Does Buick Really Have The Clout to Take On The Lexus LS?
GMInsideNews reports that General Motors is considering a Premium Zeta-based Buick flagship for North America that will rival the Lexus LS.

Last June, GMI clarified rumors about the status of a Cadillac flagship sedan, revealing that Cadillac is considering a Premium Zeta-based sedan to be its flagship sedan. The latest GMI report states that the GM board of directors recently approved preliminary design work for the Buick flagship sedan. But unlike the Cadillac sedan, the Buick sedan doesn’t have the green light for production yet. So far, it has gotten the approval for management and product development with limited resources.

Buick has really bumped up it's quality and luxury in the last decade. I'm impressed with them more that I am with Cadillac. Caddy to me is more of a performance, sport/luxury company now days. I think they should lean more towards performance and let Buick take over the luxury. Hopefully Buick gets the green light on this.

As long as GM protects the Corvette, Cadillac will never achieve the performance levels necessary to be a true BMW competitor. But at the same time, it's a bit hard to swallow the notion that Buick would be considered more luxurious than Cadillac (in the US). The flagship Buick sedan would almost have to be Bentley-like to be considered a real competitor to the Lexus LS.

Will GM be ready to devote development funding towards those efforts? GM would almost have to provide enough funding to basically put the Sixteen concept in production to truly compete with the LS.

It has the price point and product. Let's see if the dopes can see past the marketing prowess of the Auto Evil Empire!

I dont see why it shouldnt get green lighted....but if its any indication of how the 2011/2012 Buick Regal GS came out I say go for it. But Lexus has been doing this for years now but I just want to add one more thing about buick. I think if Buick brings the Riviera as a sports coupe maybe with a vette engine in it or a twin turbo V6 i think that will completley put them back on the map and make them a true contender against whats out there now

Buick targeting Lexus implies that Caddy is going higher than Lexus. That's quite a stretch. If Cadillac could come up with a credible LS competitor that would be quite a win for GM. For this next product cycle, Buick should try to stay ahead of Genesis and Infiniti M.

I want the Cadillac SIXTEEN!!!
I want the 16 cylinders, the large displacement! I want that long hood!
The engine bay is so beautiful! I'm sure that a light engine should make cylinder deactivation very useful, especially with today's technologies! Oh, and RWD and no forced induction please!

Caddy is going after the German brands, both in performance and luxury. They don't really bother with the Japanese brands. To that end, YES, Buick is a viable competitor to Lexus. Infiniti and Acura are too performance based for Buick to be a competitor.

To those that hate, probably because I said that both Buick and Lexus are going after the same customer, I'm right! Both have customer demographics in the early to mid 50's and are trying to skew that number down by marketing to those in the early to mid thirties.

Besides the IS line, Buick is a better buy from a size/price formula. Personally, I would not buy either brand because the styling does not appeal to me.

That's a Chevrolet Caprice. It is not a luxury car just a cheap and unreliable V8 large sedan.

Unreliable? I wasn't aware that the Caprice has massive rust and sudden acceleration issues.

Can Buick take on the Lexus LS?.... No.... I think Buick has done a great job getting back into the market lately but not up to Lexus standards. They get close to the ES but that isn't saying much, the rest of the Lexus lineup is far ahead of Buick (right now). Buick is doing a great job but they seem to be competing more against something like the Toyota Avalon. Until a Buick has the same interior quality as a Lexus with the same attention to detail that LExus has Buick with always be around the level of a high end Toyota model or a Hyundai.

I hope they continue to aim higher than Lexus. That is an awfully low bar to jump over.

Buick can take on Lexus and beat them if they choose the right markets and price it right. If GM continues in adding quality, non-dated design and technology to the Buick brand, these things should sell well in middle-America. Both brands, Lexus & Buick are pretty much going after the same customer.

I went to check out the Buick LaCrosse and I thought the car was a piece of crap.

I saw paint peel and the interior was a mess of buttons. The arm rest on the doors is angled so my arm would fall off.

I think Buick should target their cars at Fords and stay right there.

@ JUGNU: The name "Caprice" as it's called in the Middle East is only a name. It bears no resemblance or relationship to the traditional Caprice as sold in the US. For your information, this car was sold in the US as the...wait for it...Pontiac G8. The extended wheelbase version is reputed to be returning to the US under the Caprice name as a police-only cruiser. That said, I have no information that says the original Caprice was unreliable. It was the staple tool of NYPD and LAPD for years. Where are you getting your info from?

I mean, every car company has the potential to be great. The real question is are they willing to do what it takes to make and exceed Lexus's standards. Now thats a hard call. My guess is no, but they do have the potential and the resource to shoot any car company out of the water.

Leave Lexus to Cadillac. Buick concentrate on Camry.
