Are The Control Freaks In Washington Harming The US Automakers More Than They Are Helping?

U.S. policy-makers are hampering the ability of U.S. auto industry to compete globally by focusing on electric vehicles while "ignoring" other advanced vehicle technologies, the CEO of a top parts supplier says.

BorgWarner CEO Tim Manganello told the Center for Automotive Research's Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, MI, on Thursday that "the U.S. government is going a bit too far in trying to dictate the powertrain technologies of the future."

What would he be saying if the gov't had let Chrysler & GM fail? "The gov't bailed out wall street but wouldn't help out the car companies, which happen to be where we get our business from. So not only did the gov't let the car companies down, but also their suppliers (me) fail too and left our economy go further into crap!!!"

1. Control freaks? Your partisanship is truly rearing its ugly head.
2. A blog entry about a blog entry. That's great journalism.
3. And finally, Borg Warner has their own interests at stake, not exactly the most credible source to begin with.

The title of the question is Ike asking if lowering taxes actually stimulate federal income, the answer to which has been answered simply by looking back at history. Allow the free market to work and you get innovation, dictate to the free market what the free markets are to make, you end up with cars like the Volt. Don't get me wrong, thre is nothing wrong the Volt, but rather it is a car with limited market appeal that will necer pay for itself it's huge premium over a comparable car of it's size, a fact that is true no matter the tax break.

Goodness! If only the world were so simple! Gubmnint bad, market good. All done.

Did you really not see what happens when businesses are free to operate with overly weak rules? They lie and cheat and steal until the world economy collapses.

The trick is to find a balance where innovation is rewarded by real market response AND powerful individuals and companies are not allowed to use their position to take advantage of others, i.e. intelligent laws and regulations.

I assume you like freeways, satellites, fire departments, education, parks, clean water, clean air, (and list goes on and on, without government oversight or funding thses things wouldn't exist.

"if lowering taxes actually stimulate federal income, the answer to which has been answered simply by looking back at history"

When?

I always hear this rhetoric and it is always from somebody than hasn't looked at the past. Clinton raised taxes, the economy boomed. The 50's had horrific tax rate for the rich and the economy boomed. Reagan cut tax and the economy barely moved, Bush (W) cut taxes and the middle class shrunk. If history is taught us anythin it tha tax cuts (for the rich) increase saving by the rich and little else.

This is ridiculous! Borg-Warner is making those statements because most electric vehicles use CVT transmissions or low-count multi-speed transmissions that don't cost as much as the units they are selling to GM, Chrysler and Ford.

As for electric cars, the government, surprisingly, is taking the long-term view and supporting the better technology(unless you're an auto-mechanic).

Agent009, you are indeed a disgrace- your partisanship is so glaring even a blind man can see it.
I would suspect that such political rubbish will not be appropriate in automotive forums but you don't seem to have any standard anyway.
You just ebbed to yet another low.
