, water pump (once), and a leaking seal (most costly repair - changed timing belt at same time). the only other maintainence was regular tune ups, oil changes, tires, and many trips to the pump (mileage). the only other problems are purely cosmetic. (broken door handle, power windows, fan control knob, and a few other knit-picks here and there. i could easily fix these issues and have a car that will last at least another 100K.

how many other ppl can say that about there cars?

Forget Smart and Maybach. When you get back on the subject of MB having dozens more model variants and engines in the US (a lot more than Lexus) then we can continue this discussion.

Stop avoiding the subject. I'll give you two simple questions.

Do you deny the fact MB's (US) lineup makes Lexus' (US) lineup look PRIMITIVE?

Do you agree there is a direct relationship between having a very complex lineup and problems?

Ben55Ben55 - 4/30/2006 3:08:51 PM

You never mentioned your transmission. I doubt your trans lasted 221k miles. My 94 Camry blew the trans at 50k mi.

I sold an 88 300CE about a year ago that had over 300k mi.

Changed water pump once, radiator once, and alternator once. The rest are oil changes, plugs, plug wires, distributor, brake pads, rotors, etc normal wear stuff.

Never touched the trans or engine (only fluid changes). Engine never burned oil and I never touched any timing belts because MB doesn't use them. It's the good ole chain.

Even the interior was in showroom condition. Only the driver's seat showed any use with a few wrinkles. No cracks whatsoever.

How many people can say that about their 20 year old car?

It's like talking to a 10 year old. I give up.

You keep turning around the subject. Now you want to bring the hybrids into this and who sold more cars and blah blah blah. 2 days ago you said Toyota was ahead of everybody in the hybrid field at least 5-10 years now it's down to 2...next year they will be behind MB, BMW, GM at least 5 years....LOL

Where is their diesel technology?

Lexus and technology don't belong in the same sentence. Except if you add STEALING in there.

Lexus is a PRIMITIVE brand with 7 out of 8 models with one engine. Not to mention that the 300 Toyota engine used in the RX, ES, IS, SC, GS was designed 17 years ago. They never invented anything in their 70 year history.

What a GREAT brand? At least in your PRIMITIVE world.

Hey JUNGU..no need to call names. You wouldn't be calling me or anyone anything if you were face to face so I don't waste time with stupid internet name calling. I post at work and sometimes I slip up on knowledge.

Anyways my bad on Fiat and Nissan, it IS Renault that that has a Alliance with Nissan. Ford owns a 1/3 of Mazda and GM/Toyota have been working on things before and most likely after any Hybrid partnership. Did I state Toyota IS A BRANCH OF GM??? Don't think so. You are just biased and you missed my point that no auto company is exclusive and they tend to feed off eachother. Typically brands that do not directly compete (Ford/GM; MB/BMW (except for hydrib); Toyota/Honda; etc) will share engineering tech for the sheer fact that it is cheaper to work as a team then develope it on their own.

Some six speed trans's found on V6 2007 Camrys had an improperly installed C-clip. The C-clip has two differently "machined" sides. One side is beveled, the other side is 90 degree sharp. In the assembly of the tran's with the problem, the clip was installed in the wrong direction which caused unseating. When installed in the right direction it easily seats. If it unseats, the trans will then "skip" 2nd and 4th". My understanding is that the direction the c-clip faces has no significance other than ease of seating. Once the clip seats (no matter of direction) it stays seated and functions as intended. Thought you all might be interested.
