First Look At the New Porsche 911 To Debut at Frankfurt Motor Show
Porsche will reveal a new incarnation of the iconic 911 at next year’s Frankfurt motor show. The company is hoping to win back traditional customers in the face of tough supercar competition and reaffirm its future under the guise of parent company Volkswagen.

Codenamed 991, the heavily re-engineered coupé and cabriolet are set to go on sale in the UK in October 2011. They will get freshened exterior styling, a higher-quality interior, more powerful yet highly fuel-efficient six-cylinder boxer engines, sharpened dynamics and a greater list of high-end options.

yup, looks like a Porsche. not criticizing them. after all, they've always looked the same. just don't know how to feel about it. it's the same, and keeping it too safe. let's wait for official shots, i guess.

Ferrari can reivent each new model with each new generation and still remain true to their heritage and having unmistakable Ferrari identity that isnt mistaken for anything else. Yet each new Porsche generation has to look like a warmed over version of the previous generation lazy.....

This has to be the most conservative group of designers that I ever seen. They take no liberty in going out there on the water. Just always stay on land, because its safe. I'm tired of it already.

Well, sometimes desiners are taking too much liberty and it results in an Infinity M....

While styling may be subjective, they are headed in the right direction. Better performance, better interior materials, better fuel economy, better emissions numbers and a weight reduction of 100 pounds(45kg). While Porsche may maintain the same outside look (some refer to this as lazy designers), the engineers are constantly updating/improving/refining the rest of the car keeping it at the top of its game.

"Porsche has traditionally made big changes to the 911 every second generation, so while today’s 997 is regarded as a heavily facelifted version of its predecessor, the new 991 — seen here in Autocar’s exclusive illustration — has been developed from a clean sheet of paper."

Ahh, the power of suggestion.

The fact that the 911 GT3 can competitively run against Ferrari's latest mid-engined model is a testament to the 911's continued relevance as a cutting edge sports car. Think about it - it retains enough of its heritage to be recognizable from its original incarnation and yet still be able to take on Ferrari's latest engineering marvels. Sounds pretty impressive to me. So despite Ferrari changing completely the look and feel of its model every 10 years, the 911 stays on course and remains competitive.

This makes me want to see what the GT3 version of the car will look like.
