STUD or DUD: Is Top Gear USA Looking Like It Will Live Up To The Original?

STUD or DUD: Is Top Gear USA Looking Like It Will Live Up To The Original?
In what was an on/off kind of thing, Top Gear USA is coming in due time. If you do not recall, the show was initially picked up by NBC and it even shot a pilot; however, it did not exactly "kill it." So, NBC passed the chance to make an American version of the hot-as-fire UK edition.

Then the History Channel stepped in with what must have been defib paddles. Essentially, they brought on a couple of new faces and got cracking right away.

And what do you know, the very first trailer for the upcoming series has hit the 'net.

In true AutoSpies fashion, we have to ask "STUD or DUD?"

I'll wait until I watch a few episodes to make a decision but it just isn't what the British version has become. The British version makes me laugh while also wanting to win the lottery to buy a few cars. It's Clarkson, James, and Richard that make Top Gear the show it really is

I'll reserve judgement. But part of the success of the British show is the wit of the presenters, the contrast of their personalities, and the fact that the majority of the cars they test are cars we hardly see in the West. Seeing thunderbirds and Cadillac Coude De Villes get thrashed isn't exactly heart-warming. But we'll see...

I'm going to give them a chance. I hate it when Top Gear goes on a break... Then I have to watch Fifth Gear, which I already did. And Top Gear Australia is on a break too...

The thing is that there aren't any fun, car-related stuff on American TV these days.

Hmmm...

I'd watch it because there isn't anything else, but it doesn't compare to the original. You simply cannot duplicate the chemistry and brilliance of Clarkson, Hammond and May (and The Stig, of course).

What I would prefer is to get MORE Top Gear UK and for the US to get the current season at the same time. Perhaps more US challenges like Vegas, Bonneville Salt Flats, and the unforgettable redneck encounter in the South.

I have been waiting for this for a long time, but after watching the preview I cant get over how annoying the hosts are. Its a shame they didn't have Adam Carolla host like they had originally planned. I gotta wonder what the idiots in charge of this show are thinking.

I don't think it matters who hosts the show. The British version has advantages that just don't translate well to the West: They're able to incorporate more culture into their show because of their location. Outside of Japanese and Chinese(owned) makes, the few vehicles the UK produces are ones the whole world wants. And because of that, the majority of vehicles showcased are from other countries, and they can make any negative comment they'd like without impacting their own country.

The U.S. version will be relegated to nothing more than a "Jackass" stereotype. Americans prefer things like obnoxious reality and talk shows, played-out game shows, and bubblegum crime and hospital dramas. Intelligent programming just isn't a big deal on our list. Just look at ratings of current and past shows like "Arrested Development", "30 Rock" and "The Office."

meh

I'll try to watch a couple episodes...we'll see what the hosts are like together. The preview makes them all out to be buddies, not quite what it's like on the UK version.

I'm not saying this show won't have its moments...but that pilot is telling me that wasn't one of them.
