Back Down The Same Road - Detroit Sales Boost Is Because Of Fleet Sales Not Consumer

Back Down The Same Road - Detroit Sales Boost Is Because Of Fleet Sales Not Consumer
Automotive News  [sub] takes a stab at calculating the numbers that Detroit doesn’t want you to see. Best of all, AN says the numbers are based on “internal documents.” During this morning’s financial results conference call, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne railed against AN’s “crusade,” implying that the industry paper of record is nursing a vendetta against Chrysler… which is usually a good sign that a media outlet is doing its job well. It’s also a sign that Marchionne knows his firm’s fleet dependence is a problem.

Why is AN going after fleet numbers? Because everyone knows Detroit is using them to help create the perception of a completed turnaround ahead of GM and CHrysler’s IPOs (to say nothing of midterm elections). Or, as AN diplomatically puts it:

The American companies cant win for losing with some people, I also see Hyundai with high numbers on that list yet not even one remark from this bias site about that just consistant bashing of the detroit makers.....

I think most people know Hyundai sales come mostly from fleets.

With the piss poor U.S. economy, and wether it's Obama's fault or not. This does not take away the fact that GM did this to themselves(past,present,futre)...and now with a $85 Billion bailout from us tax payers...for GM to say "watch my wheels go, round and round through fleet". Let's not get this twisted, I would like to see GM become successful, but if they continue with arrogant big ballsee' ads/commercials, and pigeon brain execs and the Red-X Quaility team(wtf is that? really?...let's call them New Kids on the GM block) with end result, is more fleet than consumers. Within 3 years, they can become China Motors or nothing all...Good luck GM.

The fact is that GM, Chrysler and Ford produce way too many vehicles for the N.American market. Their business models are centered unrealistic estimates of vehicle demand and resale value. Then the problem gets worse because the only way they think they can compete is by getting the unit price of the vehicle down by producing a way too many vehicles to try to undercut Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai. They've been doing this for years by selling the cars to themselves when they use to own Hertz, Budget and Avis.

As far as the US Automotive companies have come in past few years/months, they have a LONG way to go to be competitive in the United States!

They haven't learned. Sales figures do not equate to profits!
